Brooke Frederickson Office Manager...Sally Anderson The Tipoff The No. 15/14-ranked University of Utah women s basketball team (26-3, 15-0 Mountain West Conference) will honor its two seniors on Saturday before the regular-season finale against UNLV. Tipoff in the Huntsman Center is set for 3 p.m. The Utes bid adieu to seniors Leilani Mitchell and Jessica Perry. Those two have helped the team rattle off a school-record 21 straight wins, having eked past Colorado State on Wednesday, 63-58. The winning streak is tied for the longest in the nation as the Utes haven t lost since Dec. 3 when USC dealt the team a 62-45 setback. The win over Wyoming last Sunday guaranteed Utah sole possession of first place and the MWC regular-season title. It also assures Utah a No. 1 seed come MWC Tournament time on Wednesday. UNLV enters the game having dropped four straight. Last time out, the Rebels dropped a 68-65 home game to New Mexico last Tuesday. Tickets for all home events are available at the Rice-Eccles Stadium box office or by phone at 801-581-UTIX. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.utahutes.com. The game can be followed on KZNS 1280 The Zone, with Chris Tunis calling the action. Live audio and statistics are also available at www.utahutes.com. Scouting the Opponent UNLV enters the contest with a 8-20 record. It is currently tied for seventh in the Mountain West Conference with a 4-11 league tally. The Rebels have lost four straight games, and five of their last six. The last time UNLV was in the win column, it tallied a 73-68 overtime win over BYU in Las Vegas on Feb. 16. The Rebel offense features the league s top scorer. Sequoia Holmes averages a league-high 18.9 points per game, connecting on 40.2 percent of her attempts. Shamela Hampton is second on the team with 12.2 points. Holmes is the team s top rebounder, clearing 7.3 boards per game. Her rebounding average ranks third in the conference. Regina Miller is in her 10th season at the helm at UNLV. She is 175-123 as its head coach. A Brief Look at the Series Saturday marks the 36th time that these two programs will have locked horns on the women s hardwood. Utah has won nine straight, and it owns the all-time series lead, 24-11. UNLV has only won three times in the Huntsman Center as Utah owns the 11-3 series edge in Salt Lake City. Last time out, the Utes quieted the Rebels, 82-53, in Las Vegas on Feb. 6. UNLV s last W in Salt Lake City was also its last win in the series. It tallied 68-60 overtime win here in March of 2004. Utah is 106-25 all-time in the Mountain West Conference, making it the all-time winningest team in the league. Below is a brief look at the current series. Last Time Out Morgan Warburton scored five of her game-high 25 points in the final 36 seconds and No. 15/14 Utah escaped with a 63-58 victory over Colorado State on Wednesday night for the Utes 21st straight victory. Leilani Mitchell added 23 for Utah, which already had clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season title. The Utes have beaten Colorado State 10 straight times, last losing to the Rams on Feb. 13, 2003. With the score tied at 58, Warburton stole the ball and dribbled the length of the court, converted the layup and free throw to make it a 61-58 with 36 seconds left. Elle Queen missed a desperation 3-pointer for the Rams and Warburton sealed the win with a pair of free throws. Sara Hunter had 21 points, all on 3-pointers for Colorado State, which has lost 19 straight. The 26 losses are the most in school history and part of a third consecutive 20- loss season for the Rams. Colorado State outscored the Utes 16-8 to start the second half and closed the gap to 44-42 on Queen s layup with 11:59 to play, but Warburton gave the Utes some breathing room with a 3-pointer. Hunter got the Rams within 50-51 with her sixth 3-pointer of the game, but Mitchell had her own 3-pointer in a 7-0 run that put Utah up 58-50 with 6:07 left. The Utes went scoreless on their next seven possessions and Colorado State tied it at 58 with a 3-pointer by Hunter and a free throw by Juanise Cornell with 2:49 remaining. Warburton had 13 points by halftime to offset 12 points by Hunter for Colorado State as the Utes led 36-26 at the half. Record Rants, Raves and Ramblings Utah has won a school record 21 straight games. That is now tied for the longest winning streak in the country... Utah has 26 wins this year, tying for third all-time in Utah s record book. The 1976-77 and 2004-05 teams each won 26 games, while the 2005-06 team won 27 and the 2000-01 team tallied 28 victories... Utah has won 15 conference games. That ties the school record for league victories. The 1996-97 Western Athletic Conference team won 15 games, going 15-1 in loop action. The team s 16th league win would set the school and conference record... if Utah goes 16-0 it s only the third time it s gone unbeaten in league play (2000-01, 14-0; 1976-66, 13-0). Elliott has been regarded for years as one of the top women s collegiate coaches in the country, and with good reason. She has amassed a 509-207 record (.711) and has the longest tenure of any coach in the Mountain West Conference. Elliott solidified her name among the most elite coaches in the country when she earned her 500th win with a 73-57 victory over Colorado State on Jan. 12, 2007. She is just one of 25 Division I coaches in the country to have accumulated 500 wins, and ranks among the top 20 in the nation in career winning percentage. During her illustrious career, the winningest coach in Utah basketball history, has led the Utes to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, nine regular-season conference titles, three divisional crowns and six league tournament championships. In 24 years, she has had just one losing season (1993-94) and she has never posted a conference record below.500. Elliott has coached at least one first-team all-conference player in every season but one, and during her era, Utah has reached the championship game in all but seven MWC, WAC and HCAC tournaments ever held. A multiple-award winner over the years, Elliott was selected as the 2000-01 MWC Coach of the Year and IKON/WBCA District VII Coach of the Year. It was the fifth time she earned coach of the year honors in the district. In addition, she was the 2001 John and Nellie Wooden National Coach of the Year. Elliott earned WAC divisional Coach of the Year honors from 1997-99 (sharing the honor in 1998), along with the inaugural MWC Coach of the Year honor in 1999-00. She also earned that honor in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Elliott stepped into Utah s head coaching position in 1983, after serving as assistant the previous four years. In four years under Intermountain Region coaching legend Fern Gardner, Elliott helped guide Utah to four conference titles and four postseason appearances. Elliott s non-utah coaching experience includes coaching the East team to the gold medal in the 1990 U.S. Olympic Festival. In 1991, she served as assistant coach of the U.S. Junior National Team. A Lakewood, Wash., native, Elliott moved to Boise, Idaho, in the ninth grade. She went on to become a four-sport standout athlete (basketball, volleyball, field hockey and softball) at Boise State University and was the first woman inducted into the BSU Athletic Hall of Fame. After earning a bachelor s degree in physical education in 1977, Elliott became head coach at Boise High School. She led her prep squad to the state championship and was named Idaho A-1 Coach of the Year.

The Utes have held 24 of the 29 opponents to under 60 points this season, and 14 of those opponents have shot 35 percent or worse from the floor. The Utes scoring defense is 53.6 points (second in the MWC), and they hold their opponents to just.350 shooting (second in the MWC). Its three-point percentage defense (.295) is tops in the conference. Through March 3, the Utes rank seventh in field goal percentage defense, and eighth in scoring defense in the nation.
