The four seniors are Madison Akins, Tiffany Creamer, McKenna Foster, and Marissa Salazar. Head coach Kristina Hernandez is in her third season with the program (29-43 overall). Stetson had a challenging schedule to open the season with tournaments at UCF and USF. Stetson won two of three matches at the UNC Asheville Invitational, plus had a heartbreaking five-set loss vs. UNC Asheville after rallying from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits. Stetson fell 3-0 in its home opener vs. Marshall last Wednesday, and dropped all three matches at the USF Classic over the weekend. Home Cooking: Stetson has posted three straight winning seasons at home, including a 6-4 record last year. In the past three-plus seasons combined, the Hatters are 23-10 at the Edmunds Center, good for a.697 winning percentage. Senior Madison Akins leads the team and ranks third in the ASUN with a 3.04 kills-per-set average. She also ranks ninth in the ASUN in attack percentage (.271) and fourth in blocks-per-set (0.83). Akins has been named to two all-tournament teams. At UNC Asheville, she had a season-high 19 kills vs. UNCA with a.438 attack pct. She also posted 16 kills, six blocks, and a career-high.560 attack pct. in three set victory over Alabama A&M. Senior Marissa Salazar has also been named to two all-tournament teams (UNC Asheville, USF Classic). She averaged 3.6 digs per set this past weekend at the USF Classic, and picked up a career-high 22 digs in the match vs. LIU Brooklyn. Salazar also has 14 aces and in tied for seventh (with McKenna Foster) in the ASUN in that category. Sophomore setter Roxy Lake and freshmen setter Karmen Reivik split setting duties over the weekend. Lake recorded 42 assists and Reivik recorded 38. Lake also had 20 digs including nine against LIU- Brooklyn. Stetson ranks fourth in the ASUN in blocks-per-set (1.67). Among individuals, Shelby Connors ranks second (0.84), Madison Akins ranks fourth (0.83), and Olivia Duval ranks 11th (0.67). Shelby Connors had 10 blocks over the weekend, including a season-high seven against LIU-Brooklyn. McKenna Foster picked up 27 digs in three matches over the weekend. She has recorded double-digit dig totals in three of her last four matches overall. She also is tied for the team lead in aces (14) and has 75 aces in her career. Freshman Eva Deisa ranks second on the team with 89 kills on the season. She had 11 kills in her collegiate debut vs. Kent State, a 10-kill, 13-dig double-double vs. New Mexico, and a 12-kill, 11-dig doubledouble vs. UNC Asheville. She also picked up a career-high 17 digs vs. LIU-Brooklyn. Hernandez has utilized many line-ups this year. The athletic teams are called Hatters, reflecting the university s association with John B. Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all began in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affecting the citrus industry left DeLand in financial distress, Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. At DeLand s request, Stetson was made chairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889 and the university was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fielded the first football team in Florida in 1901. The name Hatter was used then and is still in use today. 2016 ROSTER No. Name Pos. Ht. Cl.
