Villanova never trailed. All proceeds from this game benefit Unidos Por Puerto Rico. Additional relief donations can be made at http://www.unidosporpuertorico. com/en/. Redshirt junior Eric Paschall added 15 points while freshman Omari Spellman added nine points and 12 rebounds. Sammy Mojica led the Dragons in scoring with 12. Villanova jumped out to an early 20-7 lead, Phil Booth hit the jumper and then a three to give Villanova the 13 point lead. The Wildcats kept the scoring surge going thanks to a dunk from Paschall and a three by Brunson to pull away by 19 late in the first. Paschall continued his hot streak in the first half having six points in the final four minutes. Villanova lead 45-22 at halftime. DiVincenzo started off the second half with three quick threes to keep Villanova s lead. Spellman and Collin Gillespie also netted threes to pull Villanova away by 26. Off the bench Jermaine Samuels and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree each had four point each, Gillespie had three, and Dylan Painter added two on a dunk. The bench had 17 in the second half alone. Cosby-Roundtree finished the game with a layup to make the final 87-68 Villanova. Brunson Bits In addition to being an Associated Press first team preseason All-American, junior guard Jalen Brunson is also the preseason choice for BIG EAST Player of the Year. Brunson s role has eveolved over his three seasons in the Blue and White. As a freshman the 6-3 guard started 39 of 40 games alongside then senior captain Ryan Arcidiacono. The only time he didn t start was owed to a stomach virus. Wildcats head coach Jay Wright has pointed to the willingness of a McDonald s All-American, which Brunson was in 2014-15 as a senior at Adlai Stevenson High School, as a key reason why the Wildcats were able to post a 35-5 record that included the NCAA national championship. NEWS AND NOTES As a sophomore a season ago, Brunson assumed primary point guard responsibilities and thrived, earning first team All-BIG EAST honors. He was also tabbed as a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award. Now, he is serving as a team captina alongside fellow juniors Phil Booth and Mikal Bridges. Last year Jalen stepped up a little bit more, noted Wildcats head coach Jay Wright. But this year, he s stepped up to become the player and leader that he is. He s just a natural born leader. He s a real good scorer and, even though he s a point guard, he can really shoot the ball well. I think you all will see the true Jalen Brunson this year. A Booth Review After giving Villanova one of the all-time boosts off the bench in program history to close his sophomore year - 20 points in the NCAA national championship game against North Carolina - Baltimore native Phil Booth was poised to assume more responsibility in 2016-17. Alas, left knee inflamation forced him to the sidelines prior to Villanova s clash with Wake Forest last November at the Gildan Charleston Classic. The hope that rest and treatment would alleviate the issue but Booth spent the remainder of the campaign watching from the sidelines. The 6-3 guard was ultimately granted a medical redshirt for the lost 2016-17season. Now, he once agian looms as a critical component of the Wildcats attack. He logged 28 minutes of action - the most of anyone in a Villanova uniform that night - and connected on 4-of-10 field goal attempts for 10 points to go with four assists. As you might expect, Wright is delighted to have Booth back in the lineup on game night. Phil is probably the most respected and wellliked player on this team, stated Wright during the preseason. I think what he did on the sideline last year really made the team appreciate him even more. Now that he s back it gives us more confidence going into the season. His friendship and off the court actions really give his teammates inspiration going into this year. D Tales Although its offensive fireworks tend to draw the headlines, Villanova s foundation is its defensive tenacity.

In 2016-17 the Wildcats have limited opponents to 65 or fewer points in a game 23 times (22-1). The only loss came in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Wisconsin (65-62). Donte Finished With a Flourish No Wildcat enjoyed a better finish to the 2016-17 season than redshirt sophomore guard Donte DiVincenzo. In five posteseason games including the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournaments, the native of Wilmington, Del., averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. As a freshman in 2015-16, DiVincenzo went to the sidelines with a broken bone in his right foot after appearing in eight games. Though he was cleared to return to practice in mid-january, he nonetheless remained out of the lineup on game night, ultimately being awarded a medical redshirt. Once he returned to full health, DiVincenzo often was tasked with assuming the identity of an explosive opponent in practice. His most notable role playing came in the run-up to the 2016 Final Four, when he assumed the role of national player of the year Buddy Hield. Donte, stated VU head coach Jay Wright, did a great job helping our guys get ready for that game. Villanova defeated OU 95-51 in Houston. After a delayed debut, the 6-5 guard made a huge difference in Villanova s season in 2016-17. That was never more clear than in an NCAA Tournament win over Mount St. Mary s when DiVincenzo came off the bench to log a career high 37 minutes to go with a career best 13 rebounds and - for good measure - 21 points. It was his first career double double and the most rebounds collected by any Wildcat this season. NEWS AND NOTES SERIES STUFF vs. Columbia Friday, Nov. 11, 2017/8:37 p.m. TV: FS2 Radio: 610 Sports Radio All-time: Villanova leads 4-2 Last Meeting: Columbia 75, Villanova 57 (Nov. 20, 2012) Last VU Victory: Villanova 72, Columbia 56 (Dec. 22, 2007) Jay Wright vs. Columbia: 2-1 Notes: In the last meeting between the two teams, in 2012-13, the Lions upended the Wildcats in convincing fashion at the Pavilion, 75-57, two days prior the Thanksgiving holiday... Two starters return from last season s squad for second year head coach Richie Riley. Spellman, the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, showed few signs of rust when he posted nine points and a dozen rebounds in 20 minutes of the exhibition game win over Drexel. My job off the bench is just to bring energy, stated DiVincenzo. The focus is defense and rebounding. DiVincenzo contiibuted 11 points, four rebounds and four assists to the exhibition victory over Drexel. Depth Charge While depth has been a consistent plus for Villanova in recent seasons, last season was an exception. With th einjury to Booth and Spellman sidelined, the Wildcats usually went no further than a seven man playing rotation. Spellman Steps Forward Another Wildcat who watched the 2016-17 season from the sidellines was forward Omari Spellman. The 6-8 product of Ohio was ruled to be an academic redshirt by the NCAA. That ruling allowed him to practice but not participate in games. The now redshirt freshman made the most of his time. In addition to the on-court knowledge he gained, he thrived in the class room, becoming one of 11 Wildcats named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team. It was a growing process, stated Spellman of 2016-17. I learned a lot and grew a lot. It was hard not being able to play in games but I definitely learned from it and I think I definitely turned it into a positive coming out of it. I learned a lot about how serious the game is. You can t take plays off and you can t be foolish on the court. Most importantly, I learned the importance of defense in relation to things like knowing the scouting report, that was a major takeaway for me. That is expected to change in 2017-18 thanks to a promising crop of newcomers alongisde Spellman, including Jermaine Samuels, Collin Gillespie and forward Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree. I have had people asking about the size of our team last year., noted Wright during the preseason. Last year we really only had seven guys. We couldn t play our usual fast tempo with aggressive play due to our limited depth. But our depth this year will give us the chance to press more the way we want to, play faster like we want to, and let s us be more aggressive on defense. We hope to be more aggressive overall this year too. 2017-18 Season The 2017-18 Villanova Basketball Season is presented by KeyBank. This is hte 98th season of Wildcats basketball dating to the program s birth in 1920-21.

NEWS AND NOTES Finneran Pavilion on the Horizon On Feb. 14, Villanova University s Board of Trustees formally approved a comprehensive renovation plan for the 31-year-old Pavilion on Villanova s campus. The significant $60 million renovation, which will be funded entirely by donor support, will transform the existing Pavilion creating a high-quality, gameday experience for Villanova students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans. The renovation of the Pavilion began in June 2017. Upon its projected reopening in the fall of 2018, the arena will officially be named the Finneran Pavilion. Villanova recorded its 180th consecutive regular season sellout at the Pavilion against Crerighton on Feb. 25. The Wildcats closed out the original version of the Pavilion by going 10-1 in the facility in 2016-17. The Cats posted a lifetime record of 293-62 (.825) at the building on Ithan Avenue. In 2017-18, the Wildcats willhost 12 games at the Wells Fargo Center and one on campus at Jake Nevin Field House (Nov. 29 vs. Penn).
