Singapore 4th Grade Math Worksheet: 13 Challenging Problems Name: Date: Question 1 I had a shock when I entered my school bus last Monday. There were 214 gorillas and chimps in the bus. There were 36 fewer gorillas than chimps. There were 31 more female chimps than male chimps. How many female chimps were in the bus? Question 2 I had a worse shock when I entered my classroom that day. There were 222 werewolves and vampires sitting quietly in class. There were 24 more werewolves than vampires. I noticed that some of the werewolves were hairy and the rest were bald. There were 19 more bald werewolves than hairy werewolves. How many werewolves were bald?

Question 3 Our teacher took us on a trip to a farm. We saw altogether 312 chickens and ducks in the farm. There were 76 more chickens than ducks there. Some of the chickens had caught bird flu. There were 86 more chickens with bird flu than those that were healthy. We killed the sick chickens and made chicken soup with them. How many chickens were still alive after that? Question 4 When I went back home, I screamed in terror because there were 259 ghosts and ghouls watching TV in my living room. There were 93 more ghosts than ghouls. Some of the ghosts were legless and the rest were headless. There were 26 more headless ghosts than legless ghosts. How many headless ghosts were haunting my house?

Question 5 Detective Darry caught thrice as many terrorists as gangsters in Chicago last week and put them in prison. 45 terrorists bombed the prison with dynamite and escaped by flying carpets. There were twice as many gangsters as terrorists in prison after that. How many gangsters did Darry catch? Question 6 My father baked some lizard pies and cockroach donuts last Sunday. He baked twice as many lizard pies as cockroach donuts. None of us liked the cockroach donuts but we ate 35 delicious lizard pies. After that, there were thrice as many cockroach donuts as lizard pies. How many cockroach donuts did my father bake?

Question 7 Brad went fishing last week and caught 4 times as many mermaids as fish with his huge net. He threw them all into his huge truck and proceeded to drive back home. Along the way, 88 mermaids broke the windows and escaped. After that, poor Brad had thrice as many fish as mermaids. How many fish did he catch? Question 8 My pretty sister had 3 times as many pimples as warts on her hairy face. She pinched 248 pimples yesterday. There were 3 times as many warts as pimples on her face after that. How many warts did she have?

Question 9 Sally had $4.90 and Barry had $4.10. They both went for a drive to Chile in their old cars. However, halfway through their journey both of their cars broke down. They each had to buy a spark plug for their cars. After that, Sally had thrice as much money as Barry. How much did each spark plug cost? Question 10 Sorcerer Shaun had $59.80 in his wallet. Witch Wilda had $56.20 in her purse. They wanted to buy a black cat each from Mordu's Magic Shop. After paying for their cats, Wilda had 1/4 the amount of money Shaun had. How much did each black cat cost?

Question 11 Ali Baba entered a cave with two ropes. The blue rope was 90.80 m long and the red rope was 52 m long. He found a crazy gorilla and a mad mandrill in the cave. He immediately cut off an equal length from each rope and tied up the two animals. The red rope he had left was 1/5 the length of the blue rope that was left. How much did he cut off from each rope? Question 12 My mother made 73.2 liters of frog stew and 45.2 liters of centipede soup on Christmas Day. We happily ate an equal amount of frog stew and centipede soup. After that, the amount of centipede soup left was 1/6 the amount of frog stew. How much frog stew did we eat?

Question 13 Luke had thrice as many horses as donkeys on Wednesday. He sold 49 donkeys on Thursday. After that, the number of horses he had was 6 times the number of donkeys. How many horses and donkeys did he have left? Question 14 Caveman Chuthu had 3 times as much money as his wife, Cavewoman Claru. Chuthu wanted to bring his wife on a flying trip to Africa. He made his wife buy a pterodactyl for $8.20. After that, the amount of money she had was 1/9 of her husband's money. How much money did they have altogether after buying the pterodactyl?

Question 15 Adam loves his dogs so much that he sleeps in the kennel with them. Adam had 2 times as many bearded pugs as feathery poodles last year. An evil dognapper kidnapped 69 poodles. Now the number of poodles he has is 1/8 of the pugs. How many dogs does he have altogether now? Question 16 Mandy had 1/4 the amount of money Andy had. When Mandy went jungle-trekking last Sunday, a naughty chipmunk stole $37 from her pocket. Now Andy has 8 times as much money as Mandy. How much money do they have altogether now?

Question 17 Santa Claus gave a box of chocolates to three brothers, Adam, Carl and Kevin. The number Adam took was 1/2 of the number of chocolates Carl and Kevin took. Carl's share was 4/9 of the total number of chocolates. Kevin had 25 fewer chocolates than Adam. a) What fraction of the money was Adam's share? b) What was the total number of chocolates? Question 18 Penny, Jenny and Lenny went to a pond to catch some frogs. They caught quite a number of frogs and divided them among themselves. Penny's share was 1/3 the number that Jenny and Lenny got. Lenny got 5/12 the number of total frogs. Jenny got 18 more frogs than Penny. a) What fraction of the total number of frogs was Penny's share? b) How many frogs were there altogether?

Question 19 Three sisters, Laila, Meena, and Trisha went to a shop and bought some dresses for a party. After buying the dresses, they divided the dresses among themselves. Laila took 1/4 the number of dresses that Meena and Trisha took. Meena took 7/15 of the total number of dresses. Trisha took 14 more dresses than Laila. a) What fraction of the total number of dresses did Trisha take? b) How many dresses were there in total? Question 20 Chan, Lim and Chong went crocodile hunting in the Amazon River. They caught some crocodiles and shared them among themselves. Chan took 1/5 of the number of crocodiles that Lim and Chong took. Chong took 5/9 of the total number of crocodiles.
