Notes: Welcome to the Miami County Project Pride Day & Fair Booklet! The Food and Fashion Board assisted in choosing the overall theme for our 4-H events this year, Celebrating the Growth of 4-H. Included in this booklet you will find information for all 4-H project areas concerning Project Pride Day, the Miami County Fair, and the Ohio State Fair. PLEASE read carefully. Some items have changed. 4-H advisors and other volunteers are asked to please check with your members to ensure that everyone has received this information. We are looking forward to the upcoming Project Pride Day events which will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the Duke Lundgard Building on the Miami County Fairgrounds. As part of completion requirements, youth enrolled in 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) and Miscellaneous projects have their projects evaluated at this event. If unable to attend, members are asked to contact the Extension Office at 440-3945, to register for the make-up dates: July 18, 19, and 20. We would like to thank the Miami County 4-H Advisory Committee for their support! We would also like to thank our 4-H advisors and volunteers for the time and effort they have given to this program your service is immeasurable and priceless! New for 2018 Health and Safety Speaking Contest - Members have the opportunity to compete in these Ohio State Fair categories at Project Pride Day.(Pg.11) Food and Nutrition project members are NOT required to bring a food item with them to PPD. Members are REQUIRED to bring their completed project book, portfolio, and educational display. ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS Ohio State Fair Representative packets will be available on TUESDAY, July 17th AFTER 12 noon. The Extension Office website (miami.osu.edu) will also have the results on TUESDAY, July 17th AFTER 12 noon. Reminders for 2018: An educational display must accompany all projects. Examples: poster or tri-fold display (exception: food projects see below). For a detailed description of an educational display refer to the 2018 State Fair Handbook: http:// www.ohio4h.org/families/ohio-state-fair/state-fair-non-livestock-4-hguidebook. Ohio 4-H Food and Nutrition projects are chosen by Jr. skill/sr. skill levels. Junior level ages are 8-13 and senior level ages 14-18. Every food project must submit a portfolio consisting of 1 page 8 1/2 x 11 per activity area or interest area illustrating the work and knowledge of the member. Example pages are collage, journaling, time line, photos, or other format. Scrapbooking style will NOT add points. (See more food project information above and on page 5.). General Information: Page 4 4-H Project Pride Day July 11th, 2018 Duke Lundgard / Jr. Fair Building Doors Open at 8:00 a.m. Project Pride Day (PPD) begins at 8:00 a.m. Judging starts at 9:00 a.m. Carefully review the times and dates of project judging. Arrive one hour prior to your judging time to set-up and have your book reviewed. All 4-H members MUST bring their completed project books, educational display, and their projects to be judged. Project books will be reviewed and must be completed at the time of check-in. Only members whose books are complete will be considered for Outstanding Project Book Awards and competition at the Ohio State Fair. The Ohio State Fair July 25 August 5, 2018 All participants MUST show up for their project at the designated booth and start time. Once there, the judge will review the number of participants and assign you a judging time. (If you are scheduled for two projects with the same start time, please report to one and after receiving a judging time, return to your other project to see your assigned time. Judges will be told of participants that have to appear at two or more locations.) Eligible Projects: Miami County 4-H projects and members for the OSF are selected at Project Pride Day on July 11th. The following projects are exceptions: Horses - Selection is made at the qualifying show on June 9th in Troy. Information concerning the State Fair Junior Horse Show can be found at: Horse Website: State Horse: https://ohio4h.org/ statewide-programs/animalsciences/horse All other Livestock - Make own entries through the OSF office by June 20th. Dogs refer to: https://ohio4h.org/statewide-programs/animal-sciences/dog/ dog-ohio-state-fair for Agility and Regular Dog Show entry deadline AND Dog Poster Contest deadline. Must have Extension Educator Signature on entries - cards must be completely filled out before an Educator can sign them. All State Fair entries will only be signed in the Extension Office so that project enrollment for the member can be checked in the 4-H Database. (Demetria will be at Jr. Camp, June 11-15th.) Call 614-644-FAIR and ask For the Livestock Department. PPD Particulars: Members enrolled in Writing projects MUST drop them off at the Extension Office no later than 4 pm on June 27th. The judge will bring them to your judging time. Creative Writing participants must still be interviewed at Project Pride Day on July 11th. Advisors: Please call the Extension Office when you know of members that will not be participating in Project Pride Day. This saves money, time, & energy! FCS and Miscellaneous project completion guidelines, judging/exhibition requirements can be found at : http://miami.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth -development/projects 200 All About Dogs and 201D Dog Project (for youth not showing their dogs) will be evaluated at PPD. Do not bring your animal. NO LIVE ANIMAL, INSECT, OR REPTILE will be permitted or evaluated at PPD no matter what the project! If you want your animal to be seen, include a picture with your project. Demonstrations, Health and Safety Speaking Contest will be held at Project Pride Day on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, 2:00 pm. All participants must pre-register. The registration deadline is June 29th. All Ohio 4-H Food and Nutrition projects use MyPlate. Copies of MyPlate flyers have been inserted in older publications. If an additional copy is needed, please contact the Extension Office. Members enrolled in Cake Decorating projects must bring a decorated cake, equipment, and icing to demonstrate skills to the judge. Note: Ohio State Fair (OSF) Companion Animal Day Judging Companion Animal state fair eligible projects will be selected at Project Pride Day. Members are to bring their project and record book and educational display. Do not bring your animal. OSF information, rules, and judging requirements are available at: https://ohio4h.org/events/ohio-state-fair-companion-animalday Companion animal projects include: All About Dogs No. 200, You and Your Dog Project No. 201D, Cat projects No. 216; 217; and 218; 4-H Cavy (Guinea Pig), Project No. 215; Pet Rabbits, Project No. 227; Pocket Pets, Project No. 220, 4-H PetPALS, Project No. 230, and Reptiles and Amphibians Idea Starter, No. 365.13. Also includes Self-Determined Project, No. 365, for youth taking a companion animal not listed as a project above, such as chinchillas, hedgehogs, and ferrets. 4-H Club Booth Space Project Pride Day Awards Presentations: ALL Projects - State Fair qualified projects will NOT be announced at Project Pride Day; rather, they will be announced on the Miami County 4-H webpage Tuesday, July 17th, after 12 noon. State Fair packets will be available for pick up beginning Tuesday, July 17th, after 12 noon. They must be picked up at the Extension Office by 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 20th If not picked up by Friday, the alternate will be notified. ALL State Fair Awards and Ribbons (Honorable Mention, Outstanding and State Fair) will be presented during the Miami County Fair, Saturday, August 11th, 2 pm, in the Duke Lundgard/Jr. Fair Building. If the State Fair Representative declines to go to State competition, they will receive a State Fair ribbon. However, they forfeit the trophy. The Ohio State Fair alternate who competes at state will then receive a State Fair ribbon and the State Fair trophy. Club booth space is limited to 8 x 8 feet. ORGANIZATIONAL ADVISORS must complete the following for their club if interested in a booth in the Duke Lundgard Building. Booth request deadline: July 11th. Please return form to the Extension Office or drop off at Project Pride Day. (if mailing MUST be postmarked by Aug. 1st) Outstanding Project Book: Those interested in submitting their project book for consideration for an Outstanding Project Book award can do so by turning their book in AFTER their judging in the designated box on the information/registration table. Only one Outstanding Project Book entry per project category, please. Animal books can be submitted for Outstanding Project Book by dropping them off at Project Pride Day on July 11th, or to the Extension Office by July 12th, at 4 pm. Books submitted for Outstanding Project Book consideration will be available for pick-up in the Extension Office by July 20th, at 4 pm. Criteria for judging: Neatness, complete information, organization, presentation, demonstrated knowledge in book. PLEASE remember to mark your name, age, and club name on your project book. Ribbons for placings will be presented at the 4-H Awards Ceremony, Saturday, August 11th, at 2:00 pm. Project Pride Day Make-Up Information: 4-H members who cannot participate in Project Pride Day will need to contact the OSU Extension Office no later than June 27th! Youth not judged during Miami County Project Pride Day are not eligible to represent Miami County at the Ohio State Fair. Award ribbons (honorable mention, outstanding, etc.) will not be awarded for those completing make-up sessions due to non-participation in Project Pride Day. However, 4-H members who complete a make-up session will be considered complete for the year. PPD make-ups will be by appointment only, Wednesday, July 18th, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, Thursday, July 19th, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, Friday, July 20th, 10:00 am -4:00 pm., in the OSU Extension Meeting Room. Please contact the Extension Office at 440-3945 to schedule an appointment. Incomplete books: Incomplete books from Project Pride Day and/or Make-Ups must be turned back in to the Extension Office by Monday, July 23th, at 4 pm, for 2nd review. Books will be available for pick up Friday, July 27th, at 4 pm. Page 7

The following awards may be applied for during Project Pride Day on July 11th, 2018. If you wish to apply, please fill out the form on the following page, and submit it to your judge on Project Pride Day. Guidelines for all the following special awards: Page 8 Clothing Award Information Counties may nominate only one individual per award. Award winners cannot win any award more than once in their 4-H career. A finalist will be selected during each Fashion Revue with the overall winner for each award being announced immediately following the Thursday afternoon Fashion Revue. LLOYD AND DORIS ROBY 4-H CLOTHING PROGRAM AWARD: ($500 cash award to be applied to college tuition or other career development opportunities.). Each county may nominate one individual. Nominees must be at least a junior in High School as of January 1, 2018. Nominees must complete Ohio 4-H Achievement record with a photo of the participant in their 2018 total look outfit. Turn in to your judge. Selection is based on overall outstanding achievement in 4-H clothing and evidence of leadership skills throughout their involvement in the 4-H program. OHIO 4-H FASHION REVUE AWARD: (Award and sponsor to be announced): Each county may nominate one individual. Nominee must be enrolled in one of the clothing construction projects. Nominees must complete Ohio 4-H Achievement Record (with clothing emphasis) with a photo of the participant in their 2018 4-H total look outfit. Turn in to your judge. Only nominees that are chosen as State Fair Outstanding of the Day winners will be considered in the selection of this award. Additional Information - Miami County Fair Project Revues: Open to all 4-H members enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences and/ or Miscellaneous projects. To be eligible for modeling awards, modeling sheets must be received at the Extension Office by 4 pm on Friday, August 3rd. No late entries accepted no exceptions. Items modeled in the revues must be carefully returned to the booths. Judging Criteria for Revues: Presentation of the project to the audience. Positive presentation of self (well groomed, good posture, poised, smooth movements, pleasant expression). 7 Clues For a Total Look criteria for judges. Judges criteria can be picked up at the Extension Office. ALL Revues will take place on Sunday, August 12th, in the Duke Lundgard Building; see fair booklet or the fair calendar on pg. 19 for specific times. Miami County Fair Informational Insert August 10-16, 2018 The information on the following pages is specific to the Miami County Junior Fair, making entries, getting fair passes, 4-H activities, etc. Please read carefully. At your summer club meetings, please go over the information that is pertinent to your 4-H members and their parents. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Educators at the Extension Office (937)-440-3945. Miami County Fair ~ August 10-18, 2018 Building Information for 2018: All Miami County 4-H FCS and Miscellaneous booths, exhibits, and events will be held in the Duke Lundgard building located on the north end of the Miami County Fairgrounds. Fair booth Exhibits: Booth space will consist of an 8 x 8 space (this is an approximate measurement). Booths will be divided with metal piping and cloth dividers. Booth sidewalls measure 2 1/2 ft. high, while the backdrop measures 8 ft. high. All booth decorations are only to be fastened by using straight or safety pins, fishing line or other wire, etc. to the cloth. Tape of any kind is only permitted on the metal dividers and not the cloth dividers. Staples and glue are not permitted for use anywhere. Damage done to any of the booth dividers (metal or cloth) will be the sole responsibility of the club housing that particular space. All Non-animal 4-H projects should be displayed in the 4-H Club Booths in the Duke Lundgard Building. Only completed projects may be exhibited in Club Booths. ALL booth projects (including those in the Miscellaneous booth) MUST be in place by 5:00 pm, Thursday, August 9th, as the building will be closed for judging at that time. The building will then reopen Friday morning. Decorating may begin by 9:00 am, Wednesday, August 8th. Note: Booths are judged and awarded 1st through 10th place based on incorporation of current Miami County 4-H theme (see page 23). Note: Youth will receive their $1 fair voucher(s) for entries in their club s booth from their Organizational Advisor AFTER the 4-H booth has been judged. We will ONLY be giving fair vouchers to those whose projects are PRESENT at time of judging. To receive credit, please make sure projects are clearly labeled with 4-H member s name. Fair vouchers can be redeemed beginning Saturday, August 10th at the Secretary s Office. Please note that funds to assist clubs with booth decoration will not be available. Historically, funds were provided to fire proof decorating materials this is no longer necessary. Follow exhibit guidelines listed in the fair book and this booklet. If there are no guidelines, exhibit articles as recommended in the 4-H project book.
