GRAD NATION Thank you to our YES Academy and AOED students for doing a great job at Grad Nation today! We had over 40 student volunteers running our child care room today. From playing games, to serving food, and clean up at the end of the day, they were awesome!! They set a great example for the future Vikings.

MATH Math 1 students are working with algebra tiles to model solving equations. Math 2 students worked in the computer lab, using electronic algebra tiles to model area models (picture). Students made the connection between sum and product of an area. Math 3 students are reviewing quadratic functions and investigating a new function involving division. Precalculus students are reviewing Algebra fundamentals and prepping for their first exam. Calculus students are finding the instantaneous rate of change with algebra & functions, graphs and table of values.

SPED Science did a Virtual Field Trip on the Eastern Indian Ocean on board the JOIDES Resolution (Via Zoom!). We learned how taking samples of the deep ocean floor tells us about Earthquakes and why the 2004 Earthquake caused such a damaging and life taking tsunami in Eastern Asia. We got to tour the ship, speak with Geologists, Paleontologists and Chemists, and have our questions answered. English is creating a video, animation, poem, or fictional story about Using THINK (Ask yourself is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, or Kind before doing, saying, typing, texting, or posting your thoughts).

ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS At Santa Paula High School, the Lady Vikings scored another resounding victory over the Cardinals by the score of 11-7. Aline Rojas/Jacky Sanchez and Bianca Torres/Esmeralda Rios swept at 1 and 2 doubles. Senaida Gallegos and Fatima Perez had victories in singles. The SPHS Cardinals greeted the HHS Vikings with a touching sign of sportsmanship prior to our match. A very classy gesture! Thank you all for your support of Viking tennis. Your Lady Vikings cruised to victory yesterday on the HHS courts with a resounding 15-3 defeat of the OHS Yellowjackets. Stellar performances were turned in by the #1 and #2 doubles teams of Aline Rojas/Jacky Sanchez and Bianca Torres/Esmeralda Rios. Singles victories were recorded by Senaida Gallegos, Fatima Perez and Yadira Ceja. The Vikings travel to Channel Islands next week for the 2nd stop of league play. Thank you for your support of Viking Tennis.

Our football team put on a great performance with a 46/20 win at Fillmore High School Friday night. Congratulations to the players, coaches, cheer leaders, band members, parents and all our supporters world wide! Next game is at home vs San Marcos HS. The cross country team did great too. Top 5 runners averaged just over a 5-minute pace per mile. I'm looking forward to Coach Soliz' pics and results.

Hueneme Varsity edged out St. Bonaventure last night in 5 sets. Amanda VanGelder lead the team with 21 kills, 3 blocks. Aly VanGelder had 9 kills. Zenaida Alcantar had 31 assists and Mya Kraus had 36 digs. Our overal record improves to 8-3. All sets were extremely close, with the last set ending at 18-16. Hueneme is currently ranked 9th in Division 6. Our next home match is next Thursday (9/22) vs. Carpinteria.

What s Happening! S E P T E M B E R 1 6, 2016 AOED some of our students participated in the GradNation Workshop last Saturday. The Engineering and YES students combined in a joint effort to help in child care. YES students practiced some of their new found knowledge in working with groups of children 3-5 and 6-9, and the Engineering students helped the little one build and launch their own rockets! Both academies also had information tables in the quad and gave 15 minute presentations on their programs. Counseling The counselors continue to balance classes as well as teachers. Counselor Cynthia Bogan represented HHS at the UC Counselor Conference held this past Monday at UCSB. Counselor Katalina Martinez played a large role this past Saturday during GradNation day held at. The counseling team is currently planning a senior activity day headed by Counselor Jason Sierra, to be held on October 19. This is the day that OUHSD is giving the PSAT to grades 9 through 11. Seniors will be enrolling to our local community colleges as well as receiving information on the CSU/UC enrollment process and financial aid. Counselor Cynthia Lopez went into the AVID Classes and presented the students with information on the SAT and obtaining fee waivers to take the assessment. Counselor Xochitl Gomez went into the English 4 AEOD classes and presented information on College admission criteria and SAT registration. http://www.huenemehigh.us/

What s Happening! S E P T E M B E R 1 6, 2016 YES The YES Youth and Education Services Academy and the AEOD- Academy of Engineering and Design joined forces at on Saturday, September 10 at the Grad Nation event. A combined group of 35 academy students provided fun and engaging experiences for 30 engrossed youngsters who shot off rockets, played soccer, created with play dough, and designed a mosaic, among a multitude of activities, while their parents attended workshops at the event. YES Academy students, both post-graduates and current students, shared their perspective on how participation in an academy enhanced their high school experience and prepared them for both college and a career in human services, education, and child development and related fields. Grad Nation attendees were informed that the average GPA of YES students is 3.14 and 98% of YES Academy students graduate from high school! AVID Yesterday, we myself received notice that the Certification Self Study for our AVID Program had been approved. Hueneme was award the status of Highly Certified Site, which means the HHS AVID Program consistently meet Certification standards (all 11 Essentials at Level 1 or higher) and has at least 6 Essentials rated at "Routine Use" (Level 2) and/or "Institutionalization" (Level 3), has been certified for at least 2 consecutive years, implementing for a minimum of 4 years. This is possible because of all the collaborative work the AVID Team does throughout the year. http://www.huenemehigh.us/
