Communications Department Victory Field 501 W. Maryland Street Indianapolis, IN 46225 317.269.3542 www.indyindians.com Indianapolis Indians 9-2, 1st IL West LHP Jeff Locke (NR) HISTORY IN THE MAKING The Indians enter the 2014 campaign in pursuit of the first three-peat IL West Division titles in franchise history... The Tribe has only once won three consecutive division titles in any league; 1961 (A.A), 1962 (A.A) and 1963 (IL South). BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS Indy s 2012-13 division titles marked its first ever back-toback IL West crowns and just the fourth back-to-back division titles in team history (1961-63, 1988-89, 1994-95). LAST TIME OUT Prior to Monday and Tuesday s postponements, the Indians nearly erased a 10-2 deficit on Sunday vs. the Clippers, before coming up just short in a 10-9 loss... Indy scored three runs in the fourth, one in the seventh and three in the ninth, but a twoout, bases-loaded strikeout left the tying run standing on third... Starter Phil Irwin was charged with seven runs on four hits and three walks in just 1.1 innings before departing with the loss... Jay Jackson worked a game-high 4.2 IP, allowing three scores while fanning seven. SILVER LININGS SCORECARD Andy Oliver fanned two with a lone knock in a scoreless ninth during the loss... Oliver has now made back-to-back scoreless appearances over which he s totaled six strikeouts with no walks and only one hit (single) in 3.0 IP... The twogame span marks just the second time in his minor league career in which he has made two straight appearances without issuing a walk, with Oliver last accomplishing the feat in 2010 with Double-A Erie on May 28 (7.0 IP) and June 2 (5.0 IP). NICKED BY THE TIME Sunday s marathon clocked in at 3 hours and 51 minutes, finishing just seven minutes shy the Tribe s record for the longest nine-inning game ever played during the Victory Field era (1996)... The team s record was set in a 3-hour, 58-minute affair on July 21, 2006 at Richmond SERIES SHOWDOWN The Tribe and Bats meet today for the first of 22 tilts between the two clubs this season... Indy won four of the first six matchups last season and went 7-6 through the first 15 games between the teams (to July 12), but finished the series with just two victories over the final nine contests... The Indians held a 5-2, ninth-inning lead in the final meeting of 2013, before infielder Matt Hague surrendered a walk-off grand slam with just one out remaining in his save opportunity. SOMETHING S GOTTA GIVE The Tribe was limited to four runs or fewer in 18 of 22 games against the Bats last season, with Indy eclipsing the four-run mark just twice at Slugger Field and in two games Victory Field... The Indians enter tonight s series opener averaging nearly six runs per game (5.8) in 2014, including scoring more than four runs in eight of 11 total contests on the year. ORG REPORT Pittsburgh suffered a 4-0 loss today at the hands of Cincinnati and its complete-game shutout from starter Johnny Cueto... Today s Tribe Starter LHP Jeff Locke Current streak: N/A Locke is making his official 2014 debut in his first start with the Tribe since spinning 4.2 shutout IP on 8/29/12 at TOL... The lefty fanned 10 in 6.0 IP in a lone rehab start with Hi-A BRD on 4/9/14 (2 ER)... He spent 2013 with PIT, going 8-2, 2.15 ERA prior to his All-Star selection, but just 2-5, 6.12 ERA following the break... Locke has gone 4-1 with a 1.47 ERA (7 ER/43.0 IP) and 46 strikeouts to eight walks in seven starts vs. LOU. Wednesday, April 16, 2014 6:35 p.m. EDT Louisville Slugger Field Louisville, Ky. Game #12 Road Game #8 (CONT) The Bucs received two of their three hits from Tony Sanchez and Jordy Mercer. MINOR DETAILS Bradenton notched a 5-0 combined shutout at Palm Beach as the Pirates only affiliate in action yesterday... Pat Ludwig set the stage in his first start (third game) by three-hitting PB through 5.0 shutout IP... Ludwig has a 0.75 ERA with only one ER in 12.0 IP in 2014... Josh Smith followed with 3.0 frames before Jhondaniel Medina struck out two in a perfect ninth... Jonathan Schwind went 2-for-4 with two steals, including swiping home on a double steal. POLANCO IS REDONK-O Top prospect Gregory Polanco tripled on Sunday to extend his league-best hitting streak to 10 games... He has hit safely in exactly half of his at-bats during the streak, going 20-for-40 (.500) with nine runs, two doubles, two triples, two homers and 10 RBI in those 10 games. THE STREAK GOES ON (BASE) Polanco, who coaxed a walk in his hitless debut (4/4), also boasts the IL s longest on-base streak of 2014 (T-1st following Mon./Tues. action), reaching in all 11 games with 20 hits, three walks and a HBP for a.511 OBP on the year. FIRST OF MANY Polanco received his first hardware of the season after being named the IL s Batter of the Week for the period of April 7-13... During that stretch, the top prospect lead the league in hits (14), ranked tied for second in average (.500) and finished third in OBP (.548). THE GREAT LAMBINO Reigning Pirates Minor League Player of the Year Andrew Lambo snapped a season-opening 0-for-8 skid with hits in each of his last seven games... He has hit safely in half of his 22 at-bats during the seven-game stretch, and his league-high.633 OBP in that span was 45 points higher than the next-closest batter following Sunday s action... Lambo s 11 hits were also tied for second in the IL after Sunday, trailing only Polanco s 14 knocks in that time. CHASE THIS With both a base knock and stolen base on Sunday, Chase d Arnaud has hit safely and swiped at least one bag in three of his last four starts since April 8... He is 5-for-14 with five walks and six steals in that span, with his six stolen bases ranking as the most in the IL this season. A DATE WITH DESTINY Michael Martinez nearly completed the cycle on Sunday, and after collecting a single, double and triple in his first three at-bats, found himself at the plate with the bases loaded and in need of a homer... Martinez ultimately drew a walk to finish the game having reached base five times at 3-for-3, 2 BB.
