WELCOME TO THE DUNEDIN BMX CLUB Contact: Email: dunedinbmx@gmail.com Website; www.dunedinbmxclub.weebly.com Facebook: Dunedin BMX 1

History The BMX (Bicycle Motocross) craze first started in the state of California in the United States and quickly spread to New Zealand around 1980 where Dunedin was one, if not the first BMX Club in New Zealand. By 1982 there were over 70 BMX tracks around New Zealand and by 1984 there were over 5000 registered riders. BMX today still has a strong following among kids and adults alike and there's fun to be had for all the family. The Dunedin BMX club runs races for all levels of riders from social, club, national BMX NZ, and school s challenge. Classes include 20 inch wheel, Cruiser, and social MTB or Roadster Class. Despite its daredevil reputation, BMX is no more dangerous than most team sports - that is you'll rarely get more than a few bumps and scratches. Based at Forester Park in North East Valley the track has hosted many National and South Island title races and has had many NZ champions over the years. 2

Club nights Our season runs from September till the end of Day light savings (the following year) Club nights are every Thursday. Registration is between 5.30 and 6.00pm. If you are running late ring or txt the BMX club phone on 0273419241 to preregister before 6.00pm. Racing at 6.15pm sharp!! For cancellations, keep an eye out on our Facebook page or register at www.otagocancel.co.nz The BMX club runs a Hotshot point s format for club nights. Rider s race on their ability and seeding s from their last moto (race). The first two from each moto will go up a grade while the last two of each moto drop down a grade. This means that rider s will end up racing with riders of similar ability but of mixed ages, while also getting a chance to learn from better rider s. This also encourages the rider to ride the best they can to achieve the most points possible. What will I need? To begin with, you won't need a whole lot of equipment. Basically you'll need a BMX bike which is mechanically sound and safety pads on the bike are a good idea. If your bike has a kickstand, chain guard, pegs or reflector brackets, they will need to be removed for on-track safety purposes. Make sure all the bolts are tight, as well as your chain. Also check your grips and make sure that the handle bar ends (bar ends) are covered. What should I wear? Just come prepared with a long sleeve top and trousers or jeans. If you have safety elbow and knee pads it's a good idea to wear these as well. Bring your helmet and wear shoes that have a soft sole. Don't forget to wear socks that cover your ankles. Full finger gloves must be worn. DON T FORGET TO TUCK YOUR SHIRT IN. GRAVEL RASH SUCKS!!! Note: All skin must be covered. If you don't have a Full Face helmet or Full finger gloves, these may be hired from the club 3

Membership fees Full membership requires a club membership and a BMX NZ registration licence. Prospective members can come and race (for free) up to three times, to get a feel for the sport before membership is necessary. Classifications Club licence rider (Novice) $41 (Club racing only) Kiwi sprockets $61 (under 8 years of age) Open Class 20 and cruiser $87 (Race anywhere in NZ) Upgrade to Open licence $51 Training Dunedin BMX provides free race and skills training for all licensed members.
