Eastern Bison Association March 9-11, 2017 Bison Health Certificates & Entry Regulations A Guide for You and Your Veterinarian When bringing Bison to the Eastern Bison Association Show & Sale or even transporting Bison across state lines, the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection is of primary importance. Past experience has shown that many veterinarians are not well versed in what is required by Pennsylvania State Veterinarians and the EBA Show & Sale Committee. Be sure that both you and your veterinarian read this guide. Errors on health certificates (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) can disqualify your animal and by the time you arrive in Harrisburg, PA for the Show & Sale it will be too late to correct any errors. The following information is intended to help both the producer/seller and the veterinarian. We want to insure shipment of bison to and from the Harrisburg, PA Farm Show Complex is smooth and trouble free. Note: New for 2017 There is additional testing/certification required for bulls of all ages. Please see Page 3 Section E. Since some states require this for bulls that are entering their state, we agreed at the last consignor s meeting to add this requirement to make sure all bulls will be available to all bidders.

A. You may have one health certificate for all animals. 2 General Considerations B. Have two (2) copies of the health certificate made for each animal prior to arriving in Harrisburg, PA. You will not be allowed to unload until you have met this requirement and you will be charged for copies by sale personnel. C. Bring TB Test paperwork and Brucellosis (Bangs) Test paperwork for your animals with you. They will not have to be presented to unload, however you may need copies of these papers in case of questions by the Pennsylvania State Veterinarian. D. To avoid confusion, the EBA Show tag, issued specifically for that animal and any vaccination/test/metal ID tag placed in the animal s ear by a veterinarian should be the only ear tag identification on your animals when they arrive in Harrisburg. Place the EBA Show tag in the ANIMALS LEFT EAR (same side of head as your left ear) All ranch ear tag identifications, except RFID tags and/or state tags MUST be removed prior to transport to Harrisburg. E. EBA Show tag number and the metal Test tag number on the animal MUST correctly coincide with the entries on the health certificate. This is VERY IMPORTANT. F. The EBA Show & Sale Entry Requirements are as follows: Male Females Negative TB Test Negative TB Test Negative Anaplasmosis & Blue Tongue (Optional) Negative Anaplasmosis & Blue Tongue (Optional) Negative Brucellosis Test Negative Brucellosis Test, all females that are not OCV d Ivomec (Ivermectin) injection or equivalent treatment and OCV d females over 15 months of age - must be noted on Health Certificate Ivomec (Ivermectin) injection or equivalent treatment Semen test All yearling and 2 year old bulls must be - must be noted on Health Certificate semen tested and documented fertile on health certificate. OCV for Bangs All ages (optional) Certification of virgin bulls under the age of 24 months must be 2 years and older must be bred and verified by your noted on health certificate. veterinarian as safe with calf. Negative PCR Trichomoniasis test for non-virgin bulls and bulls over the age of 24 months G. Minimum Weights by Class Female Calf 425 lbs. Yearling Bull 900 lbs. Female Yearling 700 lbs. Bull Calf 475 lbs. Bred 2 Year old 850 lbs. 2 Year old Bull 1250 lbs. Bred 3-4 Year old 900 lbs. Pair of Aces 750 lbs. each Pen of 2 female calves 425 lb. ea. Pen of 2 bull calves 475 lb. ea. Carcass-Hot Hanging Weight 550-750 lbs. (suggested) 2 Year Old Bulls A consignor may bring only one 2 Yr. Old Bull. The 2 yr. old bull may have 2-4 adult teeth and does not need to be tooth certified. A 2 year old bull with any evidence of a 5 th tooth during check in will be disqualified. The owner will have the option of leaving the disqualified animal in the pens for a $150 yardage fee or loading it back on the trailer. 2 Year old bred females See Bison Teeth Certification Form The Show & Sale Committee s goal in setting the above limits is to improve the overall quality in the Show & Sale. Limits per consignor will be strictly enforced. Limits per class are flexible and may be allowed to increase depending on overall entries.

3 Requirements for entry into Pennsylvania & the EBA Show & Sale The EBA requirements for animals entered in the Show & Sale are more stringent than that of the state of Pennsylvania. A. Females: All females that are not OCV d and OCV d females over 15 months of age, 2 year old heifers, and 3-4 year old bred cows must have a Negative Brucellosis test within 30 days prior to sale date. B. Males: All males must have a Negative Brucellosis test within 30 days prior to sale date. 1. Entries from Brucellosis Quarantined Herds Will Not Be Accepted 2. Entries from the State of Michigan must be from herds that are Tuberculosis Whole Herd Tested within last twelve (12) months. Also if test is older than sixty (60) days the animals that are brought to the Show and Sale must have an individual test again. Both certificates showing negative tests must accompany health papers and verified by your vet prior to unloading at Harrisburg Show and Sale complex. 3. Animals brought from Michigan to Show and Sale and bought by a Wisconsin Buyer must call and obtain a permit number prior to entry into State of Wisconsin (608-224-4872). C. All animals must have a Negative Tuberculosis test within 60 days prior to sale date. D. Anaplasmosis and Blue Tongue tests within 30 days prior to entry into state. These tests are optional. E. Bulls under 24 months of age must have signed statement from veterinarian on health certificate, certifying that they have not been exposed to breeding females. Non-virgin bulls under 24 months of age and all bulls over 24 months of age must have a negative PCR trichomoniasis test 30 days prior to sale date. F. All females 2 years old and older MUST be pregnancy verified by a veterinarian and be safe with calf. Pregnancy verification MUST be indicated on the Health Certificate. Also see Bison Teeth Certification. G. All animals entered in the Show & Sale should be mouthed and age verified by a veterinarian. This verification MUST be indicated on the Health Certificate. All animals will be mouthed by the EBA Screening Committee at unloading. Animal age will be determined by looking for fully erupted adult incisors. Adult incisors in the process of erupting or partially erupting will not move the animal into the next age group. H. All animals MUST be wormed with injectable Ivomec (Ivomectin) or equivalent treatment within 30 days prior to sale date. Treatment and date must be noted on Health Certificate. I. All Yearling and 2 Year Old bulls MUST be semen tested and deemed to be fertile. Semen test results Must be attached to the Health Certificate. J. All Yearling Heifers Must be certified Open or Pregnant by a veterinarian. This certification MUST be indicated on the Health Certificate.

4 FILLING OUT THE HEALTH CERTIFICATE Basic Sections 1. Owner, Seller, Consignor your name or ranch name 2. Purchaser, Receiver, Consignee - For the EBA Show & Sale this should read: EBA Show & Sale Farm Show Complex, Harrisburg, PA. 3. Vaccination or other Treatment If your state form has this section, this is to list any vaccinations that were administered in the past 30 days, such as 7-way, lepto, vibrio, etc and to indicate Ivomec or equivalent treatment. This is pertinent information that should be included. Be sure to ask the veterinarian. Important Sections 4. Animal ID, Ear Tag Number - This section, properly filled out can save everyone involved a lot of problems. BE SURE to include the ID/test metal tag number placed in the animal s ear by the veterinarian AND the Show & Sale Ear Tag number provided by EBA. These two tag numbers MUST correspond correctly and must be entered here. This cannot be stressed enough as a mistake can create problems for the Farm Show Complex, the EBA, the Buyer and the Consignor. 5. Age or Date of Birth - At first this section seems very simple. The problem here may be AGE. The veterinarian is going to sign his name to this certificate and place his reputation at risk. Be sure the age of the animal is correct. 6. TB Test If the form has separate sections for injection date/time and observation date/time the observation date/time must be at least 72 hours after the injection date/time. 7. Brucellosis Test - Requirements here are the result of a blood test: The date of the test and the results of the test must be recorded. In order to prove that a cow is vaccinated (OCVd), a veterinarian must be able to read the tattoo number that was placed in her right ear at the time of vaccination. This can be difficult considering the fact that a black tattoo in a dark skinned animal is often unreadable. The veterinarian may need to shave the ear and use a powerful light to shine from the backside of the ear in an attempt to read the tattoo. 8. Across the bottom of the sheet the veterinarian should note the date that your animal(s) was (were) verified pregnant if you wish to sell females as pregnant. 9. Certificate of Veterinarian and Owner / Agent Certification - You and the veterinarian MUST sign the Health Certificate here and provide the date and address. Have the Veterinarian include his phone number in case the Pennsylvania State Vet at the Sale has any questions for him.

5 NOTICE All consignor checks will be mailed within ten (10) business days following the sale. Trailer parking will be available at the EBA selected hotel and at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex. Make sure the assigned EBA Show & Sale ear tag is placed in the assigned animal s left ear. In accordance with the Harrisburg, PA Farm Show Complex regulations a Screening Committee will be appointed to look over the animals entered in the Show & Sale. Any animal deemed to be without merit as would entitle them to be exhibited may be required to be removed from the Harrisburg, PA Farm Show Complex grounds by the Harrisburg, PA Farm Show Complex manager and/or the EBA Show & Sale Chairman. Judges and the Screening Committee reserves the right to disqualify any animal from the Show & Sale that in their opinion appears to be diseased, injured, in poor condition, excessively aggressive, of the wrong age or weight, etc. Remember to call the Pennsylvania State Veterinarian regarding any questions about transporting animals. Phone 717-783-9550 Fax 717-787-1868 No animals may be left in trailers, trucks, etc. overnight at the Harrisburg, PA Farm Show Complex or the EBA hotel parking lot. No venders of any kind will be authorized to be at the Harrisburg, PA Farm Show Complex or the EBA hotel except those approved by the EBA Show & Sale Committee. This will be strictly enforced. Check in and unloading will begin at 1 PM, Thursday, March 9, 2017. We request you be in line for unloading no later than 3 PM. No animals are to arrive later than 3 PM, Thursday, March 9, 2017 unless given prior approval by the Screening Committee. The consignor assumes all responsibilities in regard to the above terms and conditions of the EBA Show & Sale, including but not limited to, proper documentation of a positive pregnancy test (where applicable) and age of animal(s). The EBA acts only as an agent and will assume NO Responsibility in the event of injury or death to any animal or for any discrepancy between the buyer and the consignor.
