THE INSIDE PITCH WEEK 1 VETERANS OCT. 27 th RH Committee Meets Wednesday to Determine AAAA Playoffs photo by Greg Wagner Exact point of impact: Akron Knights batter vs. the Chicago Knights The Roy Hobbs Legends Division Advisory Committee will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Roy Hobbs World Series headquarters to determine the set up and seeding for the Veterans AAAA playoffs, which will be announced no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday. Although all AAAA managers have been invited to participate on the committee, any interested managers are welcome to come and be involved too. Anyone interested in attending should contact Tom Giffen at World Series Headquarters. Veterans play began Sunday with 12 teams in the AAAA hunt. The Committee will determine the 8 teams that remain in the AAAA double-elimination playoffs and then seed those teams. The Veterans AAAA double-elimination playoffs start Thursday. The remaining 4 teams will be added to the general pool and play a fifth pool game Thursday. Those teams then will be seeded in the AAA or AA single-elimination brackets for Friday. The seeding and scheduling for all AAAA playoff games will be posted at World Series Headquarters at the Player Development Complex and be available on royhobbs.com/world-series as well as being put on the Roy Hobbs message line: 239.533.7694. Additionally, the Thursday pool play schedule will be announced at the same time. For Thursday s pool play, we will have 37 teams in the hunt for games, but with the odd number, one team will either bye out of Thursday s games, directly into the A Division playoffs, or volunteer to play a 7-inning double-header to balance out the Thursday schedule. Please help with dugouts Roy Hobbs Baseball and the grounds crews need your help in the dugouts. When your games are over and you are leaving the dugout, please police it for trash and cups, etc. Your assistance in cleaning up the dugouts each day will be greatly appreciated. Results corrections Please check the posted results and standings each day. Managers should contact Rob at the Tournament Headquarters NOTEBOOK (239.533.7694) with corrections to scores. That s the best way to make sure that playoff seedings and pairings are as accurate as we can make them. Team photo plan Just a reminder that if any team wants to get signed up for the photo plan this week, the manager should call Greg Wagner at either 239-277- 3100 (office phone) or 239-898-8677 (cell phone) any time on Monday in order to get on the schedule for Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. see NOTEBOOK on page 7

7 Senator Carmelo Rios Still Makes Time for Baseball Carmelo Rios stands out as a pitcher for the Puerto Rico Braves. He s also at standout in another field politics. He has been a senator in the Puerto Rico legislature for 11 years. And, he is one politician who didn t dwell on his party and subjects like that. He just talked baseball which he s been playing since he was seven. Now 42, he was the youngest person elected to the legislature in Puerto Rico. After he became a lawyer Carmelo did not think we had time for baseball anymore. He played through college and got scholarships for high school and college. Baseball gave me the chance to go to college. Then he played semi-pro ball. He estimates he s won more than 250 games in his career. It s easy to win when your team gets the hits. He says baseball does not care who you are It is an even field. He at one time thought he would pursue a career in baseball. He was going with his wife Adia at the time and she was not sure she wanted to spend her life with a ballplayer. They have now been married for 10 years and have a daughter. Carmelo says, he was mentored by Victor Pellot, who was a first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who told him, Life is like baseball. Play it right to have a right life. And, that is exactly what he has tried to do. This is his first time to attend the Roy Hobbs World Series, but it won t be his last. continued from page 1 NOTEBOOK Picking up T-shirts The tournament T-shirt is available through Friday only for all registered players outside the Roy Hobbs Store in the screened in patio at the Player Development Complex. 8 NOTEBOOK continued from page 7 to continue to play and will be required to bring his ID card to the Tournament Director or Site Manager before being allowed to return to the playing field. Replacement cards are available at the Roy Hobbs Headquarters. Bring a photo ID to verify identity, and the fee is $5. So, please don t lose the card and please keep it with you. Cleveland Cubs shortstop makes a great effort on a Miami Marlins fly ball. Pitching For the record, here is a recap on the rules on pitching eligibility for the playoffs. Roy Hobbs requirement is that all pitchers who will be starters or closers in save situations (3-run or less difference in the 8 th and 9 th innings) qualify for the playoffs by pitching at least 2 innings 6 outs or 10 hitters during pool play. This is a reminder to all managers that all pitching statistics need to be updated through the first 4 games by noon Thursday. Finally, in the playoffs, those non-qualified middle-inning pitchers will come to the mound from their normal defensive positions where they started the game. That is as important as the spirit of the rule that these non-qualified pitchers who are used as inning-eaters are players who ordinarily are playing other positions. Ice for the injured Just a reminder that Roy Hobbs will furnish ice for injuries. However, we advise managers from the start that they need to provide ice for pitchers arms, if needed. That s something to plan for injuries are another story. For injuries, please contact Hobbs personnel at the field site for assistance. photo by Greg Wagner Glove repair David McLaughlin is the Roy Hobbs World Series glove-repair specialist. He will be stationed at the Player Development Complex during daylight hours this week. Otherwise, you can reach Dave at 941.979.2030 he will make arrangements for you to drop your glove off at the World Series Headquarters and he will set up pickup and delivery service.
