MAKING HER DREAM COME TRUE McKayla Lang started bowling in youth leagues at the age of eight. She bowled three seasons at Fort Belvoir Bowling Center in Virginia, four seasons at Camp Lejeune Bowling Center in North Carolina, and three seasons with Fred City Strikers at AMF Fredericksburg. McKayla was part of a team that represented the Fredericksburg area for two seasons in the Nation Capital Area USBCA Sport Challenge Travel League. She is in her second season with Summer Sport League at AMF Fredericksburg. Last season, she ended with the highest season average for the girls, which qualified her for 2017 Junior Gold National Tournament. This will be her second time bowling at Junior Gold. When she was 12, she bowled in a Pro-Am tournament and out-scored one of her pro teammates by over 30 pins. He gave her one of his favorite bowling balls, which he autographed, said he d never been beaten by a girl, and told her that she might have a future in this sport. That was one of the moments that sparked her desire to possibly become a pro-bowler someday. (She currently has this ball in her arsenal and uses it frequently. It was displayed in her bedroom for a few years, until she was strong enough to use it.) McKayla has qualified for Pepsi every year since she was 8, and this year placed 8th in the handicap division and 5th in the scratch division earning additional scholarship money. She was selected as one of the top ten bowlers in North Carolina in 2013 and made the All Star travel team. They bowled against the All Star teams from South Carolina and Georgia, and her team was undefeated! There were several times throughout the past few years, after a tough loss at a tournament, when she felt defeated that she said, I m sorry Mom and Dad that you keep paying these tournament entry fees and I didn t win. Her parents always replied, It s okay, sweetie, it s well worth it, because one day it will all pay off. Just keep practicing, and improving, because when you get a college scholarship, you will save us thousands of dollars. McKayla has used money from her SMART Scholarship Fund to pay for her first year at Germanna Community College. She was offered several partial scholarships from bowling coaches at the 2016 Junior Gold national tournament, but she didn t feel those colleges were the right fit for her, either academically or geographically. She continued to work hard both on the lanes and in the classroom, and a few months later she was offered a scholarship from Norfolk State University (NSU) to bowl with their women s bowling team, NCAA Division 1, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (the team placed 2 nd in MEAC Divisional this year). After visiting the campus, meeting the coaches and the team, as well as the head professor of her academic interest, she determined that this was the right fit, especially with the athletic and academic scholarships. VA State Hall Of Fame Inductee Jim Wolfe has a long list of Bowling Achievements to his credit. He rolled his first sanctioned 300 game, at the age of 20, in 1977 in his home state of Kentucky. He moved to Virginia in 1981 and from that time has obtained nearly every bowling achievement in his 35 + years of bowling. His hard work, practice, and dedication to the sport have earned him award after award. Throughout his bowling career Jim has bowled in centers up and down the East Coast as well as the Midwest of the United States. He has been a part of the Greater Louisville ABA, the NCABA (now NCAUSBCA), member of the PBA, and his current affiliation in the GFUSBCA. Within the NCABA (now NCAUSBCA) he has been in the top ten rankings of Men s averages multiple times. 1981 1982-9 th 1982-1983 - 1 st 1999 2000-3 rd 2000 2001-1 st 1981 NCABA Association Championship Tournament Jim was Team, Doubles, and All Events Champion. 1981 Jim captured the first Mini Masters Championship, (NCABA) with a 236-232 victory over John Sudduth. 1982-1984 - Jim joined the PBA and competed in Regional events. August 1983 Jim participated in the Buffalo Open, cashing 29 th in a field of 47, finishing ahead of Norm Duke, Wayne Webb, David Ozio, and Brian Voss to name a few. August 1983 Jim participated in the Waukegan Open, cashing 22 nd in a field of 48. 1985 - Jim earned a plaque from The VA State Bowling Association as part of The All Star Team with an average of 222. He was one of the top averages in the state which earned him a place on the team. September 2000 - Jim and his team hold a State League Scratch Record of 3757 from The Virginia State Leagues. 2007 Jim participated in the PBA Senior Manassas Open placing 27 th out of a field of 142. 2014 Jim participated in the Mid Atlantic Senior Tour held an Over/ Under 50 Tournament in Hanover PA where he and is doubles partner Bryan Cavey, barely made the cut in the first round of play to go on to the PBA Stepladder format round. Seeded last, Jim and Bryan walked their way up the step ladder winning every match and earning the title of Champions. Continued on page 5... McKayla Lang continued. Transferring to NSU in the fall of 2017 with academic and athletic scholarships, her parents are able to keep their money in their pockets while she gets a quality education and continues to do the sport that she has been passionate about for more than half her life. She set the goal when she was 12 years old to continue her education after high school and become a collegiate bowler. She has put in all the hard work to make that dream become a reality. McKayla says, It s an amazing opportunity that I ve worked so hard for. After all these years, I finally get to start living my dream. I d like to thank all my coaches that have worked with me over the years. They saw my potential before I even realized it myself. And I d especially like to thank my parents, because without their constant support and encouragement, I would not be where I am today. In closing, McKayla has worked hard to achieve her goals and the youth today should view her as a great role model. Based on research within the Greater Fredericksburg USBC, McKayla is the first to receive this type of scholarship. Please take time to congratulate her for all of her accomplishments. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to her successes. Jim Wolfe continued. In addition to his personal individual achievements and accomplishments in performance, Jim has also been on numerous leagues (as many as 3 or 4 a week) with a variety of bowling teammates and together they have won many titles of League Champs both in Spring/ Summer and Fall/Winter seasons over the years. Jim has exhibited he is a Team player in the respect his teammates know they can count on him to always perform at his best. Jim has also participated in Youth/ Adult No Tap Tournaments and is very generous by helping our youth leagues, donating equipment, and money to help raise funds for their league needs and tournament endeavors. He enjoys bowling with the younger up and coming bowlers. He can see that there is a lot of talent in our youth. Jim more than deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame based on his overall performance. Jim is not one to boast or brag on himself, but if you ever see him in a Center whether he is practicing, bowling on a league or in a tournament you will see that he is watched by many and if he is throwing a new ball you can be assured that the local Pro Shops will have a boost in sales because others will observe what he can do and want a ball that will help bring their game up too.
