March 15, 2013 Dr. Jasmine Kullar, Principal Wildcat Weekly on the Web News From Dr. Kullar Board Appreciation Week We want to thank our board members, Ms. Katie Reeves and Ms. Linda Schultz for doing all that they do. As elected officials, they are responsible for setting educational and personnel policies, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system and approved the school system budget. Ms. Reeves and Ms. Schultz have provided solid leadership by being good stewards of taxpayers dollars and by ensuring that students are prepared for a successful future beyond high school, thanks to our district s five-year strategic plan. I personally want to thank them both for their continued support of our school! Scheduling Timeline January/February is the time where recommendations are made for classes for next year. We have received some feedback as we continue to tweak and improve certain processes. As a result, we are now creating a course booklet that will outline the courses provided as well as the pre-requisites needed (eg. Grades, test scores etc.). We are currently examining the prerequisites and changing some of them as many have been in place for some time. Our goal is to have this booklet on our website which will be referenced in the syllabus students/parents receive in August. If you have any concerns with any of the recommendations, please contact your current grade level administrator. As always, we welcome your input as we continuously strive for excellence in all that we do. CRCT Preparations After much thought and deliberation, we finally decided on a subscription to help prepare students for the CRCT s. We purchased usatestprep.com that will allow students to practice at home. This is a very user friendly website that many of our high schools use as well. If you have any questions regarding the website, please contact our graduation coach Ms. Michelle Robbins. Visit from Indonesia Rika Salmons, Director of AFS-Indonesia, came to Northwestern this week and presented to our seventh grade Social Studies classes about Indonesia as part of their unit on Southeast Asia. The students learned about the geography, social customs, government, and arts of Indonesia. They had the opportunity to answer questions for souvenir trinkets and learned a few words in Bahasa Indonesian. AFS is the largest student exchange organization in the world and has opportunities for American high school students to study abroad around the world. Currently, Fulton County is hosting over 10 international students in our own communities including two at Cambridge High School. For more information please visit AFS.org or contact our PTSA Co-President, Kim Jones, who is also an AFS program returnee! 3/18 Katie Reeves Community Mtg., Milton HS, 7pm-8pm 3/19 Linda Schultz Community Mtg., Crabapple Crossing ES, 9:30am-10:30am 3/20 Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night, Chick-Fil-A, Windward, 6pm- 7pm 3/21 Pride Wall Celebration in the Wildcat Den, 9am-11am 3/21 Talent Show, NMS Gym, 7pm 3/23 & 24 Chorus Southern Star Festival, 6th, 7th & 8th grade, Six Flags 3/23 Track & Field Meet 7th & 8th Grades, Westlake HS 4/1-4/5 Spring Break! Page 2 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Congratulations to Rian Miller, 8th grader. Rian won the Wildcat Day T-Shirt design contest. Her design will be used on this year s Wildcat Day T-Shirt. Congratulations Riam! Congratulations to all our students who participated in last weekend s State Technology Competition held at Macon State College. 1st place winners: Avanthika Ramesh, for Digital Photography Neha Balachandran, for Multimedia Hunter Copp, for Project Programming Daniel Makarishchev, for Robotics Congratulations Wildcats! 3rd place winners: Isabelle Santaguida, for Animated Graphic Design Abhisri Ramesh, for Non-Animated Graphic Design STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS The Northwestern Art and Creative Club will begin meeting again on Tuesdays after school until 5:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 9 th and will run until school is out for summer. We will be working on visual journals, preparing artwork for the 6 th grade camp this summer and painting picnic tables for our garden! All students are welcome and invited! We will meet in Ms. Smittkamp s room. TEACHER SPOTLIGHT This week we would like to highlight Ms. Stephanie Young. When observing her classroom this week, her students were all engaged at different centers working on different activities based on their recent novel study, Chasing Lincoln s Killer. For instance, one group was on the computer playing jeopardy using the vocabulary they learned, another group was going through magazines trying to find facts versus opinions (realizing there were more opinions than facts) while another group was sorting out the events that occurred or did not occur in the novel. Her creativity and energy has been a valuable asset to Northwestern! We became so engaged ourselves that we ended up staying longer than expected! - Jasmine Kullar, Principal
