THE MATCH-UP A pair of 2006 playoff teams will meet for their initial AFC West clash of the season as Kansas City visits San Diego on Sunday. The Chiefs are 1-2 on the season and are coming off their initial victory of the year after registering a tough, 13-10 home win vs. Minnesota (9/23). Meanwhile, the Chargers return home with a 1-2 record after back-to-back road losses, including a 31-24 setback last week at Green Bay (9/23). Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards will be seeking his 50th regular season victory in Sunday s contest. A nemesis to the Chargers in recent years, Edwards owns a 4-2 career record against San Diego. That coaching ledger includes an upset victory in the 2004 AFC Playoffs when Edwards N.Y. Jets squad registered a 20-17 OT win at Qualcomm Stadium (1/8/05). The Chiefs and Chargers split their two regular season meetings a year ago with Kansas City handing San Diego one of its two regular season losses as the Chiefs claimed a 30-27 victory at Arrowhead (10/22/06). Kansas City s resurgent defense currently ranks fourth in the league, allowing just 268.7 yards per game. The Chiefs are tied for fifth in the NFL, allowing an average of just 12.0 offensive ppg. In fact, Kansas City s defense has allowed just three second-half points the past two weeks and hasn t permitted a second-half TD in the season s first three games. Both KC and SD s defenses will be tested by two of the NFL s most productive RBs in Larry Johnson and LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson was named the NFL s Most Valuable Player in 2006 after setting an NFL singleseason records with 186 points and 31 total TDs en route to winning the league rushing title with 1,815 yards. Meanwhile, Johnson earned his second straight Pro Bowl berth for the Chiefs after setting a NFL record of his own with 416 rushing attempts. Johnson finished second in the league behind Tomlinson in both rushing yards (1,789) and rushing TDs (17). Sunday s contest also features a competitor who has lined up on both sides of this heated division rivalry, Chiefs LB Donnie Edwards began his NFL career as a fourth-round draft choice of the KC in 96. After a five-year stint in San Diego (2002-06), Edwards returned to Kansas City in 2007. Edwards owns 39 career takeaways, the most of any LB in the league since the start of the 96 campaign. In seven of those eight seasons when Kansas City won at San Diego, the Chiefs qualified for the postseason. The only exception to that rule was in 2001 when Kansas City posted a 25-20 win at San Diego (11/4/01) and finished the season with a 6-10 record. The Chiefs registered road wins at San Diego in 90-95, 97 and 2003 and made a postseason appearance. The Chiefs lost at San Diego in 2006, but still qualified for the playoffs with a 9-7 mark. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. Kansas City s Defense Needs Another Strong Performance at San Diego by Pete Moris Chiefs Seek to Halt San Diego s Nine-Game Home Win Streak San Diego has won its last nine regular season home games, the NFL s second-longest active home winning streak behind Indianapolis (10). The Chargers last regular season loss at Qualcomm Stadium was a 23-7 setback vs. Denver (12/31/05). The home team has won 17 of the 22 games in this series dating back to 96. Eight of the last 11 Chiefs-Chargers games at Qualcomm have been decided by seven points or less. In fact, just five total points (KC 59, SD 54) separate these two teams in their last three meetings. Ten games (excluding ties) in the Chiefs-Chargers series have been decided by one point dating back to the inaugural AFL season in 60, by far the highest total of any series in the league over that span. Chiefs-Chargers Scoring Stats KC has allowed just 12.0 offensive ppg through the season s first three contests and has permitted just six offensive points in the second half in 2007. San Diego has won 17 consecutive regular season games at home when scoring 30 points or more. You have to go back almost a decade to find the last time the Chargers lost such a contest a 37-31 setback vs. Seattle (11/9/97). During their nine-game home winning streak, the Chargers have averaged exactly 30 points, outscoring their opponents by an average of 30.0 to 22.0. After leading the NFL in scoring a year ago with a 30.8 ppg average, San Diego has averaged just 17.3 ppg in its first three games of 2007. Including a 24-21 setback in the 2006 playoffs vs. New England (1/14/07), the Chargers have scored just 19.8 ppg in their five losses since the start of the 2006 campaign. A low-scoring contest would unquestionably be to Kansas City s advantage. The Chargers are just 4-34 (.105) in regular season action when being held to 17 points or less dating back to 2000, including a 2-13 (.133) mark at Qualcomm Stadium. KC allowed just 20 points in its last trip to SD, including just six points in the second half of a 20-9 loss (12/17/06). That game marked one of just four contests that the Chargers have been held at or below the 20-point barrier at home since the start of the 2004 campaign. Getting Off to a Good Start Would Bode Well for Kansas City Teams holding a halftime lead have won 15 of the last 17 games in the Chiefs-Chargers series dating back to 97. The Chiefs held a 20-6 halftime advantage in their most recent win against the Chargers, a 30-27 victory at Arrowhead (10/22/06). The Chiefs are 7-1 when holding a halftime lead under Herm Edwards. Meanwhile, San Diego owns a 25-5 (.833) regular season record when leading at halftime dating back to 2004. The Chargers have trailed at the half in all three of their games this season and are 32nd in the league in first-half scoring differential at -30 (14 scored/44 allowed). The Chiefs have also trailed at intermission in all three of their games and are 31st in the league with a -27 first-half scoring differential (10 scored/37 allowed). KC s defense has not permitted any offensive points in the first quarter of two games this season, a feat the club has accomplished nine times in 19 regular season games under Herm Edwards. However, San Diego has scored 73.1% (38 of 52) of its points in the second half in 2007. The Chargers led the league in 2006, averaging 16.9 second-half ppg and setting an NFL record with 176 fourth-quarter points a year ago. The Chiefs defense has allowed just six offensive points in the second half this season, tying Tennessee for the NFL lead. KC has permitted just three points in the fourth quarter with only Tennessee (0) allowing fewer. Chiefs, Chargers Two of the NFL s Best at Forcing Turnovers KC owns the NFL s longest active streak of consecutive games with at least one takeaway, a stretch of 22 straight games. San Diego had an 18- game streak in that area halted last week at Green Bay (9/23). KC went +2 (3 takes/1 give) in their 30-27 win vs. San Diego (10/22/06), scoring 14 points off turnovers in that contest, a formula that the club would like to follow this week. KC is 5-2 under Herm Edwards when it boasts a positive turnover differential and is 7-1 under Edwards when it commits one turnover or less. The Chiefs have forced six turnovers in the first three games of 2007. San Diego ranked third in the league with a +13 turnover differential (28 takes/15 gives) in 2006. However, the Chargers have already committed six giveaways in their first three contests and are even in 2007 (6 takes/6 gives). San Diego has posted a 19-2 (.905) record with a positive turnover margin at home dating back to 2002, including a streak of 15 consecutive wins. The Chargers are just 2-12 (.143) at home with a negative turnover margin over the same span. San Diego was +2 in its first home game of 2007, a 14-3 win vs. Chicago (9/9). Chiefs Defense Has Fared Well vs. Chargers QB Philip Rivers The Chiefs defense has produced a strong showing in both of QB Philip Rivers previous starts against KC. In Rivers most recent meeting with the Chiefs, he was limited to eight completions for 97 yards, his lowest totals as a starter in both categories. The Chiefs also forced two INTs in that contest as Rivers compiled a career-low 12.4 rating at San Diego (12/17/06). The Chiefs defense has forced at least one INT in six of its last seven games. KC currently ranks fifth in the league in both pass defense (155.7 ypg) and opponent passer rating (71.2). The Chiefs own a 19-5 (.792) record when they force two or more INTs dating back to 2002. KC is 18-6 (.750) in the regular season when Johnson tops the century mark, including victories in eight of its last 10 such contests. Johnson has also registered nine catches for 86 yards with a 28-yard TD reception in his last three outings against SD. Over that fivegame stretch, Tomlinson has averaged just 85.4 rushing ypg. While Tomlinson did register a 199-yard peformance in the last meeting between the two teams that included an 85-yard TD run, it was just his fourth career 100-yard contest in 11 career starts vs. Kansas CIty. The Chargers are 30-8 (.789) when Tomlinson tops the 100-yard barrier, including a streak of 22 consecutive wins. However, San Diego is just 1-3 against the Chiefs when Tomlinson has a 100-yard day. After gaining just 56 yards of offense in the first half, Kansas City opened things up in the second half with a pair of long scoring drives, while the Chiefs swarming defense held the Vikings in check. The Vikings built a 10-0 lead on the strength of good field position and rookie RB Adrian Peterson. Starting at midfield on their first possession, QB Kelly Holcomb connected on passes of 10 and 11 yards before Peterson bounced a run off right tackle and scored an 11-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead. Minnesota would tack on a field goal after a Chiefs turnover. DE Spencer Johnson hit QB Damon Huard as he was about to pass, forcing a fumble that the Vikings would recover at the KC 33-yard line. The KC defense stiffened and the Vikings would settle for a 22-yard field goal from K Ryan Longwell. The Chiefs would get on the board when DE Jared Allen forced a Peterson fumble and K Dave Rayner banged through a 39-yard FG to make the score 10-3 late in the half. Trying to mount a last minute rally before halftime, Minnesota drove as deep as the KC 30-yard line. However, the Vikings drive was snuffed out when Allen sacked Holcomb on both third and fourth down to end the half and keep the Chiefs within one score at 10-3. That set the stage for the Chiefs second-half comeback. Kansas City s defense pitched a shutout after intermission and the offense did just enough to escape Arrowhead with the season s first victory. Trailing 10-3 at halftime, the Chiefs offense was stuck in neutral and having little success mounting a rushing attack. Minnesota boasted the NFL s top run defense a year ago and used a constant eight-man front to hold RB Larry Johnson to just 42 yards on the day. However, Johnson s work keeping the defense honest allowed QB Damon Huard to orchestrate two scoring drives in the second half. Huard had only 37 passing yards at intermission, but he doubled that on Kansas City s first possession of the second half. Using his big weapons in TE Tony Gonzalez and WR Dwayne Bowe, Huard went fourfor-seven for 70 yards, setting up Rayner for a 49-yard field goal to cut the defecit to 10-6. The Chiefs defense forced a punt on the Vikings ensuing possession and the passing game went back to work. Huard hit Bowe for a 15-yard gain on the first play, then found Gonzalez for 15 yards on a third down moments later. After another 17-yard catch by Bowe, the first-round pick outleaped CB Cedric Griffin and snatched a brilliant 16-yard TD pass in the corner of end zone. Bowe s second career TD gave the Chiefs their first lead of 2007 season at 13-10 early in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs defense needed two more stands to make the lead hold up, but answered the call on both occasions. Unfortunately, the Sunday evening game resulted in a 20-9 loss, the third straight setback for the Chiefs. A pair of big plays on special teams played a key role in the outcome, while Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson continued his record-setting pace, finishing the game with 199 rushing yards and a pair of TDs. San Diego set the tone of the game on special teams on its initial possession of the contest. The Chargers faced a fourth-and-six from its own 43-yard line and lined up in a punt formation. A direct snap went to RB Michael Turner who went around right end for a 25-yard gain and first down. From there, Tomlinson added to his NFL-record total TD tally as he scored on a 15-yard run. The Chargers gained all 74 yards of the drive via the run in taking a quick 7-0 lead. Chiefs rookie DE Tamba Hali intercepted a QB Philip Rivers pass later in the first quarter, setting up a field goal from K Lawrence Tynes. The 45-yard try hit the left upright and bounced over the crossbar to the cut the Chargers lead to 7-3. Moments later, the Chiefs were on the wrong end of a strange special teams miscue. San Diego faced a fourth-and-nine from its own 13-yard line when S Bernard Pollard came around the right end to get a hand on the P Mike Scifres punt. The bouncing ball was touched by Chiefs RB Derrick Ross and was recovered by the Chargers to give San Diego a first down. San Diego took no time at all to covert its second big special teams play of the game into a touchdown as Tomlinson raced untouched for an 85- yard touchdown run. The score gave the Chargers a 14-3 lead in the second quarter. KC cut into the Chargers 14-3 halftime lead on its second possession of the third quarter. QB Trent Green completed five passes on the drive that led to another Tynes field goal, this time from 52 yards out. San Diego responded when Turner returned the ensuing kickoff for 58 yards to the Kansas City 43- yard line. The Chiefs defense would keep San Diego out of the end zone and force a K Nate Kaeding 30- yard field goal that upped the Chargers lead to 17-6. Early in the fourth quarter, Chiefs S Greg Wesley intercepted a Rivers pass and returned it to the San Diego 39-yard line. Kansas City got as far as the Chargers six-yard line before a Green pass sailed just out of the reach of TE Tony Gonzalez. Tynes brought the game to within one score as his third field goal made the score 17-9 with 7:01 left. QB Philip Rivers who finished with a paltry 12.4 passer rating would find WR Vincent Jackson for a 46-yard pass to set up a Kaeding 22-yard FG. That gave the Chargers a 20-9 lead that would hold up for the remainder of the contest.
