~O R STOP BERNARD'S RUN QRMOND'S FINISH TOO MUCH FOR NORTH Shocking Kicking by Parade By GEORGE McTAGGART Four goals against the wind by Caulfield Grammarians in the third quarter was a significant factor in their 35-point win over St. Bernard's whose run of four wins in a roxv was broken. Ormond's big men got them out of a tough spot when they helped the leaders to put on five goals against the wind in the last quarter. Ormond led North Old Boys by only three points at three-quarter-time, and looked to be in trouble, but they ran out winners by 16 points. Old Paradians threw away their chances of beating University Blues by shocking forward work. They kicked only two goals from 15 scoring shots in the first half and finished with the shocking tally of 6-25. Accurate kicking by Caulfield took them to the front in the second term against St. Bernard's, who had made good use of the wind in the opening quarter. But just before half-time, St. Bernard's whipped on 2 goals to be 3 points ahead at the interval. They carried on with the job in the third, and appeared to be gaining a grip on the game, then Caulfield took charge and were a point in front at the final change. The last quarter was all Caulfield as they slammed on 8 goals to score a convincing win. North's pace worried Ormond in the first half and Ormond trailed by 17 points at the interval. They kicked 6 goals in the third term and then held North to three in the last to preserve their unbeaten run. A burst of 11 goals in the second quarter gave Coburg a commanding lead over Melbourne High, and although High" kicked 6 goals in the third, Coburg ran away in the last term with 9 more goals to win easily. Although Parade's forwards must take most of the blame for their side's poor showing, credit must be given to the Blues' defenders, who maintained consistent pressure on their opponents all day. The Blues won by 39 points. Monash Blues scored their first win at the expense of De La Salle. Monash led by 14 points at half-time, and came home strongly to finish 6 goals in front. Ormond still hold top place, four points ahead of Caulfield, with Coburg four points further behind. Then come Parade, St. Bernard's and North Old Boys. Collegians' ability to nullify Geelong's use of the wind in the first quarter played a big part in their 23- point win over the leaders. Geelong are still on top on percentage, with University Blacks, Ivanhoe and Old Trinity now level with them on points. The Blacks scored by a mere point from Kew in an exciting day, for the Reserves also had a narrow win - by 3 points. Ivanhoe were too good for Old Scotch who went under by 29 points, Old Trinity proved much too strong for Tooronga-Malvern and Old ;Carey scored a big win over Uni. High. Old Scotch and Collegians are only four points outside the top four, with Old Carey and Kew a game further behind. with a 4-goal win over Fairfield, who now hold fourth place only on percentage from National Bank. Bank won by 20 points over Old Melburnians. Old Xaverians moved up to sixth with a big win against Commonwealth Bank and St. Kilda CBC had 37 points to spare over Old Haileybury. Alphington's 20-point win over Hampton Rovers put them into the four; Old $''*hton (second) overmore whelmed 15 goals, and b 'Old beat Footscray Tech, by 2 goals Geelong. Accurate kicking enabled AMP Society to score a surprise 21-point win over Marcellin (second) to 10.14. It was 1515. State Savings Bank (leaders) trounced AJAX, to let Glenhuntly who in dropped to fifth. Old Ivanhoe who are third, had to struggle against West Brunswick, and won by only 14 points. Bring your own eats, etc. If you don't want to play the sports, come along and tell everyone how well you went today - but be there. Tuesday night next is our Social Evening at Elsternwick Park. We want as many umpires as possible to attend. Eating starts after training at 6.45 p.m. Do you know? - The correct size of a standard football is 22~ inches by 29~ inches and the weight is between 16 and 17 ounces. De you know? - The 19th and 20th men are considered to have taken part in the game, although not having taken the field. Do you know? - A team which commences play with fewer than 18 men, shall be allowed to complete its number at any stage of the match from the players named. In the V.A.F.A. a team must have a minimum of 16 players ready to play before being allowed to commence the match. The time allowed between the end of the first quarter and commencement of the second quarter shall not exceed 3 minutes. Between the 3rd and 4th quarters the interval shall not exceed 5 minutes. Do you know? - If a ball kicked by a player strikes an umpire or trainer and without touching the ground is caught by another player after having travelled not less than 10 yards a mark will be awarded. Do you know? - A mark shall be given to a player who is out of bounds, but marks the ball before it has passed completely over the boundary line. Peter Rhoden reached the century mark in coaching Old Xaxerians while Graham Weinert played his 100th game for Kew. St. Bernards were undefeated leadin "C" Section with 7 wins. "A" Section umpires for the day were Mance, Marsden, Norman Harradence and George. 10 years ago - 1962 De La Salle (A), Parkside (B) E.S &.A. BALL BRIEFS 150 GAMES AT PARKSIDE Another of the Gleeson brothers reaches a milestone at Parkside. This time it's Peter's turn with 150 games today against the O.G.G.'s. Peter, the original Milky, has played most of his football with the club at full back and like his brother Danny is a hard man to beat. All the best Peter and keep "making yours milk. " 150 TO NATIONAL BANKER National Bank extend congratulations to Peter (P.G.) Morris on his 150th game today against Assumption. Peter, a life member of the club, has played in most positions during his career. This year he has capably filled the full back position. We can only hope that he puts off going overseas until he makes the 200 Club. Well done P.G. CENTURY TO R.O.B. MAN Congratulations to R.O.B.'s Peter "Barney" O'Brien who plays his 100th game today. Peter has always played a very active role in R.O.B.'s history with the Amateurs. He has won several club trophies and held the position of Secretary up until this season - a great individual achievement. So along with his good football and administrative capabilities the club hopes to have Peter around for many years to come. Well done "Barney" from everyone at R.O.B.'s. ASSUMPTION UTILITY REACHES 100 Assumption's star bachelor, T. M. Fitz, plays his 100th game with the club today. Terry has kicked 31 goals in his career and has adapted himself to many different positions. Our thanks and congratulations to "Speedy. " CENTURY TO ALPHINGTON PIVOT 100 games at Alphington to Barry Shearer, who has missed only three matches since we won him. Plays in or around the centre with a minimum of fuss and noise and boasts that he reaches his peak of physical fitness the last week of the season. He has been an asset to the club both on and off the field. 100 UP TO O.G.G.'s MAN One hundredth game comes up this week to Old Geelong player Richard Weibye. Dick has represented his club since 1966, always polling high in best and fairest voting, and on his day one of the best marks in the competition. Well done, Dick, and we look forward to plenty more games to come. 100 GAMES TO OLD BRIGHTON "CHAMP." James Agar has been an institution at Old Brighton for many years and recently played his 100th game for the club. Never short of a word, James is walking taller than ever, and with the smell of a premiership in his nostrils is even managing a few goals every week. Congratulations are also in order to four new members of the 50 games Club - Owen Millis, Andrew Mullett, "Buddy" Hamilton and "Jo" Nicholls have all chalked up the half-ton this season and are helping the 'tonners towards a couple of flags this year. Well done, men, on some great football. Congratulations to Old Trinity's Doug Frood in playing his 50th game for the club last week. Doug is a most enthusiastic player and has also been of great assistance in off-the-field activities.
