Submitted by GiGi Haban The Komen Race for the Cure has become the largest series of 5K runs and fitness walks in the world. Races will be held in more than 100 U.S. cities and 3 foreign countries in 2002, with over 1.3 million participants expected. Since the Komen Race for the Cure series began in 1982, the foundation and its affiliates have raised more than $240 million and it is credited as the nation*s leading catalyst in the fight against breast cancer. 75% of the proceeds remain in the local community where the race is held, helping to support breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs. An estimated 203,500 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States during 2002. An estimated 39,600 women will die from breast cancer in 2002. An estimated1,500 men will be diagnosed & 400 men will die of breast cancer during 2002. Breast cancer is the leading form of cancer among American women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59. Every 3 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and every 13 minutes a woman loses her life to the disease.
