Mermaid Challenge Badge This challenge badge is all about mermaids and under the sea life. This badge can suit all ages and can be easily adapted to suit all abilities and budgets. I hope you enjoy completing this badge. Section 1 and 2 are to be completed by everyone. Rainbows are then to complete one from each section. Brownies are then to complete one from each section plus one more from any section. Guides are then to complete one from each section plus two more from any section. Section 7 is optional depending upon budget. Section 1 In the little mermaid, ariel likes to collect things that she finds in the sea. This section is all about collections and collectables. Section 2 In the little mermaid, ariel looses her voice and is unable to speak. This section is about other ways to communicate with one another. Section 3 Mermaids live in the sea, so they must eat seafood! This section is all about seafood. Section 4 This section includes different mermaid crafts for all budgets. Section 5 This section has different mermaid puzzles for you to complete. Section 6 In this section I have included different sea songs that you could sing as part of this badge, or even learn a new song. Section 7 This section depends upon budget, but there are a few different trips you could go on as part of this badge.

Section 1 In the little mermaid, ariel likes to collect things that she finds in the sea. This section is all about collections and collectables. Bring in your collection and present it to the rest of the group. Talk about why you like to collect this item and what you like about it. Section 2 In the little mermaid, ariel looses her voice and is unable to speak. This section is about other ways to communicate with one another. Write a letter using pen and paper to parents or leaders explaining what they think it might be like to live under the sea. Learn to say your name using finger sign language. For more of a challenge, learn to say a greeting such as Hello, my name is..

Section 3 Mermaids live in the sea, so they must eat seafood! This section is all about seafood. Have a fish and chip night Taste different seafood s and guess what they are. If you don t want to use actual seafood then here are a few alternatives. Use carrot sticks as crab s legs, shrimp sweets as shrimps. Name as many seafood s as you can, what do you think they taste like. Try some Ocean Water, this can be any blue coloured drink. Remove from original packaging and put into a jug. Decorate biscuits using icing, make starfish and seashell shapes. Use edible glitter once finished to add a mermaid sparkle to them. Make a sweet oyster (see below) Sweet Oyster Recipe Use Carousel Oyster Delights (can be found in Home Bargains). Fill with either whipped cream or buttercream icing mixed with a food colouring of your choice. Then add either a white malteaser or white marshmallow as the pearl.

Section 4 This section includes different mermaid crafts for all budgets. Create a jellyfish using paper plates and a mixture of tissue paper and left over material. This can be done in two different ways. The easier way is to cut the paper plate in half and decorate any way you want. Then attach tissue paper to the other side of the plate. The other way to do this is decorate the whole plate and attach a variety of materials underneath. Create your very own mermaid using a toilet roll tube and some coloured card/paper. As shown here, add some paper around the bottom of the tube for the tail and add a bit extra sticking out to the side. Then add some paper to the top of the tube for the hair and fold gently to make it stick out. Then use coloured pens to draw on the face and mermaids top. All you need is paint, paper and your fingers! Use your hand to create the tail and hair just like this picture shown here. This is a messy but very fun activity.

Create mermaid friendship bracelets. You can do this by using coloured string, or even use seashell beads. These are available from Baker Ross. Create a message in a bottle. Collect old glass milk bottles or any bottle of your choice. This could work with ordinary plastic drinks bottles too. Use coffee mixed with water to stain paper to give it an old rustic effect. Then write on the paper with a message. It is up to you what you write on your message. You could imagine you are lost at sea, what would you write? Or write a letter to people in the future and bury these to create a time capsule. You could even add sand into the bottom of these bottles and decorate the outside of these with glass pens or stickers. They will also make a great ornament. Use a mermaid stencil or colouring page and different materials such as felt, tissue paper, glitter and sequins. Use different materials to stick onto the mermaid and decorate it. Ribbon works well for the mermaids hair but this can be done with anything. Find some mermaid colouring in pages.

Section 5 This section has different mermaid puzzles for you to complete. Attached below. Section 6 In this section I have included different sea songs that you could sing as part of this badge, or even learn a new song. Attached below. Section 7 This section depends upon budget, but there are a few different trips you could go on as part of this badge. Spend the day at the beach, see who can build the best mermaid out of sand. Can you spot any mermaids from the beach? How many different shells can you find? Go crabbing Take a trip to the swimming baths, see who can swim like a mermaid. Visit a sea life center or aquarium. Why not finish off the badge by watching The Little Mermaid all together and eating some mermaid snacks.
