Commodore s Comments for March 2018 We are now well into the second half of our summer season and it s certainly been warm enough for water sports. We had a very enjoyable day with the Victorian Explorer 16 Association where we held the first two heats of their state championships. We met many very accomplished sailors and saw some beautifully prepared boats. Our local entrants Kylie and Frank both performed well and enjoyed sailing in company with their peers. Eastern Region Regatta was held and Port Albert on 3 rd and 4 th of February. We have photos in this issue of some of the members who supported this event. The remainder of our calendar is coming together well we anticipate some most enjoyable sailing through to the end of the season. Sail training will also continue in the new-year. If you know of anyone who is contemplating sailing as a pastime feel free to extend an invitation to join in with this program. Most members will be aware of the decision taken by Latrobe City to close the caravan park at the Pondage. The Club was consulted on this decision last year. Our position was that as long as we could continue to run Sauna Sail we had no other concerns. No doubt this debate will continue for some time. Mainsheet March 2018 Page 3

TRIPLE EXPRESSO GOES TO THE BIG SMOKE Andrew McColl After quite a few years of sailing and racing on the Gippsland Lakes we decided that we needed to extend ourselves by competing in a higher level of sailing. The 2018 Australian Multihull Nationals were changed from South Australia to Victoria which sealed our decision to take part in the regatta at Sandringham YC on the 19-20 January. It was quite a long and arduous preparation as a new trailer had to be constructed and a new tow vehicle purchased. The boat was also taken to Hastings YC to be weighed by lifting with a crane and the sails measured to obtain a handicap rating. Racing involved three races on the Friday. Crew consisted of Clancy, Rachelle, Bruce and myself. Conditions varied from perfect to frustrating with the perfect being winds in the high teens and the frustrating being stuck in a patch of calm while the other boats sailed past us about 15 metres away in one of the races. We also had an OCS in another race which doesn t do your results much good due to the length of time to return back to the start line. Tim replaced Bruce as crew on the Saturday and Sunday Saturday was the passage race and was champagne multihull sailing. The course took us from Sandy YC south for several kilometres before we headed out in to the bay and then north to the mouth of the Yarra river on a long reach/run. We repeated this course twice in wind strengths in the high teens and low twenties. The reaches were spectacular runs under the big kite. Another two round the buoy races on the Sunday saw us getting good starts and doing much better with several mid fleet results. Mainsheet March 2018 Page 7

Bruce, Clancy, Rachelle and Andrew at the multihull nationals at Sandringham YC And finally.. Sauna Sail The Committee has had advice that the facilities that are essential for the Sauna Sail Regatta will be in place next June. Consequently the event will proceed and we will be seeking the support from all club members to ensure we provide our visitors with the best possible sailing experience. Please put the long weekend in June on the calendar. We have begun serious planning and will be seeking input from all our members on how to get the best outcome for the club and visiting sailors.
