The Point Feb/Mar 2017 Hi and welcome to the February/March 2018 edition of the Point With this being the first newsletter for 2018 and the end of February fast approaching, I hope everyone had a great break over the holiday period although for most it is probably like a distant memory. For me it was a trip to visit my daughter in Canada, so unlike everyone at home basking in the warm weather for me much of my holiday was in sub-zero temperatures. That said I think we would all agree the weather has been very warm, particularly at night, but I dare say when we are in mid-winter we will look back and remember that this was a good summer (although spoiled with the odd bit of rain that certainly did not help the return back to interclub but has made the lawns grow like crazy). As is often the case, while we are starting to now get into the backend interclub, March and early April see us move in to quite a busy period with club champs for both seniors and juniors as well as the Charman Cup and Cucksey Sheild/Fisher Cup local tournaments. So look out for these dates and good luck to all those who take part in the events. And thinking about club events, as I look back over the last couple of year s newsletters I appear to be repeating the same message/request in that the Wednesday night social night seems to have dropped off with only a few courts being used. So a big thanks to Dave Barry for stepping up to take charge of the Wednesday night tennis and looking to shake it up. So please help support his efforts and come down to have a hit and of course the BBQ run by Terry. There is also a prize of a Fuugo Bluetooth Speaker RRP $460 to be won at the end of the season the more times you come down the more entries you ll receive! Michael Petersen Club President SENIORS Sunnyhills Senior Club Champs: Singles Club Champs will be held on Sunday 11th March from 11:30am Gabriel has offered to step down and give us young ones a crack at the title!!! 1

Doubles Club Champs will be held on Sunday 25th March from 11:30am. If you're unable to find a partner please put your name down and we will try to match you up with someone keen as well. JUNIORS We have had a rather wet start to the season, however thankfully it s improving. Thank you to those team Managers who have worked to re-schedule their round 1 game. We are looking forward to our singles Club Champs this coming weekend. Although it may be slightly daunting for some it s certainly character building and it s great to get involved. All those participating should feel proud of themselves. We look forward to a fun day at the club. We will have our doubles Club Champs on Sunday 8 th April. It s no problem if you don t have a partner Gabriel will ensure that everyone has someone to play with for the competition. Just be sure to confirm you are playing. I will be in touch about this closer to the time. We have the Charman Cup Juniors tournament coming up on Sunday 18 th March. This is an annual event where two of our strongest boys and girls in the age groups 10-14 years compete against all the local clubs for the Charman Cup trophy. We are in the process of finalising our team and I am sure they will do the club proud. Match play continues every Friday come along and enjoy some structured points, tennis drills and social time with your club mates. ORANGE / GREEN / BRONZE 1 AT 4-5PM BRONZE 1 INVITATION/ BRONZE 2 / SILVER / GOLD AT 5-6PM Enjoy a Sausage on the BBQ for free and you can buy a can of soft drink for $2. Thank you to those lovely mums who have helped out on the BBQ on these Fridays kids love it and your humour and help is so much appreciated As you know we have a great ratio and standard of coaching at Sunnyhills. Gabriel heads up our coaching team together with Josh and Ollie. We have Tom, Jamie and Axel, our older Sunnyhills players, who are assisting on court and for who we are very grateful to for their involvement. If you wish to look at any private coaching options please just have a chat with Gabriel directly. Thanks again to our Interclub team Manager you are doing a fantastic job See you on the courts Amanda Pritchard Junior Convener 027 495 8438 3

And our Hotshots full of energy every Saturday morning! Sunnyhills Tennis Club have put in place a new training programme dedicated to those younger players who would like to focus on tennis as their primary sport for most of the year. It has had a great start with a bunch of players eager to take their skills to the next stage! If parents want more information on this please don t hesitate to contact Amanda or myself. An email went out to junior players' parents on 12 th Feb with all you need to know about this! Looking forward to a busy month ahead with junior singles & doubles club champs & the Charman Cup! Finally, I had the opportunity to be line umpiring at this year's ASB tennis in Auckland for both ATP / WTA tournaments. It was a great experience after doing some past Davis Cup events back home & smaller junior ITF & age group Nationals in Auckland during the winter.
