HEAD COACH STEVE SPRINGTHORPE Methodist College, 1987 4th Season Overall Record: 39-30-10 (4th year) Record at Fresno State: Same (4th year) In just three seasons, Steve Springthorpe has quickly transformed the Bulldog soccer program into a WAC title contender with annual NCAA Tournament aspirations. His work in turning around the Fresno State soccer program has been acknowledged by the conference, as he enters his fourth season as the reigning WAC Coach of the Year. Last year, the Fresno State turned a corner as the Bulldogs 13-5-3 overall record stands alone as the best winning percentage for any team in school history. In addition, the Bulldogs won their first regular season WAC championship since 1999 with a 6-0-1 record. In addition to leading the team to the best record in school history, Springthorpe has helped catapult the Bulldogs onto the national stage. Following a scorching start where the team began the year 6-1-1, including a 2-1 record against ranked opponents, the Bulldogs themselves entered the Top 25 for the first time since 1999, reaching as high No. 22 in the Soccer America poll, the highest the women s team has ever been ranked. Emphasizing the individual talent on the team, Fresno State led the entire conference with 6 All-WAC selections, including five first-team members. Official's signature Reyes Scores Two Goals on Senior Night Nov. 1, 2007 FRESNO, Calif. - Amanda Reyes couldn t have asked for a better way to close out her collegiate career at Bulldog Stadium. The senior midfielder scored two goals for the second straight match to lead Fresno State to a 2-0 nonconference win over Cal-State Bakersfield on Thursday. Along with Reyes, Thursday was the final home game for Aubrey Tennant, Megan Tennant, Brittany Thomas, Andrea Alires, Christina Gilbert, Chelsea Davis and Andrea Salvador. All eight seniors have been with coach Steve Springthorpe since he arrived at Fresno State. This group has been a part of a WAC tournament championship and a WAC regular season championship. The Bulldogs are still in the hunt for a share of the regular season championship this year. I told this class at the beginning of the year that this group of eight seniors has really been a rock for our program, Springthorpe said. They are a hard working bunch of girls. They play hard. They love the game. They are great teammates and have great chemistry. They have done everything that I have asked them to do. That was evident on Thursday as the Dogs out shot Bakersfield 25-12 and had 11 shot on goal attempts to the Roadrunners three. Fresno State didn t waste anytime in getting on the scoreboard as Reyes netted her first goal in the seventh minute when she booted in a loose ball inside the box after an Andrea Alires corner kick. In the second half, Reyes took a pass from Nicole Gutierrez and fired a 35- yard shot that bent into the top right corner of the goal. I am happy for our seniors, Springthorpe said. The last two years we have done really well at home. We had a chance to play them all tonight. We defended well and got another shut out. It was a good night for the Bulldogs for sure. Bulldogs Defeat Nevada, 3-1 Nov. 4, 2007 FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women s soccer team finished the regular season in an impressive manner as the Bulldogs beat Nevada 3-1 Sunday afternoon. The win ups Fresno State s record to 11-6-1 going into next week s WAC tournament. The Bulldogs were out shot 11-9 for the game but they connected on the opportunities when they had them. Amanda Reyes gave Fresno State a 1-0 lead at halftime off an assist from Andrea Alires. Goalkeeper Kaity Revel came up with an impressive save by blocking a shot at the top of the box to maintain the Bulldog lead going into the half. Kaity played really well today, Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said. She had great distribution, got an assist and set up our third goal. She was very good. Andrea Salvador put the Bulldogs on top 2-0 in the 70th minute when she took a punt from Revel and slipped the ball past the Nevada keeper. A little over a minute later, another punt by Revel set up Salvador for what looked to be her second goal of the game but a red card was called on the Wolf Pack keeper, allowing Chelsea Davis to score on the penalty kick. Nevada scored its goal off a corner kick in the 88th minute. Fresno State travels to Boise, Idaho next week for the WAC tournament.
