NEWSLETTER Sunday 26 th March 2017 Welcome to Marden Russets Junior Section s newsletter, which is emailed to members, families and friends every week. Two teams were entered, Marden Apples and Marden Pears. All the girls were really excited about the tournament and it showed very early on with both teams playing well. MARDEN APPLES: Played 6, Won 3 and 3 ended in a draw. Goals from all the forwards and fantastic saves from Elaini. Apples Tournament player: Elaini for fabulous goalkeeping. Apples report: The girls played beautifully and their passing was synchronised perfectly creating many chances and causing all the teams difficulties. The girls were not intimidated by any of their opponents and at times outplayed them. The girls played consistently and used all their training that they had absorbed throughout the season. The skilful play shown by the Apples did not reflect the score with 3 games ending in a draw, however, the won 3. Unfortunately the final tally on the scoreboard fell short of the qualifier but the girls should be proud that they did not loose any of their matches. Particular acknowledgement to Elaini in goal as she progressed through the tournament maintaining a clean sheet (costing the coach an Easter Egg!). In addition to this she shared responsibility for being in goal for Canterbury Panthers as their goalie was poorly.

MARDEN PEARS: Played 6; Lost 3 and won 3, goals from Lucy, Darcy and Helena Pears Tournament Player: Mathilda Featherstone Pears report: As each match progressed the girls began to gel as a team so play opened up. Mathilda stepped up in goal in the absence of Sophie, who was devastated to miss out on the tournament (having broken her leg on Thursday). Alice was solid in defence and could be relied on to make a strong pass up the pitch, with the support of Lauren and Heidi, on rotation. Our mid-fielders, Holly, Naomi and particularly Darcy clocked up some miles from one D to the next D, giving the forward's opportunities to score. Lucy, Harriet and Helena worked well with the mid's passing the ball wide and communicating with each other. Very proud of the girls. U12 GIRLS REPORT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Russets Rollercoaster Marden entered 2 teams into the U12 Girls Kent Championships on Sunday. Hosted at Tonbridge School Marden B were drawn in a tough group of 5. After a spirited opening game defeat against Tunbridge Wells A ( finalists ) they responded with resolute defending to win 2 games and draw one to go through to the next round. In the quarter finals they beat Gillingham after a tense penalty shoot out with Sophie saving the 6th attempt to send Russets through after Millie Heather and Scarlett scored. The next match sadly saw them knocked out in a tight game against Canterbury B. The 10 girl squad should be very proud with Heather and a Millie a threat upfront supported by great defence from all. Sophie Ford and Audrey were a wall at times. Marden A started their 4 team group with a hard fought win against Holcombe 1-0. Marden had most of the ball but the attack were blunted by a stubborn defence. A similar game followed against Blackheath with a last minute goal for Marden to win 1-0 which was their 10th attempt on goal. The 2 victories came from determined play with Florence and Caitlin controlling the midfield. Florence repeatedly drove down the right to put in dangerous crosses that the strikers could not quite convert. However the final group game saw a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Brombeck meaning a tougher quarter final draw awaited. Marden were the better side but a single counter attack cost the girls plus some rare indecision in the attacking D. The quarter final was against Sevenoaks A the eventual winners and despite a huge effort it resulted in a 3/0 defeat. Sevenoaks were impressive but Grace / Annie / Jemma and Izzy kept Marden in the game until the last few minutes. Marden A entered the plate on results and played Burnt Ash in the next round. The smiles returned to the faces of the girls and the massed ranks of loud Marden fans who are the new Ultras or Barmy Army equivalent.

A superb 4-0 victory was comfortable with the attack now firing. Emily Katie and Olivia were unstoppable. The final match v Sevenoaks B was for the plate trophy. Wow what a game which Marden could have won but 0-0 meant a 5 turn penalty scramble. At 3-1 down with 2 to go all was lost..., except we had Gracie! 3 saves in a row and goals from Caitlin and a coolest finish of the day from Tabby on the reverse stick resulted in a win closely followed by a pitch invasion. The coach Clive was seen being tossed into the air by excitable mums and players. A great way to finish and whilst not the silverware we initially hoped a trophy was secured which is reward for a great season, excellent coaching and hard work from the girls. The league continues for 2 more games and a chance of further silverware awaits!
