Lady Rams Close Out Regular Season with 61-53 Win at Fayetteville State WSSU duo records double-doubles in regular season finale Feb. 25, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (16-10, 11-6 CIAA) ended regular season play with an important 61-53 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win over the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State (6-19, 4-12 CIAA), Thursday evening. After a slow start to the game, the Lady Rams got into an efficient flow and remained in control of the game to pick up the big win. It was very important win, definitely coming off of the two losses, WSSU head women s basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. said. It was important for us to get this win going into the tournament. As a team, the Lady Rams shot just 31% from the floor, but turned up their defensive efforts, holding the Lady Broncos to shooting only 28% on their home floor. The Lady Rams were especially dominant on the boards as the team finished the game with a 56-37 advantage over the Lady Broncos. The Lady Rams also scored 17 points off of 19 Lady Bronco turnovers. Senior forward Vontisha Woods and sophomore guard Jasmine Newkirk had huge performances for the Lady Rams as they both recorded double-doubles to lead the team to the victory. Woods led the way with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Newkirk contributed for her first double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Taneisha White was also a big factor as she came off the bench for the Lady Rams and scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds. With Vontisha Woods being an All-CIAA selection, she is showing that she is that caliber of player, Joyner Jr. added. I think that since [Jasmine] Newkirk did not get recognition, her goals are now to get us to the championship game and personally, make that all-tournament team. The Lady Rams also benefitted from great efforts by junior guard Porsche Harrell and senior forward Georgette Allen, who both came off the bench for some great minutes for the Lady Rams. I was very pleased by the efforts of Taneisha [White], Porsche [Harrell] and Georgette [Allen] because without them, we don t win that game, Joyner, Jr. added. Points were hard to come by early as both teams combined for only scored six points in the first five minutes of play when the Lady Rams jumped out to a 4-2 lead. Over the next seven minutes, the Lady Rams outscored the Lady Broncos 7-3 taking an 11-5 lead with 8:36 left in the first half. The Lady Rams faced their first challenge of the game at the 7:03 mark when the Lady Broncos took their first lead of the half, 15-14, after going on a 9-4 run. Senior guard Rene Rector hit a key free throw to tie the game, 15-15 with 5:54 left in the half. Afterwards, Newkirk hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Rams an 18-15 lead at 4:43, but the Lady Broncos answered Newkirk s three-pointer on their next possession with one of their own to once again tie the game once again, 18-18. The Lady Rams responded to the Lady Broncos challenge by taking full control of the game, and taking a nine-point lead and holding to head into the locker room ahead, 28-19. Being the reigning CIAA champions, they [Fayetteville State] know what this time of year is about and they definitely gave us a hard-fought game, WSSU women s basketball head coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. said. But I was very pleased by the effort in the second half when the game got close. We didn t panic, we just went back to the basics and executed offensively and defensively. The second half turned to be a challenge for both teams as strong runs at both ends of the court left the Lady Rams working hard to secure their win. The Lady Broncos struck first in the second half, cutting the Lady Rams down to four points, 28-24, after two minutes of play, but the Lady Rams answered with a 7-2 run and jumped ahead 35-26 with 14:12 to play. The Lady Rams were challenged once again at the 11:21 mark when the WSSU lead was cut to just one point, 39-38, after being outscored 12-4 over a three-minute stretch. The Lady Rams found themselves trailing for the first time in the second half when the Lady Broncos took their first lead of the second half, 42-41, with 9:55 left in the game. Woods scored four of the next six points to shift the lead back to the Lady Rams, 46-45, with 6:17 to play. Though challenged down the stretch, the Lady Rams made all the big plays that they needed to seal the 61-53 victory. At the start of the game we said that our CIAA tournament was a five-game tournament and it started tonight. So we started the game with a win-or-go-home approach and we survived the first round of it tonight, Joyner, Jr. said following the win. Now, we are on to Charlotte and not it s time to turn our focus to winning Monday and moving on. With the regular season at its end, the Lady Rams will spend the next couple days in preparation for the CIAA Tournament where the team is likely to take the third seed in the CIAA Southern Division. However, results from other games this week will determine seedings.
