Memphis extended its school-record winning streak to 12 games, and improved to 2-0 in The American in the process, with a 24-17 win at USF Friday night in Tampa. QB Paxton Lynch was 20-of-33 for 305 yards and two passing touchdowns, while he added a rushing touchdown to help Memphis get to 5-0 this season. It was Memphis third straight victory in which the Tigers overcame a halftime deficit, and it set the stage for what should be a big nonconference matchup against Mississippi in two weeks. USF fell to 1-3 overall and dropped its conference opener. RB Marlon Mack rushed for 107 yards on 20 carries for the Bulls, who led a 10-0 first-half lead get away. Houston remained unbeaten at 4-0 overall as the Cougars won their conference opener with a 38-24 decision at Tulsa Saturday. Houston QB Greg Ward Jr. was once again the story as he rushed for 182 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 273 yards, completing 22 of 38 attempts. Tulsa QB Dane Evans threw for 326 yards, but the Golden Hurricane fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in The American. Navy improved to 4-0 and took the first step toward reclaiming the Commander-In-Chief s Trophy as the Midshipmen handled Air Force, 33-11, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. QB Keenan Reynolds rushed for 183 yards on 24 attempts and threw for 117 yards and a touchdown for the Midshipmen, who have won their last eight games. The Navy-Air Force winner has gone on to win the Commander-In- Chief s Trophy in each of the last 18 seasons. Temple completed a string of three straight road games and remained unbeaten in 2015 as the Owls were 37-3 winners at Charlotte Friday. The Owls pulled away in rainy conditions thanks to RB Jahad Thomas, who rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. QB P.J. Walker and WR Robbby Anderson connected for a pair of touchdown passes as Temple improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1974. East Carolina got a spark off the bench from QB James Summers for the second straight week as the Pirates rallied for a 49-23 win at SMU. The Pirates trailed 23-7 in the second quarter when Summers took over and engineered six scoring drives on East Carolina s final nine possessions. Summers completed 9 of 10 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 85 yards and two TDs on nine carries. LB Montese Overton set an American Athletic Conference record with four sacks. SMU dropped its third straight despite a 249-yard, two-touchdown effort from QB Matt Davis. Tulane has won two straight as the Green Wave opened conference play with a 45-31 win against UCF at Yulman Stadium. QB Tanner Lee threw a career-high four touchdown passes, while the Green Wave forced five UCF turnovers and registered seven sacks. DE Royce LaFrance led the defensive effort with three sacks for Tulane, which is 2-2 overall. UCF, which continued to fall victim to injuries, saw WR D Erren Wilson finish with seven receptions for 114 yards and an American Athletic Conference-record-tying three touchdowns. Cincinnati scored an impressive nonconference win as the Bearcats took a 34-23 decision against Miami (Fla.) Thursday in front of a record crowd at Nippert Stadium. QB Hayden Moore threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns, adding a rushing TD as well, in his first career start. LB Eric Wilson finished with a game-high 14 tackles for the Bearcats, who improved to 3-2. UConn held a 10-7 lead late in the third quarter against Brigham Young, but the Cougars scored 23 points in the final 18:02 to rally for a 30-13 victory in Provo, Utah.

AMERICAN NOTEBOOK Streaking Memphis extended its winning streak to a schoolrecord 12 games with its win against USF Thursday. The only teams with longer active winning streaks are Ohio State, which has won 18 straight, and TCU, which has won 13 in a row.. Navy has won its last eight games, which ranks as the fifth-longest active streak. Perfection The American has four unbeaten teams (Memphis is 5-0, Temple, Navy and Houston are 4-0). The only other conferences with four undefeated teams are the Big Ten and Big 12. Road Warriors Temple and Memphis are two of the teams in the nation that have gone 3-0 in true road games this season (Bowling Green). That s Offensive Seven of the 12 American Athletic Conference teams have averaged at least 400 yards of total offense through five weeks of the season. Houston averages 602.5 yards per game, while Cincinnati, Tulsa and Memphis all average at least 500 yards per game. Moving The Chains East Carolina has converted 55 percent of its third-down situations. The Pirates lead the nation in third-down conversion percentage, while Navy is fourth nationally (53.8 percent). Security Instruments Navy has committed just one turnover this season. USF has lost just one fumble. Navy and Memphis are among the five teams nationally that have not thrown an interception in 2015. The Owls drew 69,176 at Lincoln Financial Field for their win against Penn State, while the Bearcats had an on-campus record 39,095 on hand at the newly renovated Nippert Stadium for their win against Alabama A&M before surpassing that number with 40,101 in attendance against Miami (Fla.). Memphis and East Carolina have both played in front of home crowds of at least 45,000 this season as well. Veteran Presence Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, who is in his eighth year as the Midshipmen s head coach, has more head coaching experience than the other five West Division coaches combined (six years). Show Me Moore Cincinnati QB Hayden Moore came off the bench to throw for an American Athletic Conference-record 557 yards in the Bearcats loss to Memphis Sept. 24. Moore completed 31 of 53 passes with four touchdowns and two interceptions against the Tigers. Lynch Mob Memphis QB Paxton Lynch has completed 70.5 percent of his passes (103 of 146) with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions in 2015. To Be The Best American Athletic Conference teams play 11 games against teams ranked in the presason top 25 polls. The American s nonconference slate includes games against preseason No. 2 TCU, No. 4 Baylor, No. 10 Florida State, No. 11 Notre Dame, No. 16 Georgia Tech, No. 17 Mississippi, No. 19 Oklahoma, No. 21 Stanford and No. 24 Missouri. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship will be played Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at noon ET and will be televised nationally on either ABC or ESPN. The 2015 season will be The American s first in its new 12-team, two-division format, in which each team will play eight conference games. Each team will face the other five teams in its own division as well as three teams from the other division. The American s East Division includes UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, USF and Temple. The West Division lineup is Houston, Memphis, Navy, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa. The two divisional champions will meet in The American Championship at the home site of one of the participants. The winner of the American Athletic Conference Football Championship will have the opportunity to participate in one of the College Football Playoff New Year s Bowls if it is the highest-ranked team among the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference. Divisional Champions The divisional champions will be the teams from each division with the highest winning percentage in all conference games both divisional and non-divisional. In the event of a two-team tie within a division, the head-to-head result between the tied teams will determine the divisional champion. Championship Site The site of the American Athletic Conference Football Championship will be the home venue of the divisional champion with the best record in conference games. If the two divisional champions have the same conference record, then the regular-season headto-head winner between the divisional champions would host the championship. UConn resumes conference play against UCF. UConn was the first American Athletic Conference team to win a league game against the Knights as the Huskies took last year s meeting. The loss to Memphis ended a streak of two straight wins in conference openers for USF. The Bulls started eight drives within their own 15-yard line against Memphis. TE Sean Price has 61 career receptions, the most by a tight end in school history. Tulsa had 456 yards of total offense against Houston a season low for the Golden Hurricane, but more than Tulsa had in nine of its 12 games last year. COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF The College Football Playoff is a big success. Fans, including many who are new to the sport, enjoy it. The first College Football Playoff semifinals and national championship were the three most-viewed programs in cable television history. Every Game Counts The playoff preserves the excitement and significance of college football s unique regular season where every game counts. Four Teams The selection committee ranks the teams based on championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparative outcomes of common opponents and other factors. Two Days New Year s Eve and New Year s Day belong to college football, with two semifinal games and four other top bowl games continuing a wonderful tradition. The two teams winning the playoff semifinals compete for the College Football Playoff National Championship. That game is in a different city each year, always on a Monday night. Universal Access Every FBS team has equal access to the College Football Playoff based on its performance. No team automatically qualifies. Governance University presidents and chancellors from all 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame serve on the CFP Board of Managers and govern the administrative operations, with commissioners (the Management Committee) managing the event. A small staff in the playoff office in Irving, Texas, carries out the detailed responsibilities. Selection Committee A talented group of high-integrity individuals with experience as coaches, student-athletes, college administrators and journalists, along with sitting athletics directors, comprise the selection committee. Participants In New Year s Bowls Both participants in the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowls are contracted outside the playoff arrange ment (Big Ten and Pac- 12 to Rose Bowl; SEC and Big 12 to Sugar Bowl; ACC to Orange Bowl against the highest ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten and Notre Dame). If a conference champion qualifies for the playoff, then the bowl will choose a replacement from that conference. When those bowls host the semifinals and their contracted conference champions do not qualify, then the dis placed champion(s) will play in one of the other New Year s bowls. When not hosting semifinals, the Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowls will welcome displaced conference champions and the topranked champion from a non-contract conference. BOWL PARTNERSHIPS In addition to the College Football Playoff and New Year s Bowls, The American will have either a primary or secondary affiliation with 12 bowl games during its current six-year bowl cycle. The American works annually with its member schools and bowl partners to create the most sensible and attractive postseason matchups. The Miami Beach Bowl was played for the first time in 2014 at state-of-the-art Marlins Park in Miami, which sits on the site of the historic Orange Bowl stadium. An American Athletic Conference plays in the bowl each year, beginning with last year s matchup against Brigham Young. Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference and the Sun Belt Conference are scheduled for future years, though institutions from other conferences also will have the opportunity to participate. The Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman takes place at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland, while the events and activities surrounding the game are based in Washington, D.C. The American Athletic Conference will face an opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference each year in the current cycle. The Birmingham Bowl takes place at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The American/Big East has partnered with the bowl since its inception in the 2006 season. The American Athletic Conference will annually face an opponent from the Southeastern Conference. The St. Petersburg Bowl is played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The American Athletic Conference will supply a team to the bowl during each year of the six-year cycle. Conference USA will play in the game in 2015, 2017 and 2019, while the Atlantic Coast Conference provides the opposing team in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The Hawaii Bowl is played on Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium on the campus of the University of Hawaii. The American Athletic Conference will participate in the bowl in 2015, 2017 and 2019, facing an opponent from the Mountain West Conference. The Boca Raton Bowl is a new game that will feature an American Athletic Conference team three times during the six-year cycle at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida. The American representative will play a team from the Mid-American Conference in 2015. The AutoNation Cure Bowl will debut in 2015 at the newly renovated Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. An American Athletic Conference team will be paired against an opponent from the Sun Belt Conference. Net proceeds from the game will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl is played at Amon G. Carter Stadium on the campus of Texas Christian University. The American Athletic Conference sends a team to the bowl in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The opponent will be a Big 12 team in 2016 and 2018, with Conference USA as a secondary affiliation. The Popeye s Bahamas Bowl is played in at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas. The American Athletic Conference will face the Mid-American Conference in 2016 and Conference USA in 2018. The R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl is held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The American Athletic Conference has agreed to play in the bowl in 2018 and 2019. THE AMERICAN ON TELEVISION The 2015 football season will be the second under the American Athletic Conference s comprehensive television partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports. The new arrangements began with the 2013-14 basketball season and will be in place through the 2019-20 academic year. The contracts provide for unprecedented exposure on two of the industry leaders in sports television. In football, the contract calls for all conference-controlled games which encompasses all conference games and home nonconference games to be televised. Nearly 90 percent of those games will be carried on either national broadcast or national cable platforms. In addition to contracted games on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNews, American Athletic Conference teams will regularly appear on CBS Sports Network through a sublicensing agreement with ESPN. Additional nonconference games will be available on ESPN3 ESPN s live multi-screen sports network, giving fans an online destination that delivers thousands of global sports events annually. Weekly Awards The American names offensive, defensive and special teams Players of the Week each Monday morning during the season. Annual Awards The American Athletic Conference will name first and second all-conference teams, players of the year on offense, defense and special teams, rookie of the year and coach of the year. The awards are chosen by a vote of the league s 12 head coaches at the conclusion of the regular season. The awards will be announced Dec. 2, 2015. The American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team is comprised of players who have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 or better over the previous academic year and completed at least two semesters of academic work. The team is announced in August. The American Athletic Conference Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year was established to recognize student-athletes who have achieved success in the classroom and on the field.
