HEAD COACH RITCHIE McKAY Ritchie McKay was named Liberty s seventh men s basketball head coach on March 26, 2007. Liberty marks McKay s fifth head coaching stint, and his first east of the Mississippi, after stops in the Big Sky, Mountain West, Pac-10 and WAC conferences. McKay, 42, came to Liberty from New Mexico, where he spent five seasons at the helm of the Lobos basketball program (2003-07), highlighted by a Mountain West Conference (MWC) championship in 2005. With a 26-7 record, the conference championship earned New Mexico its first NCAA Tournament appearance in six years and the program s first conference title since 1996. Overall at New Mexico, McKay sported an 82-69 coaching record over five seasons, including the 2005 campaign, where the team s 26 victories were the second-highest total in program s 103-year history. McKay posted a 37-23 record (.627) at Colorado State, which included a 1999 National Invitational Tournament (NIT) berth. The Rams defeated Mississippi State and in-state rival Colorado at the event, before losing to eventual NIT Tournament champion California. The 1999-2000 season featured the first year of play for CSU in the Mountain West Conference, and the Rams logged an 18-12 record and a fourth-place conference finish. A pair of victories over nationally-ranked opponents - the first time the program had accomplished the feat at Colorado State in a decade - and capturing the title at the second annual Pearl Harbor Classic in Hawaii were some of the highlights during the season. College Hoops Insider magazine noticed the success of the 2000 Rams and tabbed McKay as its MWC Coach of the Year. Before arriving on the Colorado State campus, McKay began his head coaching career when he was named the head coach at Portland State. McKay started with the Vikings in 1995, helping revive a program which had been dormant for 15 years. McKay led the program to nine victories in the school's first season of competition (1996-97) since the early 1980s. After the initial season at Portland State, McKay was named one of six finalists for the Clair Bee Award, given annually to the coach with the most influence and innovation in the game of basketball. Two other finalists for the honor that year were Dean Smith of North Carolina and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke. The 1997-98 Portland State team followed with a 15-12 mark and a third-place finish in the Big Sky Conference. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. Thursday s contest will be televised on ESPNU with Bob Wischusen providing play-by-play, Mike Kelley adding color commentary and Melissa Knowles patrolling the sidelines. There will be a radio broadcast that will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL 88.3 FM) with Jerry Edwards providing play-by-play. Additionally, an Internet audio broadcast on LibertyFlames.com will be available. Liberty Update Anthony Smith tallied a career-high 30 points and TeeJay Bannister dished out a Big South Championship record 14 assists as the Flames avenged last season s quarterfinal exist, by beating the team that eliminated them, the VMI Keydets. The Flames won by 14 points, 103-88. On Saturday the Flames secured home court advantage in the first round of the Advance Auto Parts Big South Championship with a 78-71 triumph against arch-rival Radford. Anthony Smith led all scorers with 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting. B.J. Jenkins added 18 in the win. The victory over the Highlanders broke a three-game losing streak. It marked the first time all season since the opening three games that the Flames had dropped three games in a row. The most recent setback was an 81-79 defeat against VMI on Feb. 26. Smith led Liberty with 23 points. The second setback in the recent losing streak was a 79-68 defeat at nonconference foe Longwood on Feb. 22. That evening Bobby Knight secured career win No. 880, passing Dean Smith, as the all-time winningest coach in Division I men s college basketball. McKay s New Mexico squad dropped the contest in Lubbock, Texas, 70-68. Anthony Smith Sets Record Anthony Smith set a Big South single-game record shooting 87.5 percent from three-point range versus Longwood (7-of-8) on Nov. 27. The conference record is based on a minimum seven three-point field goals made. The game serves as the sixth-best individual performance in the nation this season. Matching a Record Anthony Smith tied a Vines Center record with his seven three-point field goals against Longwood on Nov. 27. Smith matched former teammate Larry Blair, who set the mark when he made seven treys against High Point on March 6, 2004. Non-Conference Wins Liberty entered Big South play with eight wins, the most since the 1999-2000 team collected 10 non-conference victories. Liberty entered Big South play with a winning record (8-7) for the first time since the 2001 team took a 7-5 record into league play. Jeremy Anderson Tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week Liberty guard Jeremy Anderson was selected as the Big South Conference New Balance Men s Basketball Freshman of the Week, for games played from Jan. 28-Feb. 3, as announced by the league office. Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.) averaged 17.0 points while shooting 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the floor and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from three-point range for the week. He tallied a career-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 6-of-8 from behind the three-point arc, aiding the Flames to a six-point win at VMI on Jan. 28, 87-81. At Radford on Feb. 2, Anderson scored 14 points, all coming in the second half, to keep Liberty within striking distance of the Highlanders before falling by one point, 89-88. Anderson also was 3- of-3 from the line and grabbed two rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench against the Highlanders. Anderson is the first Liberty freshman to earn Big South Freshman of the Week honors since B.J. Jenkins earned the award on Dec. 4, 2006. Anderson also became the 13th different freshman from Liberty to earn the honor since the Big South started the award during the 1991 season.

Anthony Smith Chosen to Honor a Visionary Junior Anthony Smith was one of 10 student-athletes who served as an honorary pallbearer for the late Liberty University Founder and Chancellor, Dr. Jerry Falwell. Ten Liberty University student-athletes served as honorable pallbearers at the May 22 funeral, reflecting on Dr. Falwell s love for athletics. Shooting 60 Percent or Higher Liberty shot 61.7 percent (29-of-47) from the floor on Dec. 1 against Niagara. This was the first time Liberty has reached the 60-percent mark since Feb. 21, 2007 at VMI (64.4). The Flames reached 60 percent shooting in three games last year. This season, the team reached the number during its eighth game, as compared to last year when the team first hit the 60-percent mark in game No. 21. Alex McLean Grabbing the Boards Senior Alex McLean grabbed 8.8 rebounds per game last season. The figure was the best rebounding season by a Flame since Jason Dixon grabbed 9.0 caroms per contest during the 1995 campaign. McLean s rebounding numbers are roughly the same this season, as he averages 9.0 rebounds per game this year. What a Difference a Year Makes A new coach means a new role for walk-on Kyle Ohman. Saturday will mark the 32nd game of the season and could account for the 32nd contest Ohman appears in this year. Ohman appeared in only 10 contests all of last season. B.J. Jenkins Production Goes Up with Minutes B.J. Jenkins has increased his playing time by 17.4 minutes per game since his freshman season last year. Production is up all around for Jenkins, who is enjoying an average 5.3 point increase in his scoring average. Jenkins is pulling down 2.8 more rebounds this season and dishing out 1.3 more assists. Jeremy Anderson Makes Debut Freshman Jeremy Anderson appeared in his first contest for the Flames this season on Dec. 15 at Campbell after battling an injury to his right foot. Anderson scored six points on 2-of-4 shooting, while playing 15 minutes. The last time the Flames started a season playing five of six games outside of Lynchburg was the 2001-02 season.that season, the Flames played at Vanderbilt, Appalachian State and at the Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Classic. Liberty went 1-5 during that span, on its way to a 5-25 season.

McKay s Milestone Outside his 19 wins at Colorado State in 1999, Ritchie McKay s 16 victories this season are the most in the first year of a tenure at any program he has headed up. McKay had nine victories in 1997 at Portland State when the program was first added after a 15-year hiatus. His Oregon State team in 2001 and his New Mexico team in 2003 each won 10 games the first season McKay was on campus. Liberty Drops First Game at Home Liberty was 11-0 at home this season before falling to Winthrop on Feb. 12. The Flames finished 7-0 in non-conference contests. With no remaining home non-conference games this year, the Flames went undefeated in home non-conference games for the first time since the 1995-96 season. That season, Liberty went 4-0 at home during the non-conference portion of its schedule. Since moving to the NCAA Division I level, Liberty had never gone undefeated at home during a non-conference slate when playing more than four non-conference contests, prior to this season. TeeJay Bannister Lending an Assist TeeJay Bannister is dishing out 7.3 assists per game this year, which is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. The average is the highest by a Flame since Kenny Gunn registered 6.5 helpers during the 1983-84 campaign. Bannister wasn t born until the June following that season. Currently Bannister s assist average is the highest of any senior in program history, topping Karl Hess and his 5.5 apg average in 1980, from the top spot. Road Woes The Flames have lost 36 of their last 42 road games, dating back to the start of the 2005-06 season. Three of the wins during that span came last season. A 66-63 victory at Charleston Southern on Jan. 22, a 118-108 victory at VMI on Feb. 21 and a 64-48 win at Radford on Feb. 24. The victory in Lexington was the Flames first since Dec. 7, 1991, and the win at Radford was Liberty s first since Feb. 22, 1997. The fourth road win was a 55-53 triumph at East Carolina on Nov. 17, the fifth road win was on Jan. 28 at VMI, 87-81 and the sixth was a 65-51 triumph at Coastal Carolina on Feb. 16. TeeJay Bannister Dropping Dimes TeeJay Bannister has dished out 146 assists over his past 18 games as compared to 59 turnovers. Over the 18-game stretch, he is averaging 8.1 assists versus 3.3 turnovers per game. Five Records Matched or Broke Against Kentucky Christian Liberty matched or broke five records versus Kentucky Christian on Jan. 8. TeeJay Bannister broke Beau Wallace s Vines Center single-game record (12) for assists with 13, before breaking his own record on Jan. 21 against Coastal Carolina with 15 assists. Alex McLean matched his Vines Center record for rebounds (17), which he set against Lipscomb last season. Liberty limited KCU to 15 second-half points, a Vines Center record for lowest output by an opponent in a half, breaking Averett s (16) mark in a December 1993 contest. Liberty pulled down 59 rebounds, matching a Vines Center single-game record established against Averett in 1992. Liberty also broke a Vines Center single-game record for defensive rebounds with 42, breaking the previous mark (37) set against Radford in 2002.

McKay Inks Highly Anticipated Recruiting Class In his first recruiting class at Liberty, head men s basketball coach Ritchie McKay and staff have signed Seth Curry, Brolin Floyd, Sammy Jackson, Mike Lewis, Carter McMasters and Austin Smith to national letters of intent for the 2008-09 academic year. I can t remember ever having a class like the one we were able to attract our first year at Liberty, said McKay, who has been a head coach in the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and Big Sky Conferences. Typically it takes a little bit of time to establish yourself in an unfamiliar region of the country, added McKay. What Liberty University offers a student-athlete is really reflected in the caliber of the individual and the caliber of the player we were able to sign. Curry is the son of one of the NBA s most prolific three-point shooters, Dell Curry. A 6-0 combo guard from Charlotte, N.C., Curry has been a huge piece to Charlotte Christian s success over the past few years. As a junior, Curry averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game for a team that had four starters in double figures in scoring. Last season, Curry shot 50 percent from the field, earning CISAA all-conference honors. In his three years on the varsity squad, Charlotte Christian has amassed an 83-15 record, reaching the state final in 2006. Floyd hails from Ocala, Fla., and plays for Shores Christian School. As a junior, the 6-5, 210- pound guard, averaged 17.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.2 steals, leading Shores Christian to the NACA National Championship game. Jackson is a 6-5 forward out of Jacksonville Junior College in Jacksonville, Texas. The Arlington, Texas native is currently playing his second year of junior college ball, after prepping at Bowie High School. Lewis signs with the Flames out of Charis Prep in Goldsboro, N.C., the same prep school where Liberty s Armon Jones spent the 2006 season. Lewis, a 5-7 guard from Upper Marlboro, Md., was a four-year starter at Suitland, averaging 18.4 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game as a senior. Lewis led Suitland to a 22-5 record as a senior, falling in the regional championship game to Eleanor Roosevelt, 55-53. McMasters hails from Chattanooga, Tenn., where he will be a 2008 graduate of Grace Academy. The 6-11 forward averaged 14.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game as a junior at Grace, helping his team to the regional finals. The all-state honoree alters the game, evident by his 20 shots redirected last season. Smith, a 6-9 forward from Tucson, Ariz., transferred to Ironwood Ridge from Mountain View. While at Mountain View as junior, Smith averaged 11.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Basketball Times Rates Liberty s Recruiting Class as No. 48 in the Nation Basketball Times, a publication covering collegiate basketball for over 25 years, ranked Liberty s 2008 recruiting class at No. 48 in its most recent issue. Basketball Times ranked its Top 50, and Liberty joined No. 26 Xavier, No. 31 Rhode Island, No. 36 Fresno State, No. 36 New Mexico, No. 36 St. Louis, No. 41 Dayton, No. 50 Hofstra and No. 50 Gonzaga as the only schools that are not a part of a BCS conference.
