QUICK HITS Riding a six-game winning streak and a 4-0 start in Big Sky Conference action, the Weber State Wildcats are back home Thursday night. The Wildcats will take on Montana State Thursday. Weber State is 12-3 overall and 4-0 in Big Sky action, following an 88-81 victory at Portland State last week. Montana State enters the game at 7-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Weber State junior Damian Lillard, the nation s leading scorer, was named the National Player of the Week after his performance last week. He continues to move up the WSU career record lists. Weber State holds a 72-35 all-time series lead over Montana State and the Wildcats have won seven of the last ten in the series. MORE ON THURSDAY S GAME The Wildcats and Bobcats will tipoff at 7:00 p.m. at the Dee Events Center this Thursday night. As always, the game will be broadcast live on KZNS-1280 AM The Zone with the voice of the Wildcats Carl Arky providing the play-by-play. Dutch Belnap will provide color commentary. WILDCATS MOVE TO 4-0 IN LEAGUE PLAY Weber State moved to 4-0 in Big Sky play for the first time since 2003 following an 88-81 come from behind victory at Portland State Saturday night. The Cats trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half but rallied to cut the halftime lead to seven before pulling the game out in the second half. Weber State shot 53 percent from the field in the victory. LILLARD NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK The honors continue to pour in for Weber State junior guard Damian Lillard. Lillard was named the Big Sky Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and was honored as the National Player of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Lillard averaged 34 points, six rebounds, five assists, and one block per game in WSU s two wins last week. He shot 47.5 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from 3-point range, and 94.7 percent from the free-throw line. He scored 30 points with seven rebound, five assists and a blocked shot in Weber State s 79-71 win over Eastern Washington on Thursday. He was 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. During the game, he scored his 1,500th career point. Lillard followed with 38 points, five assists, five rebounds, one block and one steal in an 88-81 victory over Eastern Washington. Lillard scored 23 points in the first half, including a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to cut Portland State s lead to 51-44. Lillard made a career-high eight 3-pointers in the game and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. He continues leads the nation in scoring with an average of 26.3 points per game. On the season he also ranks fourth in the nation in three-point field goals per game and is 12th in three-point field goal percentage and 14th in free throw percentage. He currently ranks sixth in Weber State career scoring with 1,545 career points. He needs nine more points to move pass Jimmie Watts for fifth all-time and 19 more to pass Willie Sojourner for fourth all-time. Lillard is also second in WSU career three-pointers made. Head Coach Randy Rahe LILLARD A FINALIST FOR BOB COUSY AWARD Damian Lillard has also been named as one of 20 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, which recognizes the top point guard in college basketball. The Cousy award is sponsored by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The current listing of 20 finalists will be narrowed down to 10 players in early February and then down five players by early March. The final five players in contention for the award will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame s selection committee. The winner of the will be awarded at the Hall of Fame s Class Announcement on Monday April 2nd in New Orleans as part of NCAA Final Four weekend. Bamforth finished the night 5-11 from the field and was 9-10 from the free throw line. Lillard and Bamforth combined for 59 of WSU s 88 points in the victory. On the season he has scored in double figures in 13 of WSU s 15 games and has now scored 20 or more points three times. He ranks fifth in the Big Sky in scoring at 15.7 points per game and is second in the league and 25th in the nation in free throw percentage at 88.9 percent. 4-0 BIG SKY START BEST IN NINE YEARS The 4-0 start in Big Sky Conference play is the best start for the Wildcats since they finished 14-0 during the 2002-03 season. WILDCATS CONTINUE GREAT FREE THROW SHOOTING The Wildcats finished 20-25 from the free throw line in Saturday s win at Portland State. On the season Weber State is shooting 80.6 percent from the line, which ranks as the third best in the country. The Cats have shot 80 percent or better from the free throw line in ten of 15 games this season. Individually, Damian Lillard leads the Big Sky and is 14th in the country at 90.9 percent and Scott Bamforth is 25th in the nation at 88.9 percent. CATS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS As a team the Wildcats ranks in the top 20 in the nation in five categories. WSU is second in the nation in three-point field goals made per game, averaging 9.7 per game. The Cats are also third in the country in free throw percentage (80.6), and ranks seventh in three-point percentage at 42 percent. WSU is also 13th in the country in turnovers per game at 11.1 and is 16th in scoring offense at 80.1 per game. In addition to leading the country in scoring Damian Lillard is also fourth in the nation in three-point field goals per game (3.7) and is 12th in 3-point percentage (47.4). CATS GOOD IN CLOSE GAMES The Wildcats improved to 6-0 this season in games decided by ten points or less. The Cats are 6-3 in games decided by 11 or more points. In addition, WSU is 10-1 when leading at halftime this season and is 11-0 when leading with 5:00 to play in regulation. WSU improved to 7-0 when scoring 80 or more points in a game. SEASON TRENDS The Wildcats are 11-0 when leading their opponent in field goal percentage; 1-3 when trailing. They are also 9-1 when leading in three-point percentage, 12-1 when leading in field goal percentage, and 9-0 when leading in rebounding. HOME COURT SUCCESS The Wildcats are 8-0 at home this season, which is their best home start since the 2002-03 season when they finished 13-0 at home. INJURY REPORT Weber State continues to suffer injury problems. Senior Kyle Bulllinger dislocated his right elbow Dec. 3 against San Jose State. Junior Frank Otis suffered a knee injury Dec. 7 at BYU. In Saturday s win at Portland State sophomore center James Hajek suffered a knee injury. WSU is still determining how long Hajek will be out of action. Both Bullinger and Otis are questionable to return to action for this week s home games. ABOUT MONTANA STATE Montana State enters Thursday s game with a 7-7 overall record and a 2-1 mark in Big Sky Conference games. The Bobcats are coming off a 73-69 win at Idaho State last Thursday. MSU s non-conference wins include victories over Northern New Mexico, Utah, and San Jose State, three teams Weber State also defeated. MSU ranks third in the Big Sky in scoring at 73.6 points per game. They are also third in the league in rebounding and fourth in three-point field goal percentage. They lead the conference in steals at 7.8 per game and are second in blocks. Individually the Bobcats are led by junior Xavier Blount who is averaging 11.7 points per game. Junior Christian Moon is next at 11.6 points per game but is scoring 19.7 points per game in their three Big Sky games. Huse enters this week with a 65-80 overall record at Montana State and is 40-43 in Big Sky games. He spent eight seasons as head coach at Jamestown before coming to Montana State. SERIES HISTORY Weber State holds a 72-35 all-time series lead over Montana State and the Wildcats have won seven of the last ten games in the series. In games played in Ogden the Wildcats hold a 46-7 series edge but are just 2-2 in the last four games at the Dee Events Center. LAST SEASON AGAINST THE BOBCATS Weber State and Montana State split two games last season with each team winning at home. The Wildcats opened the Big Sky season last year and lost 75-72 in Bozeman.
