Soundings Newsletter of South Port Sailing Club May 2018 Message from Commodore Ryan Masse It s finally May and with it comes the start of our season. By the time of this release, it should be well known that we ve delayed launch till the 5th in hopes of giving everyone enough time to finish up last minute preparations for the season. I hope the weather continues o hold off so we can enjoy a safe and successful launch. Once the boats splash in the water it won t be long before our race season kicks off. Another great way to ease into the season is to join in our cruise to the Sandbar on the 26th. It won t be long after we re all getting together for Sail A Bration. Mexican Themed Happy Hour Friday May 4th Burrito Bar & Mexican treats! $5.00 per person After 5:00 pm Launch May 5th There have been a number of projects on the go that have demanded a lot of attention of the executive the past few months. If you have been out working on your boat, you may have noticed the following: 1. To alleviate the immediate pressure of our harbour being full, we have moved the poles on F dock inward and resurfaced the finger dock in hopes of repurposing the area for shallow draft boats such as Sharks and Tanzer 22 s. This frees up wells in our harbour while utilizing an area considered lost, as it was configured to house our largest and deepest draft boats. 2. In the fall it was brought to our attention that the small boat hoist needed some attention. After commissioning an inspection, and the hoist receiving a Fair grade, there were a number of areas of concern that were identified that needed immediate attention. We decided to take this opportunity while making necessary repairs, to upgrade it s capacity to 5 tons while increasing height approximately 29 inches. We are in the finishing stages of getting this work completed, so we can get the crane reassembled and ready for the season. This move further supports our dry-sail fleet with hopes of continuing to grow the opportunities in this area. 3. There s no denying that we have had fluky weather these past 3 months. There have been several northern systems that have produced high winds and pounding waves that have undermined the gobi mats in a number of areas, particularly those that run east-west along sidewalk. The executive has been consulting with ERCA and industry experts to formulate the best plan of attack to address this issue. We hope to have a solution in place to address this problem as quickly as possible to stop any further erosion. It s such an exciting time! I hope to see everyone out at the next Happy Hour on the 4th. Sail-A-Bration 2018 Pg 2 Pg 3 Pg 4 Pg 5 Pg 6 Pg 7 Sunday June 10th! Please let me know if you would like an evening scheduled to discuss braiding mooring lines. fredeagen@gmail.com Pool noodles will no longer be allowed on docking lines in the harbour. I will be finishing up this year and Marie will be your new Editor of the first issue in February 2019. Jackie 4

From Social Chair, Louise Marentette April was a cold and wet month, but that didn t stop the artists among us from strutting their stuff. We had a really fun afternoon painting with Jenifer while sipping some wine, and visiting with friends. Photos are available on the SPSC Facebook page.
