THE ROAD IS SOMETIMES BUMPY: Last night marked the second-straight road contest in which the Cubs were blanked (also May 14 in St. Louis) and the third time in the last five road games starting May 10 in Colorado that Chicago was kept off the board. The Cubs have managed just three or fewer runs and six or fewer hits in each of their last five road games since May 10 in Colorado that s Chicago s longest such stretch on the road since five-straight games with no more than three runs and six hits, September 18-28, 1981 against Montreal and Pittsburgh. ABOUT THE BULLPEN: The Cubs have needed just one reliever in each of their last two games, with Mike Montgomery recording a 4.0-inning save in relief of starter Eddie Butler on Thursday and Felix Peña following Jake Arrieta to finish last night s game this is the first time the team has used one or fewer relievers in twostraight games since June 1-2 of last season vs. the Dodgers. Last June 1, Jon Lester pitched a complete game June 2, Kyle Hendricks went 8.0 innings and Travis Wood finished the game in the ninth. Montgomery s save on Thursday marked the first time in 20 years that a Cubs pitcher had earned a save in which he pitched at least 4.0 innings and allowed no runs Kent Bottenfield had previously turned the trick, July 4, 1997, at Philadelphia.
