Gel Drop Seal for FOSC 450 Fiber Optic Splice Enclosure Installation Instructions TECP-30-215 Issue 1 4/2013 INTRODUCTION The Gel Drop Seal device is for use with FOSC 450 B, B Short, C, and D size closures to simplify the installation of drop cables by allowing the cables to be installed without removing the closure gel block and base. Each Gel Drop Seal kit has the capability of handling up to 4 flat drop style cables, and each closure can hold up to 4 Gel Drop Seal devices. CONTENTS 1 TERMS USED IN THESE INSTRUCTIONS................ 1 2 NEW GEL DROP SEAL INSTALLATION................. 1 3 ADDING A DROP TO AN EXISTING INSTALLATION......... 6 4 CUSTOMER INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE............ 8 2 NEW GEL DROP SEAL INSTALLATION To install a new Gel Drop Seal device, use the following procedure. Note: If adding additional drops to an existing gel drop seal, go to Section 3 on Page 6. 1. Make sure all air is bled from closure. To remove the dome from the closure, release the clamp handle, hook the handle on the two posts, and pull back until the clamp releases from the closure. These are the three steps shown in Figure 2. Note: Keep the O-ring, clamp, and dome clean and dry. 1 TERMS USED IN THESE INSTRUCTIONS Figure 2 shows the main terms used in these instructions. Release the base from the metal cable attachment bracket. 4. Slide the base back and out of the way. Open the gel block as shown in Figure 3 by squeezing with both hands. Note: Install all cables and the FOSC gel block before installing gel drop seal. POSITION 11 POSITION 1 POSITION 9 POSITION 3 TYPICAL POSITIONS FOR EXPRESS/FEEDER CABLES 25223-A Figure 4. Recommended Positions 6. Align the gel drop seal to the slot in the metal bracket (Figure 5). Push the seal into the slot until it snaps into place. Close the FOSC gel block. Figure 3. Opening the Gel Block 5. Select the slot to be used for the gel drop seal. Note: Gel Drop Seals in any of the 4 closure cable entry positions shown (Figure 2); however, we recommend using the 3 and 9 o clock positions for the first 1-2 devices, then the 1 and 11 o clock positions for subsequent devices. Figure 5. Aligning the Gel Drop Seal 7. Starting with position 1 (as identified in Figure 6), remove as many strength member retention brackets as drops to be installed. Page 2
TECP-30-215 Issue 1 4/2013 Note: For best results, install the drops in the order shown in Figure 6. 8. Remove the yellow plugs in the slots corresponding to where the strength brackets were just removed. Refer to Figure 8. 2 1 3 4 13944-V Figure 8. Removing Yellow Plugs Figure 6. Order in Which to Install Drops Note: To remove strength member brackets, pull back on locking tab slightly to slide out the bracket as shown in Figure 7. Figure 7. Removing Strength Bracket 9. Push each drop a minimum of 48 in. past the top of gel drop if going directly to splice tray, or a minimum 62 in. if storing a loop in storage basket and then going to the splice tray. TECP-30-215 Issue 1 4/2013 10. Strip the flat drops starting as close to the top of the gel drop seal as possible. Refer to Figure 10. Cut the strength members 3-4 in. in length. Figure 12. Tightening Nut 12. Figure 10. Stripping Flat Drop 11. Position the strength members under the washer and route the buffer tube to the opposite side as shown in Figure 11. Tighten the nut to retain the strength members as shown in Figure 12. Pull back on each drop while guiding the strength member bracket back into its original position until it is locked in place, as shown in Figure 13. Figure 13. TECP-30-215 Issue 1 4/2013 13. Tighten the stinger, on the Gel Drop Seal as shown in Figure 14, until the spring is no longer visible. 16. Install the clamp around the dome to base interface. Position the feet of the handle in front of the two posts and push down on the handle to pull the two halves of the clamp together, as shown in Figure 16. Figure 14. Tightening Stinger 14. Slide the base up and over the gel block. The arrow on the base must be at the top of the closure. Secure base to metal bracket. 15. Mount the dome onto the base, aligning the arrow on the base with the arrow on the dome (where applicable), as shown in Figure 15. Make sure the O-ring is in the correct position. Figure 16. Installing Clamp 17. Continue to push the handle down until the small pin on the handle snaps into the triangular hole in the clamp. Figure 15. Aligning Arrows Page 5
TECP-30-215 Issue 1 4/2013 3 ADDING A DROP TO AN EXISTING INSTALLATION If adding a drop to an existing gel drop seal installation, use the following procedure. 1. Make sure all air is bled from closure. To remove the dome from the closure, release the clamp handle, hook the handle on the two posts, and pull back until the clamp releases from the closure. Keep the o-ring, clamp, and dome clean and dry. These are the three steps shown in Figure 17. Note: Keep the o-ring, clamp, and dome clean and dry. Figure 18. Releasing Pressure on Seal By Turning Stinger 3. Remove the plug from the gel drop seal and corresponding strength member retention bracket, as shown in Figure 19. Figure 19.
