Exemplar for internal assessment resource Physical Education for Achievement Standard 90967 Exemplar for Internal Achievement Standard Physical Education Level 1 This exemplar supports assessment against: Achievement Standard 90967 Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes An annotated exemplar is an extract of student evidence, with a commentary, to explain key aspects of the standard. These will assist teachers to make assessment judgements at the grade boundaries. New Zealand Qualification Authority To support internal assessment from 2014 NZQA 2014

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Physical Education for Achievement Standard 90967 Grade Boundary: Low Excellence 1. For Excellence, the student needs to demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity, and describe, comprehensively, the outcomes. This involves: demonstrating influencing strategies considering how well the application of the strategies did or did not result in the performance improvement judgments which are supported with an explanation and examples or evidence. Influencing strategies are detailed in Explanatory Note (EN) 3. The student has demonstrated influencing strategies. Refer to teacher evidence (1). The student has described comprehensively, by providing a detailed explanation of how well the application of the strategy did/did not result in performance improvement (2). The student has provided a judgment for feedback (3). To reach Excellence more securely, the student would need to provide: more evidence for the judgment made about knowledge of technique for the dig, such as what is hard about getting into position and why a hard serve makes it difficult to get into position more detail about what other types of feedback could be used and why. I have been taught over year 9 and 10 how to dig the ball by various teachers. I am know trying to remember what it is that they taught me and practise this. This strategy by itself will not be enough for improvement and I must combine it with other strategies like feedback to make sure that my knowledge of the dig is accurate and will help me improve. Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: Knowing how to get ready for a dig and how to hold your hands means you can dig the ball to the right person ie your spikers and give them time to get under it to perform a spike. If the ball is served hard though I have problems getting into position quickly and getting a flat surface and the ball tends to fly off in all directions. You have to change the type of dig that you do when ball is too far away from you. When I couldn t get two hands to the ball I had to try and use one. For serves that come over the net straight to you I have no trouble digging the ball to other players, using the knowledge I have of the dig technique. I can get into position and set myself to receive a dig. When practising the dig I can get it to go to other players and get good height on the ball so that other players have time to set the ball. As mentioned above I do have problems with balls that are served hard and trying to defend against spikes that come my way, I don t seem to be able to get into position fast enough and have limited knowledge of how to do this. This is where feedback from people with more knowledge about the dig would come in handy. 2 I know my basic dig is good as I can return most balls that are served over the net to me either to the setter at the front of the net of dig it back over the net. However, when the ball is served hard from an overhand serve or spiked away from me I hardly ever get the ball back to a height that can be set or over the net. I need to try and increase my knowledge of the dig for balls that are served hard and spiked and for balls that are not in the correct position for a two handed dig. As doing this will increase the percentage of balls that I can return to my team mates and not let the opposition get easy points. I need to get feedback on how to do a one handed dig and how to deal with fast overhead serves and spikes so that I can return these. This was an essential strategy to use. If you have no knowledge of the event that you are going to do then you cannot improve performance as you do not know what needs improving or even how to improve with self feedback. As most of us had some knowledge of volleyball having played in year 10 then we had some knowledge of the dig. However if you did not have any knowledge then you would have to rely on other strategies to help you.

Name: Student 1 Strategy/Factor used: Feedback I am getting my teacher to look at my dig shot for balls that are served from an overhand serve and balls that are spiked because this is an area that I struggle with and I need to find out what I am doing wrong. She then gave me sheet of what the dig should look like and feedback from that. For example at the bottom of the sheet she wrote keep a wide base of support so that you can get down low to the ball. She then verbally restated what she had written on the sheet and demonstrated to me what the movements should look like, so I could visualise how it should be done. In a group of 3, I have one team member who is strong on an overhand serve and she serves to me, I dig the ball back. Another drill involves my team member setting the ball high to the other team member who spikes it over the net and I try to dig the ball back. When I can, I get the teacher to give me feedback about my dig. Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: My knowledge of the dig is not great as I do not play competitive or social volleyball and the only knowledge I have is from Junior PE. I need feedback from the teacher to help improve my dig shot when returning balls that are hit hard. This specific feedback will help me to increase my knowledge of the dig, therefore giving me more opportunity to dig the ball of hard serves and spikes. If I don t have any feedback, I will not know what I am doing right and what I am doing wrong, therefore I will not make any improvement on my dig shot at all. I found this type of external feedback the most positive as it gave me the greatest improvement in the least amount of time. It also increased my knowledge of the dig which in turn improved my performance. The feedback given to me by the teacher has improved my dig shot. My knowledge of technique has now improved and I have my arms closer together which is creating a larger flatter platform for the ball to come off my arms and go where I want it. It also means I am hitting the ball in the correct place which means it is easier to dig to the ball of overhead serves and digs. Before my platform was not flat, meaning that my dig shot would go up rather than over the net or to another member of my team. I would also hit the ball with the bony parts of my hand, so the ball would shoot off in the wrong direction. 3 I am now able to increase the accuracy of my digs off overhead serves and spikes and get the ball up higher to other team members so that they have time to get under the ball. I can get into position quicker for overhead serves and spikes. I will use this external feedback in other areas and shots of my game. Using feedback in my overhand serve from the teacher will help to increase my knowledge of technique of this serve. This will make my serve harder to get back result and a greater chance of gaining more points for our team. I will also try and use other types of feedback like video analysis to help improve other areas of my game. I also thought that this strategy was important as this was how I improved without teacher feedback I might have to rely on just watching other people or my own knowledge of the shots associated with volleyball.

For Merit, the student needs to demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe, in depth, the outcomes. This involves: demonstrating influencing strategies explaining how and why the strategies influence performance in a physical activity explaining why the strategies were applied for performance improvement. Influencing strategies are detailed in EN3. The student has demonstrated influencing strategies. Refer to teacher evidence (1). The student has described, in depth, by providing an explanation of how and why knowledge of technique (set), and the additional factor (motivation), influenced the physical activity, including why the strategies were applied for performance improvement (2). The student has provided a judgment for the first strategy (knowledge of technique) supported with a brief explanation and evidence (3). To reach Excellence, the student would need to provide a more detailed explanation, and examples or evidence for the additional factor (motivation) to support the judgement made. NZQA 2014

I am working at keeping my fingers spread well apart and getting directly under the ball. I have got a few balls and placed myself at different areas in the front court and am working on accuracy with the shot. Then with my group of three we are going to set the ball to each other at the front of the net working on our placement. Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: This will help me to set the ball more accurately to other players in the team. By setting the ball to targets like in a real game of volleyball then when playing I will be able to put the ball high and into the area that is needed for a spike. I need to get directly under the ball so that if I let my hands go, it should hit me in the forehead. My hands need to form a triangle above my forehead, and all of my finger pads should touch the ball, not my palms. I shouldn t hear a slapping noise when I set the ball. I must extend my arms and legs so I can give the ball as much height as possible, and extend my hands in the direction where I want the ball to go. Working on placement will help to put the ball in an area that we can score a point from. 2 My knowledge of the set is not great and I am not getting enough height when I go to set the ball. When I go to set it sometimes it rolls of my fingers and does not go high enough for the other player to get and they end up digging the ball. Sometimes I hear a slapping noise and that is because I am setting the ball with my palms and not my finger pads. I am also not extending my legs, but just my arms, so I am not getting the ball high enough to set it up for a team member to spike it. I need to improve my knowledge of the set as at the moment it is not working too well for me. I know it is not working because the other players in my group are having to dig too many balls to me and move all over the place to try and set the ball back to me. I have watched others set the ball and my balls lack the height that they are getting. Other team members are not able to spike from my sets, and I am still hearing a slapping noise when I set the ball. Extra height give the other players time to get under the ball and will increase the number of shots that can be played, this can also decrease the angle that the ball will be returned at which will make it harder for the opposition. 3 I will try and get more power into the shot set so that it goes higher in the air. I need to try

and use more body parts when setting the ball. To do this I will try and bend my knees more and use these muscles to get the ball higher so that my players can have time to get under it, and think more about using my finger pads rather than my palms when making contact with the ball. My knowledge of the set needs to improve so that I can achieve this. I think that this was a good strategy to use. My knowledge of the set managed to get me so far but when more in-depth knowledge was required then I had to use other strategies to try and improve my performance. At the start of my session I used my knowledge of the set from last year to try and improve performance but the change in my performance wasn t great without using other strategies. Name: Student 2 Strategy/Factor used: Motivation Talking positively to my team mates to improve their motivation and mine. I am doing this by being lively on the court and talking to others in my team so that they know where I am on the court. I also will call for the ball so that people know whose ball it is and this will hopefully avoid confrontation with others in the team leading to increased motivation on my behalf. Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: I am doing this so that everyone in my team feels motivated to try their best, with an increase in motivation I will feel more willing to go and get a shot that I might otherwise not try for. Increasing my motivation will have a follow on effect for the rest of the team as they will see how hard I am trying and this will increase my overall improvement. As the more motivated I am the more likely I am to work for the team. 2 It is working as I feel much more motivated to participate in the game and this seems to be rubbing off on others in the team. By having the correct gear and by being excited on court this increases the teams motivation this leads to better communication between players which leads to players calling for balls and improving performance. We are winning more games and we are calling for the ball more often this is leading to less shots being missed because of people being greedy and getting in other peoples way. I am going to work on setting goals as this will provide more motivation for me and maybe even for the team I think that this was a good strategy to use as without motivation you will have little to keep you going and enthused when taking part in volleyball. I found motivation depended on my moods for the day and I need to find methods to improve it if I was not all that motivated.

I am using my palm to serve the ball over the net trying to get a low angle over the net. Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: Having the serve go over at a low angle makes it harder for the opposition to return the ball. Using a flat hand means more of your hand in contact with the ball which gives you a greater chance to get the ball over the net. 2 3 Yes the ball is consistently going in the court because of my knowledge of technique. Having a flat hand when serving the ball gives greater contact with the ball giving more accuracy. The ball is going over the net 90% of the time and at a flat angle. That means that the majority of my serves are good and they are hard to get back. In one game we played all my serves went over meaning that no points were lost on the serve as an unforced error. 4 I will try and do an overhand serve using the flat of my hand to get more power when hitting the ball over the net. I think that you need a knowledge of the type of serve that you are going to play otherwise how will you improve. Name: Student 3 Strategy/Factor used: Type of practice Doing massed practice to practice my serve I am repeating the serve over and over again so

that I get it right and my serve improves Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: The more that I do it the better I will get. Practising over and over again will give me an opportunity to perfect my serve and get it to go where I want it to go. This will help improve my performance because it means that more serves will go in meaning less easy points for the other team. 2 3 It seems to be working I have practised the same movement and technique over and over again. I am getting more and more accurate with my serve less of them are hitting the net when I serve it and more of them are going over the net 4 I will apply this type of practise to the others skills that are associated with volley like the dig and set and this will help me to improve my skills in these shots and in the improving my performance in the game over all. I got bored with this type of practise and often got off task by talking to other people.

You make sure that you have your fingers spread apart and that you have a diamond shape between the fingers. Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: I am using my knowledge of the set so that there is more finger space on the ball for control and when I go to hit it. I will have more control of the ball so that I can set it to where I want it to go like one of my team mates. Before I would just set the ball over the net and hope that it stayed in the court and not really worry about setting it up for a spike. 2 3 4 Yes I seem to have more control over the ball. When I go to set the ball I am setting to a specific area like the front or the net so that my team mates can spike the ball. This is an important skill in volleyball so that your team can win a point. I will start to get a little more height on my sets so that the spikers can have more time to get into position. I could do this by getting my team mate to yell out if the ball is high enough or not and keep doing drills until I get this technique of getting my sets high enough. I could get my teacher to check my technique when he has time either during drills or during a game. I thought this was a good strategy to use Name: Student 4 Strategy/Factor used: Related fitness

Going for a run around the 3km course at school so that I can improve my fitness when playing volleyball. I am pretty unfit at the moment, so I need to improve at my cardiovascular fitness. Why are you applying this and do you think it will help improve overall improvement: I am doing this so that I will be fitter when I play volleyball and not let my team down when playing. If I am fitter than I will be able to get to the ball more often. I have only just started but I feel better and fitter after going for a run Because last time I went for a run I could run a little further than I did this time. This means that I am getting fitter (because I have been working on my cardiovascular fitness by running) and therefore will be able to last longer when playing a game of volleyball and get more shots. 4 I will start to go for longer and faster runs which will make me fitter Yep you need this strategy to play the game more effectively and have the fitness to get to shots.

I need to move to the ball quicker because I am too slow and miss shots. Our class went to the gym and did circuit training. I think doing the agility step ladder as part of the gym circuit is made me move my feet faster. I need to do this in volleyball because I move to slow to the ball and need to move my feet quicker. I feel like I am getting fitter than like at the start of the term. 2 4 After playing volley for a while I started to get used to the physical fitness needed in this sport and all our warm-ups helped a lot. My fitness got better the more we played. Play more games and start going for a run. This was a good strategy to use because it got me stronger. More of my serves are going over the net then when I first started playing volleyball. Now when I play the majority of the serves go over the net Put more power into my serves so that they are harder to return I didn t know much about the serve do this was probably not a good strategy for me to use.

I am starting to feel more motivated. I am starting to enjoy it a bit more than before. I am more motivated to get to shots and serves from the other team rather than let someone else get them. Apply motivation to other areas of my life. I could try other sports that I don t think I am good at like soccer and softball.
