Philadelphia Phillies (52-62) vs. LOS ANGELES DODGERS (63-49) RHP Vince Velasquez (8-3, 3.33) vs. RHP Kenta Maeda (10-7, 3.22) Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016 7:10 p.m. PT Dodger Stadium Los Angeles, CA Game 113 Home Game 58 (36-21) Night Game 84 (44-39) TV: SNLA/SNLA Spanish Radio: AM 570 (Eng.)/KTNQ 1020 AM (Span.)/AM 1540 (Kor.) AUGUST HEAT: The Dodgers, winners of three consecutive games, continue their 10-day, nine-game homestand tonight with the second of three games against the Philadelphia Phillies as they look to improve their 2016 series record to 21-12-4. Following tomorrow s 12:10 p.m. start, Los Angeles will host the Pittsburgh Pirates for three games to round out the homestand (3-1). Los Angeles trails the Giants by 1.0 game in the divisional race, and continues to lead the NL Wild Card chase, 4.0 games ahead of the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers have the second-best home record in the NL at 36-21 (.632), behind only the Cubs 37-17 (.685). After opening the season by going 9-12 in their first 21 games at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers are 27-9 at home since May 17. The Dodgers are a season-high 14 games over.500 The Dodgers won the season series with Philadelphia, 5-2, last season and overall are 19-10 against the Phillies since the start of the 2012 campaign. WON T SLOW DOWN: Dodger catcher Yasmani Grandal established a new career high for homers last night, belting his 17 th of the season. He has hit safely in his last eight games since July 29, going 12-for-26 (.462) with two doubles, a triple, three homers and eight RBI. Grandal has 11 homers in his last 27 games since June 30, which is tops in the NL, while batting.349 (30-for-86) with a.472 on-base percentage, a.779 slugging percentage and 19 RBI in that span. Since June 30, he s raised his overall batting average by 57 points (from.178 to.235). THE GLUE: Justin Turner doubled in the first inning last night and has now hit safely in his last nine games, going 12-for-37 (.324) with seven doubles, two homers and six RBI since July 30, and in 50 games since June 10, he leads the NL with 16 homers and ranks second with 45 RBI, one behind the Rockies Carlos Gonzalez. Turner s.655 slugging percentage since June 10 trails only Arizona s Jake Lamb (.683). Turner has been among the most productive third baseman in the NL all season: NL Third Basemen Most Home Runs in 2016 (based on players primary 2016 position) Nolan Arenado, COL 30 Kris Bryant, CHC 27 Jake Lamb, ARI 24 Justin Turner, LAD 20 Maikel Franco, PHI 20 SOURCE: STATS, LLC THE ROCK: Dodger first baseman Adrián González went 2-for-4 with an RBI last night and has posted a.360 batting average (45-for-125) in his last 35 games since June 27, the second-best mark in the NL in that span. During that time, González has a.434 on-base percentage (3 rd NL), a.520 slugging percentage and is 14-for-30 (.467) with runners in scoring position. With 300 career home runs, González is currently tied with Chuck Klein for 139 th on the all-time home run list, one shy of Rogers Hornsby and Jose Bautista. His 403 career doubles rank 10 th among active Major Leaguers, two behind A.J. Pierzynski and one ahead of Mark Teixeira. DO WE NEED TO EVEN VOTE?: Dodger rookie shortstop Corey Seager blasted two solo home runs last night, which gives him 21 on the season. Seager has now hit more homers by a shortstop than any other Los Angeles Dodger and is one big fly short of the franchise mark for shortstops, currently held by Glenn Wright, who belted 22 in 1930. Seager ranks among the National League s best in runs (73, 4 th ), hits (131, 5 th ), doubles (31, 4 th ), home runs (21, T-13 th ) and batting average (.302, 14 th ). On Saturday, he set the L. A. Dodger single-season rookie record for doubles with 31, breaking the mark previously held by Eric Karros (30, 1992). Seager s two homers last night make him just the eighth rookie in club history to reach 20 home runs, joining Mike Piazza (35, 1993), Joc Pederson (26, 2015), Del Bissonette (25, 1928), Johnny Frederick (24, 1929), Frank Howard (23, 1960), Greg Brock (20, 1983) and Eric Karros (20, 1992). Taylor went 11-for-48 (.229) with two doubles, two triples, a homer and seven RBI in 24 games during his first call-up with the Dodgers before being optioned on Sunday. Van Slyke, who was also on the DL from April 12-June 3 with lower back irritation, has hit.225 with a homer and seven RBI in 52 games this year. PLEASANT EVENINGS: In a private ceremony this afternoon in the Vin Scully Press Box, Assembly members Chris Holden and Jimmy Gomez presented Assembly Concurrent Resolution 195 to Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully, recognizing his exceptional 67 year-long career with the Dodgers. The Dodgers will salute their Hall of Fame broadcaster in a special ceremony before the game on Sept. 23 vs. the Colorado Rockies. STILL KNOWN AS THE MAN: Dodger second baseman Chase Utley played his first Major League game against the Phillies last night, the organization with which he was drafted and played for his first 13 years in the big leagues. Utley was acquired by the Dodgers in a deal with Philadelphia last year on Aug. 19 and then re-signed with Los Angeles this past offseason. The Southern California native ranks among the Phillies modern-era franchise leaders in games played (1551, 7 th ), hits (1623, 9 th ), runs (949, 6 th ), doubles (346, 5 th ), home runs (233, 6 th ), RBI (916, 7 th ) and walks (625, 10 th ). Utley barely batted from the top spot in Philly, but has done quite well with L.A.: NL Players 2016 Most Hits as #1 Hitter in Lineup Jean Segura, ARI 130 Charlie Blackmon, COL 121 Denard Span, SF 106 Jonathan Villar, MIL 99 Chase Utley, LAD 88 SOURCE: STATS, LLC HILLTOPPERS: The Dodgers lead the Major Leagues with 1,050 strikeouts and are on pace to set a club record for Ks, averaging 9.33 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (previous best: 8.69 SO/9 in 2015). Los Angeles also ranks second in the Majors in both WHIP (1.13) and opponents batting average (.224). With his victory over the Rockies at Coors Field last Thursday, Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda became the 13 th pitcher in Los Angeles history to post double-digit wins in his rookie season (last: Ryu, 2013). Maeda leads qualifying MLB rookies in wins (10), strikeouts (125), ERA (3.22), opponents batting average (.220), innings pitched (125.2) and WHIP (1.07). BANGED UP: The Dodgers have had 26 players on the disabled list this year, the most ever by a National League club and the second most by any team in the last 30 years since 1987, behind only the 2012 Red Sox (27) Brett Anderson (herniated disc surgery) made his third rehab start last night, this time for Triple-A Oklahoma City, and allowed two runs and six hits in 5.0 innings while striking out two and walking none over 71 pitches. Anderson will be back in L.A. today and the location of his next start is undetermined. PONG ANYONE?: This Thursday at Dodger Stadium, Ellen and Clayton Kershaw will host the Fourth Annual Ping Pong 4 Purpose celebrity ping pong tournament benefitting Kershaw s Challenge. The charity, which was founded in 2011, partners with organizations both locally and abroad who are on the front lines of change in the lives of vulnerable and at-risk children. Dodger players and celebrities are expected to attend, and more information on the sold-out event can be found online at KershawsChallenge.com. Earlier today, Kiké Hernandez and Joc Pederson visited with pediatric and cancer patients at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The pair handed out Dodger gift bags and helped a little girl (and big Dodger fan) on her morning therapy walk.
