POWHATAN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY 2006 HOUSE TOUR UPCOUNTRY HOMES ALONG THE OLD HUNTING PATH Saturday, September 30, 2006 10 A.M. 4 P.M. Large planters patented thousands of acres of land in Powhatan and built upcountry quarters along the Old Hunting Path leading to the west. The tour features three of these homes, a tavern from the period, a modern home built on patented land, the 1849 restored courthouse and the May Memorial Baptist Church sanctuary. All tour sites are located in central Powhatan, on or near Old Buckingham Road (Rt. 13). ALL TOUR SITES ARE LOCATED IN CENTRAL POWHATAN COUNTY ON OR NEAR OLD BUCKINGHAM ROAD (ROUTE 13) MILL QUARTER PLANTATION 1600 MILL QUARTER ROAD. This stately brick home was built in 1770 and sits in a grove of hollies, cedar, dogwood and boxwood. Two entries lead to twelve rooms with crown molding and mantels with marble surrounds and to stairways with walnut rails. MOREWOOD 1470 Morewood Drive. A Flemish bond, Federal style home, using a side passage, was constructed around 1821 and connects to a 1790 kitchen. Two living-room windows are recessed in beautifully carved arches. The hand carved stairway, mantel, windows and doorframes required two years for completion. The deep, brick-lined icehouse at Morewood will be available for viewing on the day of the tour.
ERIN HILL 3840 Old Buckingham Road. Built of Flemish bond around 1833 within the existing walls of a burned-out 1700s home. Two wings added in 1948 to the two-storied home with a full basement. Now painted white, it is a private residence and a bed and breakfast. POWHATAN COURTHOUSE 3880 Old Buckingham Road. The courthouse, designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, was built in 1849. It was renovated and wings were added in 1992. The old courtroom has been restored to its 1849 appearance. The sanctuary of MAY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 3922 Old Buckingham Road, will be open. Dedicated in 1962, the sanctuary features beautiful memorial stained glass windows. FIELD HOUSE -- 3630 Branch Lake Court. Built in 2004, Field House is named for an ancestral family home in Yorkshire, England. The home overlooks Goodwyn Lake. Decorated with vibrant colors and eight chandeliers, the home is furnished with many family pieces and antiques collected by the owners over a forty-year period. MACON TAVERN 1875 Giles Bridge Road. The original part of this country home was built in 1753; a two-story addition dates from 1907.
