golf club newsletter n o 77. september 2010 Introduction from the Captain - Mr. Vernon Reed The hot weather has continued unabated and with a fair few members taking themselves off to cooler climes and the rest of us hanging out at the beach it s been a quiet time on the golf front. However, September will be a busy golfing month. Along with the usual monthly Medal, Stableford and roll ups, the Matchplay Championships will be held over three days starting 10th September and the sign up sheets are already up on the notice boards. Before you get the next newsletter we will have played the Pinheiros Altos Ryder Cup. This is always great fun as we play our matches in the morning and have the option to watch the real thing on the big screen in the clubhouse. Happy Days... play golf, watch great golf and have a drink with your mates! I hope you sign up and I ll see you there! Captain Reed signing off. Happy golfing! Gala Week page 1

Director of Golf - Monthly Report August has been a quiet month for golf although not without golfing achievements. Chris Hales had a flash from the past 42 pts to win the August Stableford. Steve Flanagan and P. J. O Regan scored 48 pts Better Ball in the Men s Roll Up and this takes the lead in the Padraig Harrington Trophy presented to the best score of a member/ member combination in the Roll Up throughout the calendar year. P. J. came down to 9 h cp for his sins! Then there was Andy Watkins who had a very expensive Hole-In-One with a 6 iron at the 5th Corks during the Social Golf Tournament. Congratulations Andy. Off the course we have had member Brian Gallen cycling for Help the Heroes from London to Paris. Also a total of 35 members and property owners enjoyed a fabulous day on Ilha Deserta on the 2nd September and I have no doubt that this trip, the very bright idea of APPA President, Roger Kitson will be the first of many. Photographs will appear in the October issue as we are taking up most of the space this month with shots from the 2010 Sunshine Classic Gala Week. Now I have an unusual notice which had it been written on April 1st would not have been believed by anyone. On the 20th September for approximately 45 days, Pinheiros Altos will have some unusual visitors. 6 falcons especially trained to chase away pigeons will be at work, to hopefully rid the resort of these pests. I am assured that other types of birds, your dogs, cats and wigs will be safe in their company. They are only after one thing! Denise Reed and Barbara Fletcher preparing for a Charity Walk (see articles on both these charitable contributions elsewhere in this issue). Competition Results for August Date Competition Winner Score Runner Up Score Tues 3rd Junior Open James Stonehill 44 Pts Daniel Waters 39 Pts Sun 15th August Stableford Chris Hales 42 Pts Wendy Collins 38 Pts Ladies Section - by Helen Mills After all the excitement of Captains Day and Gala Week at the end of July, August settled down to a quiet time for golf but nonetheless we had a great turnout of 29 players for the Medal on the 4th. Molly Wainwright took the prize for the 2nd Division with a great 70 nett and yours truly, had another out of body experience for one day only, winning the 1st Division prize with 69 nett. Barbara Kyne, Edyta Procter and Marie Monahan also returned great scores on the day. Shona took over the reins on the 11th and treated everyone to a Reverse Waltz and came in with the winning team on Corks to Olives. Hilary was back in the seat for the qualifying stableford on the 18th which was won by Sally Evans (38pts) and Sam Waters (37pts) for 1st and 2nd divisions respectively, well done ladies. The on 25th Sept, Barbara and Denise, who are walking the pilgrim trail from Tui to Santiago de Compostela in northern Portugal at the end of the month, organized a fun competition page 3

with the proceeds going to the DEC Pakistan Floods appeal. The ladies raised 370 and this amount was topped up by the men s roll up competition later that day bringing the total to a fantastic 680. Good luck to Barbara and Denise on your walk and especially to your back up team who I am sure are stocking up on blister plasters, massage oil, French wine and packing a copy of the Michelin guide for the areas to be visited along the way. Ooh to be a fly on the wall/road! Thanks to Shona, Hilary, Denise and Barbara for standing in for me whilst I basked in sunny, yes sunny! Ireland. We are now looking forward to the Club Matchplay Championships on 10th till 12th Sept. It may be too much to ask for such a thrilling ladies final as we had last year between Molly Wainwright and Melaura Parker but I am sure the same spirit will prevail. Good luck to everyone who has entered, I am just hoping to get through the playoff any more I will treat as a bonus. Dates for Your Diary: Ladies Invitation Day is on September 22nd, the sign-up sheet in now on the notice board. It will be a better ball format and playing partners can be found for you if you wish, just tick the box or let me, or any committee member, know if you want a playing partner. Another reminder about Lady Captain s Day incorporating the coveted Rosebowl Trophy competition. This will be held on 8th October in conjunction with the Ladies Annual Dinner and Eclectic Competition prize giving. Once the venue, menu etc. have been decided I will be emailing everyone with the information so that you can sign up even if you are not currently in Portugal. The Wooden Spoon: - Friday 15th October, some time off yet but just in case you want to make plans to make a special journey for this hard fought and fun event Interclub Ladies Friendly away match against Carvoeiro on 20th September, usually a tough match so please sign up if you can play, we won the home match so they will be hard to beat away. Barbara and Denise s - Caminho to Santiago de Compostela As many of you already know, Barbara and I have decided to follow the Portuguese Pilgrim Trail from Tui (north of Porto) to Santiago de Compostela. It s a walk that s about 120 km and will take 7 days. We ll be walking along quiet country roads, woodland paths and river valleys and both of us feel very fortunate that we will be seeing parts of Portugal that are way off the beaten track. In medieval times the sheer beauty of the humble countryside inspired the pilgrims to sing songs...lets hope Barbara doesn t feel the need to express herself in that way, as anyone who has heard her sing can testify, it would make the walk so much longer!!! Both of us thought that we would like to sponsor a golf day to raise money for the DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee), so last Wednesday we organised the ladies fun day, playing a made up competition where we alternated our tee shots from the Red, Blue and Yellow Tees. It really was good fun! We would like to thank the generosity of the ladies section for their donations and to also say a big thank you to the men who play with Keith and Vernon on Wednesday for their kind contributions. The money has now been sent to DEC and will go to the flood relief victims in Pakistan. Many thanks to all! We leave for our walk on 28th September and have been walking for 2 hours 3 times a week with our top trainer Margo, who incidentally is a very hard task master, to get in tip top shape for this caminhada!!! We re having good fun training but are a bit upset with the Director of Golf who has sarcastically commented that the training is simply an excuse for a fag and a natter and can only see the funny side of our efforts... Hmmmmmmmmm!!! Anyway, we will let you know how we get on and thank you once again for supporting and encouraging us! Denise & Barbara page 4

their chosen charity. Brian chose to support Help for Heroes and he raised just over 5000 pounds, all of which went to the charity as he paid for the trip himself. In case you don t know Help for Heroes is an entirely voluntary charity with no overheads. So all of the money raised goes to help a service man or woman who has suffered an injury serving their country in either Iraq or Afghanistan. PA member Brian Gallen on the left with fellow charity cyclist Alan Milne PA member Brian Gallen on the left with fellow charity cyclist Alan Milne PA member Brian Gallen completed a 300 mile charity cycle from London to Paris on Saturday August 22nd. The trip took four days and started from Crystal Palace. 87 people took part, most of them under the age of 35, all of them raised money for Now 300 miles on a bike is a pretty tough challenge and not recommended for the faint hearted. A selection of padded shorts, lotions and potions and a decent racing bike certainly helped but if anyone is interested, there is a very nice bicycle for sale, one careful owner with under 1000 miles on the clock! If anyone is feeling generous please go onto Brian s fund raising site: www.bmycharity.com/brianpariscycle And remember that 100% of whatever you donate is helping a brave man or woman recover. Social Golf - by Molly Wainwright A small select group played the nine hole waltz on 5th August. The start was delayed until 5 p.m. as it was so hot. As ever the scores were excellent and very close only 4 points between the flights. Jorge provided an excellent supper and as is usual everyone enjoyed it. The winning team with 43 points were:- Iain Callaghan, Roy Baddeley, Stella Jeffrey and Molly Wainwright. Interclub Following our summer break, there is not much to report this month, but plenty to look forward to. On Monday September 6th we travel to Silves Golf Club to play Serra de Monchique and then on Tuesday 21st September we make the long journey to play Parque de Floresta. It is very exciting as we have to play both these teams home & away and there is no doubt that the title will be decided between us. I intend fielding as strong a team as possible for all these matches so that we may just win the league. Pro Tip - Ross Sutherland To be a good putter you need to roll the ball consistently. To help with this at address, try and set your hands slightly ahead of the putter head. Now as you make the strike, allow a little wrist hinge on the backswing as you keep the putter low to the ground and now the most important part is to keep the shaft of the putter as close to vertical through and after impact to give you a more consistent roll. The current standing are: Alto 67 pts from 12 games, ourselves 62 pts from 10 games, Serra de Monchique 60 pts from 9 games and PDF 60 pts from 10 games. So it is all to play for. Neil Bamber Interclub Captain page 5

Social Golf - by Andy Watkins 29th August Am-Am Team So can I tell you about my hole in one? Playing teams of 4, I get a hole in one (5 pts). Stella Jeffrey follows with a Birdie and 2 shots (5 pts), our other two get 2 pts each. We score 14 points on one hole and we still didn t win!!!!!! Such is Social Golf when 32 players wander out on a Sunday afternoon, playing best 2 scores & all to count on par 3 s. After an excellent chicken curry followed by fruit and ice cream, the prizes were distributed. Among the usual bottles of alcohol were several very elegant short sleeved waterproof tops which were donated anonymously by a member (thanks David Markey - -OOPs), more are in our store for future use. To the usual cheers and jeers the winners were announced... Olives to Pines Pines to Corks 1st Place Philip Hardie 97 Pts Wallace Forde 89 Pts Brian Scott Wendy Collins (bb9) Valerie Lee Bob Gramson Liz Carver Jan Kirk 2nd Place Michael May 96 Pts Graham Lee 89 Pts Yvonne White Stella Jeffrey Thérèse van Doorn Bernadette Hardie David Pirret Andy Watkins As usual dinner was a noisy affair so clearly the gathering was a social success. For your diaries the next Social Golf is 26th September you ll miss a lot of fun if you don t sign up. Unfortunately, I was not there to jump on the band wagon. Not just for the drinks but for the opportunity to win one of the waterproofs donated by David Markey! Social Golf is really on the up and up! page 6
