The previous best was No. 6 in 2010, when the Horned Frogs went 13-0 and won the Rose Bowl. 4TCU is opening on a Thursday for the first time since 2004, when it defeated Northwestern 48-45 in double overtime in Fort Worth. 4Since 2009, TCU has the nation s fourth-best road record (25-7,.781). PATTERSON VERSUS THE BIG TEN 4With Gary Patterson as head coach, TCU is 4-1 versus Big Ten opponents. 4Prior to last season s 30-7 win over Minnesota, TCU s previous two contests versus Big Ten teams came in bowl games. 4TCU dropped a 17-16 decision to Michigan State in the 2012 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl after defeating Wisconsin, 21-19, in the 2011 Rose Bowl. 4The 2014 game with Minnesota marked TCU s first regular-season meeting with a Big Ten team since a 48-45 double-overtime victory over Northwestern in the 2004 season opener in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs also defeated the Wildcats, 48-24, in Evanston, Ill., in 2002. SEASON OPENERS 4TCU is opening away from home for the 11th time in Gary Patterson s 15 seasons as head coach. The Horned Frogs will have had nine road games, two neutral-site contests (Arlington, Texas) and four home dates in that stretch. 4TCU is 10-4 in season debuts under Patterson and 70-39-9 overall in openers. 4The Horned Frogs have won 10 of their last 12 season openers, including victories over No. 5 Oklahoma in 2005 and No. 22 Oregon State in 2010. SERIES HISTORY 4TCU and Minnesota are meeting for just the third time on the gridrion. 4Prior to last season s 30-7 TCU win, the only previous gridiron contest between the Horned Frogs and Golden Gophers was a 9-7 Minnesota win in Minneapolis in 1974. FRIENDS 4TCU head coach Gary Patterson (Rozel) and Minnesota s Jerry Kill (Cheney) have a special bond, besides both being Kansas natives. 4When Patterson married his wife Kelsey, Kill was part of the wedding party. JIM WACKER TIES 4Both TCU and Minnesota were coached by Jim Wacker. 4Wacker was the Horned Frogs head coach from 1983-91, before leaving Fort Worth to take the reins of the Golden Gophers (1992-96). 4Wacker s most-successul TCU team was his 1984 Unbeleevable squad that went 8-4 in reaching the Bluebonnet Bowl. REMEMBER ME? 4While at Texas Tech in 2012, TCU co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sonny Cumbie stepped into a play-calling role as interim OC when the Red Raiders totaled 429 yards in a 34-31 win over Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. TCU NOTABLES 4The Horned Frogs are the preseason pick to win the Big 12. The last two times TCU was predicted to win a conference was in 2009 and 2010. In both years, TCU completed an undefeated regular season in reaching the Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl, respectively. 4TCU is 30-3 when taking the field as a top-10 team under Gary Patterson, including a 19-1 mark when in the top 5. 4TCU has the nation s longest-current streaks for scoring at least 30 points (15 games), consecutive games with a sack and interception (15), games with a pick (15) and consecutive contests with a takeaway (25). 4Trevone Boykin became just the third quarterback since 2009 to average at least 300 yards per game passing (300.1) and 50 rushing (54.4). The others were Heisman Trophy winners Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel. 4TCU is the only school in the nation without a linebacker who has started a collegiate game. 1 I 2014 TCU FOOTBALL

CARTER STADIUM FORT WORTH, TEXAS FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Josh Doctson had two first-half touchdown receptions and TCU s defense smothered Minnesota s run-oriented attack for a 30-7 win. TCU (2-0) forced five turnovers and held Minnesota (2-1) to 99 yards rushing - 134 below its average. Doctson had a leaping grab with his right hand for a 7-yard score that increased TCU s lead to 17-0 early in the second quarter. Trevone Boykin was 27 of 46 for 258 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 12 times for 92 yards. Doctson opened the scoring with a 13-yard over-the-shoulder catch. He finished with six catches for 64 yards. TCU s newly-installed up-tempo offense wasted little time adding points on the scoreboard. Only one of the Horned Frogs six scoring drives took longer than 2 minutes. TCU scored on its first two possessions. After Doctson s first touchdown catch, the Horned Frogs followed Minnesota s second consecutive three-and-out with the first of Jaden Oberkrom s three field goals, from 46 yards. He led TCU to back-to-back BCS appearances in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, including a 2011 Rose Bowl championship. Patterson has produced at least 10 wins in nine of the last 13 years, including eight seasons of 11 or more victories. He has helped lead the Horned Frogs to eight conference titles and 15 bowl games in 17 years. In 14 seasons as TCU s head coach, Patterson has had 36 players drafted with 82 in NFL camps.
