Last week, the Chiefs lost a 16-13 overtime thriller vs. Oakland (12/24). The Raiders booted a 36-yard fi eld on the opening drive of the extra stanza for the winning margin as the Chiefs were never able to touch the ball. Meanwhile, Denver lost 40-14 at Buffalo (12/24), its secondconsecutive setback. The Broncos remain alive in the playoff hunt and need a win or a Oakland loss to advance to the postseason. QB Kyle Orton threw for 300 yards last Saturday vs. Oakland, including leading the team down the fi eld in the fi nal 2:57 of the fourth quarter for the tying score. He threw a three-yard touchdown pass to WR Dwayne Bowe with 1:04 remaining to tie the score. The Chiefs defense got a pair of interceptions off Oakland QB Carson Palmer as CB Javier Arenas and LB Derrick Johnson each victimized the Raiders quarterback. The Chiefs defense has been one of the best in the NFL since the calender turned to the month of the December. The club ranks in top 10 in multiple defensive categories for all games played in the month of December. Kansas City allowed 279.5 total net yards per game in the fi nal month of the year to rank third in the AFC and fourth in the NFL. The club s pass defense has been particularly stringent, permitting only 173.3 passing yards per game in December to stand second in the AFC and fourth in the NFL. The Chiefs defense has permitted only 17.5 points per game in December, tying for the sixth-fewest total in the NFL during that timeframe. On the season, Kansas City ranks ninth in the NFL by allowing 211.4 passing ypg. That Chiefs are on pace to permit their fewest air yards since allowing 188.9 passing ypg in 2007. The team s defensive unit has intercepted 19 passes in 2011, tying for the sixth-highest total in the NFL. LB Tamba Hali has produced 12.0 sacks. He trails only Baltimore LB Terrell Suggs (13.0) in the AFC and is eighth in the NFL. Hali looks to become the fi rst player in Chiefs history to lead the AFC in sacks in backto-back years. He is one of four players in club annals to record 10.0 or more sacks in back-to-back years. LB Derrick Johnson has produced 172 tackles, the highest seasonal total in Kansas City history. 2011 CHIEFS TEAM STATS AND RANKINGS THE SERIES Kansas City holds a 55-48-0 (.534) all-time advantage over Denver in the 103 previous meetings between the two clubs (102 regular season, one postseason). The 55 Chiefs wins against the Broncos ties for the club s highest win total against any individual opponent as the Chiefs have also beaten AFC West foe Oakland 55 times. The Broncos hold a 19-33-0 (.365) advantage in games played in Denver. The clubs have met at three different stadiums in Denver with the Broncos holding leads at Mile High Stadium (24-17) and at Sports Authority Field at Mile High (9-1). Kansas City won the lone matchup between the two clubs at University of Denver Stadium. Kansas City is 3-3 (.500) in its last six regular season fi nales. In 2009, the Chiefs posted a 44-24 victory at Denver (1/3/10) in the last game of the regular season. The club used that momentum to post a 10-6 (.625) mark in 2010 and win the AFC West Championship. Kansas City has scored 35 or more points in its last three wins on the fi nal day of the regular season dating back to 2005. The club used two of those victories on the fi nal day of the regular season to advance to the postseason the following season. So far in 2011, nine of the 12 playoff spots have been secured. The winners of the AFC West and NFC East along with a wild card team from the AFC are the only three spots yet to be determined. Out of those nine teams who have already claimed a playoff spot, eight of those clubs won their fi nal contest of the 2010 season. The only team to drop its fi nal game a year ago was New Orleans who lost 23-13 vs. Tampa Bay (1/2/11). PUNT RETURNS AND PUNT COVERAGE Kansas City s punt return unit has continued to help the Chiefs gain an advantage in fi eld position. The club is averaging 12.1 yards per punt return in 2011 to rank third in the AFC and sixth in the NFL. The unit is led by CB Javier Arenas who leads the AFC and is third in the NFL with a 13.4-yard punt return average. Only Chicago WR Devin Hester (17.3) and Arizona CB Patrick Peterson (15.9) have a better average. Both of those players have each returned two or more punts for a TD this year. Prior to last weekend s contests, Arenas was tied for fi rst in the NFL with six broken tackles on his punt returns. Denver is averaging 12.7 yards per punt return to rank fourth in the NFL. The Chiefs have been able to pin opponents deep on punts forcing the opposing offenses to drive the length of the fi eld. P Dustin Colquitt has helped the Chiefs punt coverage team to force 23 fair catches to tie for sixth in the NFL. Colquitt is fi fth in the AFC and eighth in the NFL with a 40.0 net average on his punts. He has landed 23 punts inside the 20 to tie for sixth in the AFC. Since entering the NFL as a third-round draft choice in 2005, Colquitt has placed 201 punts inside the 20-yard line, the highest total in the NFL during that timeframe. Colquitt has a 38.86 net punting average for his career, the best average in the NFL dating back to 70. His 38.86 punting average ranks fi rst in Chiefs history. He has posted a 39.99 net average this season, the thirdhighest single-season total in Chiefs history. PROTECTING THE FOOTBALL Kansas City has forced 24 turnovers in 2011, ranking 15th in the NFL. Kansas City has been opportunistic in taking the ball away from opposing quarterbacks. The club has intercepted 19 passes through the fi rst 15 games of the season. That total is tied for sixth in the NFL. Kansas City is third in the NFL with a 4.4 interception percentage on defense. The Chiefs are on pace to intercept 20 passes, which would be the most since the club picked off 25 passes in 2003. Kansas City has intercepted two or more passes in fi ve games. Denver has turned the ball over 28 times to rank 26th in the NFL. The Broncos have fumbled the ball 28 times to tie Miami for the most in the league. Denver has lost 15 of those fumbles, tying for the second-most fumbles lost in the league. Only the N.Y. Jets (16) have lost more. The club has thrown 13 interceptions for tie for 19th in the NFL. QB Tim Tebow threw a career-high four INTs last week at Buffalo (12/24), including two that were returned for touchdowns. He has also lost four fumbles, tying for the ninth most in the NFL. He has fumbled the ball 11 total times to tie for the third-highest mark in the NFL. Only Miami QB Matt Moore (14) and Jacksonville QB Blaine Gabbert (13) have fumbled more. In 2011, Tebow has committed 10 turnovers to lead Denver. TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL Dating back to 2009, Kansas City is 11-8 (.579) when producing a positive turnover differential. The Chiefs are 6-5 (.545) away from Arrowhead over that same timeframe with a positive turnover margin. In 2011, Kansas City is 3-1 (.750) overall with a positive turnover margin and 2-1 (.667) on the road. Denver is 12-6 (.667) with a positive turnover ratio dating back to 2009, including a 6-3 (.667) mark at home. The Broncos are 3-18 (.143) when compiling a negative turnover ratio dating back to 2009. When negative at home, Denver is 3-10 (.231). THE LAST GAME Raiders 16, Chiefs 13 OT December 24, 2011 Arrowhead Stadium 70,803 OAKLAND................3 0 7 3 3 16 KANSAS CITY.............3 0 3 7 0 13 In a close AFC West battle, the Kansas City Chiefs fell 16-13 in overtime to the Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. K Sebastian Janikowski made a 36-yard field goal in the extra period to give the Raiders the win. The Chiefs had previously tied the game on a touchdown pass from QB Kyle Orton to WR Dwayne Bowe with 1:02 left in regulation. On the first offensive play of overtime, QB Carson Palmer found WR Darrius Heyward-Bey on a 53-yard completion that set up Janikowski s field goal. Oakland took an early 3-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by Janikowski. The score was set up by a 91-yard return from CB Bryan McCann on the game s opening kickoff. The Chiefs defense allowed just four yards on the subsequent three plays. RB Thomas Jones broke free for a 22-yard run before the offense stalled and P Dustin Colquitt booted a 54-yard punt that was downed at the Oakland three-yard line. On the ensuing possession, LB Derrick Johnson intercepted a Palmer pass and returned it 17 yards to the Oakland 36-yard line. DL Allen Bailey and LB Tamba Hali pressured Palmer on the pass. K Ryan Succop tied the score at 3-3 with a 23-yard field goal, his 22nd-consecutive made field goal, which tied a franchise record previously set by K Pete Stoyanovich in '97-98. The scoring drive covered nine plays and 31 yards in 4:58. Janikowski s 58-yard field goal attempt hit the crossbar and bounced back with 6:33 left in the first half, keeping the scored tied. With 2:51 remaining in the second quarter, Orton was intercepted by S Matt Giordano three yards deep in the end zone, and he then returned the pick 62 yards to the Kansas City 41-yard line. Three plays later, CB Javier Arenas picked off a Palmer pass right before the two-minute warning. Succop s 49-yard FG attempt on the final play of the first half was blocked, leaving the score deadlocked. Palmer connected with WR Denarius Moore on a 61-yard touchdown pass with 8:52 left in the third quarter to pull Oakland ahead 10-3. The scoring drive covered seven plays and 79 yards in 3:55. Succop cut the lead to 10-6 with a 20-yard field goal with 3:30 left in the third quarter. The Chiefs drove 78 yards on nine plays in 5:22. The big play came when Orton found WR Terrance Copper on a 43-yard pass down the middle of the field. On the first drive of the fourth quarter, Orton was intercepted by Stanford Routt at the Oakland 23-yard line. The Raiders stopped the Chiefs on fourth-and-1 at the Kansas City 43-yard line to stall a drive with under eight minutes left in the game. Janikowski increased the lead to 13-6 with a 31-yard field goal with 2:57 left in regulation. The drive lasted eight plays in 30 yards in 4:48. On the ensuing drive, Orton drove the Chiefs down the field to tie the score at 13-13 with 1:02 left in regulation on a three-yard touchdown pass Bowe, marking Orton s first TD pass as a member of the Chiefs. One play earlier, Orton found RB Dexter McCluster on a 49-yard screen pass down to the Oakland three-yard line. Following a three-and-out by the Chiefs defense, Orton completed a 25-yard pass to Bowe and then an 11-yard pass to Copper down to the Raiders 31-yard line, setting up a field goal attempt on the last play of regulation. Succop s 49-yard field goal attempt was then blocked, forcing overtime. After Palmer connected with Heyward-Bey on the first play of the extra period, RB Michael Bush ran twice before Janikowski came on to score the game s deciding points.
