Did you know? Georgia has one of the most pedestrian-friendly crosswalk laws in the United States.
What is a crosswalk? v A. that part of a roadway included within the connections of the lateral lines of the sidewalks on opposite sides of the highway measured from the curbs or in the absence of curbs, from the edges of the traversable highway; or B. any portion of a roadway... distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings on the surface.
Translation: Crosswalks exist on all four corners of most intersections, regardless of whether or not they are marked by painted lines.
Most crosswalks are at locations without traffic signals, like this one.
Georgia s Crosswalk Law 40-6-91(a) The driver of a vehicle shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching and is within one lane of the half of the roadway on which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning. For the purposes of this subsection, half of the roadway means all traffic lanes carrying traffic in one direction of travel.
Translation: STOP for a pedestrian in a crosswalk on your side of the road. STOP for a pedestrian approaching and within one lane of your side of the road. STOP

What about one-way streets?
On one-way streets, drivers in all lanes must stop and stay stopped as soon as a pedestrian steps into an unsignalized crosswalk.
Whenever any vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk, drivers approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such vehicle.
Before turning right on red, drivers must come to a full and complete stop before the stop bar or crosswalk.
Before turning right on red, you must look to your passenger side. A pedestrian might be walking in front of your car. Drivers must stay stopped to allow pedestrians to cross.
These right-turning drivers are endangering pedestrians, and breaking the law.
Drivers shall yield the right of way to any blind person who is carrying a white walking cane tipped with red or who is accompanied by a guide dog.
Aside from the rules, remember: You re a pedestrian too.
Don t intimidate pedestrians with your car. A little courtesy goes a long way.
Speed matters.
Children are impulsive. What if this girl suddenly ran out in front of you? Could you stop? Would you hit her? Would she live? It all depends on your speed.
Hit at 20 mph Hit at 40 mph 95% chance of living 85% chance of dying
Drivers, you are largely responsible for pedestrians safety. Watch for them. Stop for them. Slow down for them.
