NRA Assembly/ Disassembly Guides Practical Exercise This sneak preview of your study material has been prepared in advance of the book's actual online release.

1 NRA Assembly/Disassembly Guides Practical Exercise INTRODUCTION Almost all types of gun work require some amount of disassembly. With your knowledge of basic firearms operation, common sense, your mechanical ability, and a little patience, you should be able to disassemble, and just as importantly, re-assemble just about any popular firearm. The National Rifle Association (NRA) probably produces the most popular disassembly/assembly guide. We provide two such books, Firearms Assembly The NRA Guide to Rifles and Shotguns and Firearms Assembly The NRA Guide to Pistols and Revolvers, as part of your program. These books provide basic, illustrated disassembly instructions for almost 300 of the most popular firearms. Besides the important technical information they contain, there are numerous fascinating stories about the people whose ideas and innovations shaped the firearms field as we know it today. We based the examination at the end of this practical exercise on the NRA guides. Completing the exam will help you become more familiar with the NRA guides. You ll find the information you need to answer the exam questions in the guides. The library of almost every successful firearms professional contains the NRA books. Gunsmiths refer to these books often. SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES Now that you re approaching the end of your gunsmith program, you probably understand that you re just beginning your professional education. The firearms industry is a dynamic one, and it s constantly changing. The successful gunsmith knows that he or she can t afford to stop learning. There will always be new products introduced. There will always be new shooting trends and styles to explore. Your knowledge of new products, trends, and styles will affect your sales and services and therefore your business. We re going to discuss a few methods that you can use to enhance your professional knowledge and keep one step ahead of the competition.

2 NRA Assembly/Disassembly Guides Practical Exercise Activity 1: Attend Gun Shows Gun shows have been an American tradition for more than 50 years. Originally, gun collectors brought out their collections to show fellow collectors. This usually led to some good old-fashioned horse trading. Most collectors would rather trade for another gun to add to their collection than sell a gun outright. Soon, the collectors formed clubs and invited the general public to their meetings. Eventually gun shows evolved into large displays of modern guns, ammunition, and general shooting merchandise, as well as historical and collectible treasures. Many shooters and gun buffs go to gun shows just to look around or to look for a bargain. The wise gunsmith will go to a gun show to observe and learn. Finding Out about Gun Shows Here is a list of ways you can find information about where the gun shows are held. Gun shops. Many shops will know locations and dates of gun shows. Word of mouth. Anywhere shooters congregate, they often discuss where they attend gun shows. Specialized publications. Shotgun News, The Gun List, and The Gun Show Calendar, all list a schedule of gun shows. Gun magazines. The American Rifleman and The American Hunter are two magazines that list gun shows. Visiting a Gun Show After you find out where the gun shows are, visit the ones you can. With many used guns offered for sale, you ll get a good idea of their real (not just book) value. You ll see rare and unusual guns that you didn t even know existed. Keep notes about the unusual or rare guns that you see. You ll meet people who are experts in their field of collecting. They may become a good resource for research on guns that you may come across. You ll be surprised by the condition of some of the very old guns that you ll find. Some will be in almost new condition and may even have the original factory box. Gun shows can be a valuable resource for information, gun parts, guns and ammo, as well as being a good time.

NRA Assembly/Disassembly Guides Practical Exercise 3 Analyzing the Shows You can take the extra step and not only attend gun shows, but also analyze the shows that you attend. You can ask yourself the following questions. Is it a collector s show? Does the show have a theme? That is, do you see mostly Civil War guns and accoutrements? World War II guns and accessories? Winchesters? Colts? Rugers? Is it a general gun show? What are the prices on popular used guns? What military surplus guns are available? What are the current prices? What military surplus ammo is available? Are there any parts dealers present at the show? Are any dealers having a close-out on any products that you can use in your shop? Activity 2: Visit Shooting Ranges You visit shooting ranges for the same reason you engage in many of the other activities that we suggest to learn. To find out about shooting clubs, inquire at your local game commission, gun shops, gun shows, or in the Yellow Pages. Following is a list of the popular trends you can explore in local gun sports. Sporting clays Metallic silhouettes Cowboy action shooting PPC (Practical Police Combat) IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) NRA action shooting Bulls-eye Civilian Marksmanship Program, formerly called DCM (Director of Civilian Marksmanship) program Small bore

4 NRA Assembly/Disassembly Guides Practical Exercise International styles Various types of shooting leagues Find out what guns, equipment, and accessories are in demand for the sports listed above. Explore the idea of catering to one or more of these shooting specialties. Activity 3: Community Service A good place to start your inquiries about how you can best serve your community is by contacting the National Rifle Association. Contact your NRA state representative. Talk with local NRA-affiliated shooting organizations. Speak to local NRA-affiliated collector s organizations. Plan or attend local events such as Friend s of the NRA dinners. Another way to serve your community is to get involved with safety training. Contact your state s Fish and Game Commission for information on sponsoring Hunter Safety courses. Find out how to become a hunter safety instructor. Sponsor the NRA s Eddie Eagle gun safety program in your area schools.
