Idaho is 2-2 all-time in games played at Northridge. The last time Idaho played there was in 2005, when the Matadors won 67-63 in Idaho s final season in the Big West. Idaho won last year s game in Moscow, 78-75. THE MATADORS CSUN is 3-3 on the year, with wins over Texas State, Coastal Carolina and Cal State Bakersfield and losses to Purdue, TCU and Western Kentucky. The Matadors average 73.0 points per game and allow 77.5. They shoot an efficient.446 from the field and.315 from 3-point range, while opponents are hitting at a.416 clip overall.349 from long range. CSUN is outrebounded by a 40.5-38.8 margin on average. The Matadors average just 11.8 turnovers per game and 20.5 turnovers. Senior guard/forward Kenny Daniels leads the team with 16.5 points per game on.525 shooting, while senior forward Willie Galick hits.581 from the field and averages 12.2 points. Junior forward Lenny Daniel leads the team with a 6.3 rebounding average. Head coach Bobby Braswell is in his 14th year at the helm of the program. He holds a 207-184 career record. FUN FACTS These two teams met last year in the ESPN BracketBuster game. Eight of the nine games between these two teams have been decided by single-digit points. If Idaho wins, it will go 3-0 this year against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams. The team s 4-1 start to the season is its best since 1988-89, when the team also started 4-1 before finishing 25-6, winning the Big Sky regular season and tournament titles and advancing to the NCAA Tournament against UNLV. A Long-Range Streak Idaho has made at least one 3-point field goal in 348 consecutive games. The last time Idaho failed to record a 3-pointer was Feb. 27, 1997 vs. Long Beach State. The streak includes 2,038 made 3-pointers and includes 131 games of seven or more made 3-point shots. He s on Fire! Senior guard Steffan Johnson nailed his first five 3-point field goal attempts against Eastern Washington on Nov. 28, and finished the game 6-of-7 (.875) from beyond the arc. That long-range performance is the best in the WAC so far this year, and the third-best single-game performance in Idaho school history. The six made 3-pointers are also tied for third-most all-time by an Idaho player. Taking Care of the Dishes In his first two games this year, senior Mac Hopson had just five assists and 10 turnovers. He has been closer to usual Hopson form lately, with 20 assists and nine turnovers since then. Last season, he ranked 58th in the NCAA with a 2.02 assist-to-turnover ratio. An Impressive Balancing Act While the Vandals have the WAC s third-rated offense at 78.2 points per game, only one Idaho player has cracked the top 15 in the conference in scoring and it s Steffan Johnson at No. 11 (14.8/gm). Through five games this year, three Vandals, Johnson, Mac Hopson and Luiz Toledo, are averaging double-digit points, while two more, Kashif Watson and Marvin Jefferson are nearly there at 9.0 and 8.0 per game, respectively. So far this year, seven Vandals have already scored double-digit points in a game. Working on the Boards Last year, Idaho averaged a meager 30.4 rebounds per game, a total that rated dead-last in the WAC. So far this season, the Vandals are grabbing an average of 38.2 boards through four contests to rate third among WAC squads. Owning the Perimeter Idaho entered the season with a highly-touted back court, and so far, it has not disappointed offensively or defensively. So far this year, Idaho rates first in the WAC and 13th in the NCAA with a.446 percentage from 3-point range, while allowing its opponents to just a.307 clip from long range to rate second in the conference. Playing the Percentages Idaho ranks first in the WAC in field goal percentage (.489) and second in field goal percentage defense (.389). It should come as no surprise, then, that Idaho rates third in the conference with a +9.6 scoring margin through five games. So far this year, nine of the team s 12 active players are shooting better than.400 from the field, while sophomore Luiz Toledo leads the team and ranks second in the WAC with a.731 field goal percentage. Proving the Preseason Hype Idaho senior guards Mac Hopson (First-Team All-WAC) and Steffan Johnson (Newcomer of the Year) were given strong preseason accolades by both the coaches and the media this year. Both have done plenty to back that up. So far this year, Hopson rates third in the WAC in assists per game (5.00), while Johnson is tied for seventh (3.60). The duo s combined 8.60 assists per game give Idaho the best 1-2 backcourt punch in the WAC so far this year. Johnson s 1.80 assist-to-turnover ratio rates third in the WAC, while Hopson s 1.32 ratio is seventh. In the scoring

2009-10 Vandal Basketball Notes department, Johnson and Hopson rank 1-2 for Idaho with averages of 14.8 and 12.2, respectively. Throwing a Block Party Marvin Jefferson s leads the WAC with 2.60 blocked shots per game so far this year. What s more, that average also puts him on pace to exceed last year s total of 58, as well as Idaho s school record of 72, by the end of the regular season. Kelvin Smith s single-season blocked shots record has stood since 1982-83. Jefferson has at least one blocked shot in 16 consecutive games, dating back to Feb. 7, 2009, at Hawai`i. A Road Less Traveled Idaho s 94-87 win over Utah gave the Vandals their first season-opening win in a true road game since 2002, when Idaho beat Oregon State 76-73 in Corvallis. Starting Strongly Idaho has held a halftime lead in each of its first four games this season, and has a 4-1 record in those games. The Vandals were 13-2 last season when leading at the break. A Tough Test...Passed Idaho opened its season with two of its first three games against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams. Utah was a No. 5 seed, while North Dakota State was a No. 14 seed. Idaho beat both Utah and North Dakota State on their home floors and started the season 2-1. The WAC is currently 2-3 against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams, with both wins coming from Idaho. The Vandals will try to go 3-0 against 2009 Big Dance teams on Thursday, when they face Cal State Northridge, a No. 15 seed last year. A First-Team First Mac Hopson earned first-team all-wac and all-newcomer team honors last year. He was the first Idaho player to earn top Western Athletic Conference honors and the first to earn first-team all-conference since Gordon Scott during the 1999-2000 season in the Big West. He was also a preseason first-team all-wac pick by both the coaches and the media. High Expectations Idaho finished third in the Western Athletic Conference last season with a 9-7 record. It was the highest finish since the Vandals joined the WAC and the highest conference finish since the 1998-99 team went 11-5 and finished third in the Big West Conference. Idaho s nine wins were also the most conference wins for the team since joining the WAC and were more than the team had earned in its previous three seasons combined (seven). Preseason Honors Idaho was picked to finish fourth in the conference by the coaches and media alike. It was the highest the Vandals have been selected since joining the league in 2005. The media also selected senior guard Steffan Johnson, a transfer from Pacific, as the league s Preseason Newcomer of the Year, while both the media and the coaches picked senior guard Mac Hopson to the preseason all-wac first team. World University Games Sophomore forward Luiz Toledo and senior forward Luciano de Souza represented their home country, Brazil, at the 2009 World University Games at Belgrade, Serbia. The pair helped lead Brazil to a 3-3 record, with wins over Japan, Mexico and United Arab Emirates. De Souza led the team with a 15.2 scoring average, while also pulling down 6.2 rebounds per game. Toledo shot.500 from the floor and averaged 8.0 points and 5.2 rebounds during the tournament. Both players started all six games. National Rankings Idaho had two players end the 2008-09 season ranked in the top 100 in the nation. Mac Hopson finished No. 19 for assists (5.9 apg), and No. 58 for assist/turnover ratio (2.02) while Marvin Jefferson finished No. 58 for blocked shots (1.8 bpg). As a team, Idaho ranked in the top 100 in five categories. The team finished No. 45 for turnovers per game (12.3), No. 69 for assist/turnover ratio (1.09), No. 72 for field-goal percentage (.458), No. 80 for 3-point field goal percentage (.361), and No. 88 for turnover margin (1.2). Attacking the Record Book Mac Hopson ended the 2008-09 season ranked on six Idaho single-season records lists. He ranked second for assists (194), tied for sixth for steals (55), sixth for points (540), seventh for 3-point field goal percentage (.430), seventh for free throws made (128) and seventh for free throw attempts (189). Quick Hits Idaho has scored twice as many fast break points (40) as its opponents (20) this season. In its four wins this year, Idaho averaged 34.5 points in paint. In its one loss, it had just 20. Through five games, Idaho has put together five +10 or more scoring runs this year. Idaho has turned the ball over 83 times this year, but it has only given up 84 points off turnovers. Idaho s season-opening win over Utah was its first win at the Huntsman Center and its first win over Utah since Dec. 27, 1938. Idaho s win at North Dakota State was the team s first win at Fargo. The Vandals had lost their previous three road games at NDSU. Idaho finished the 2008-09 season with an RPI of 135 which was up 164 points from 2007-08. The RPI improvement was fifth-best in the country. With 17 wins last year, Idaho earned its most wins in a season since the 1993-94 team finished 18-10. Quick Facts Location:... One of the unique nicknames in sports, Vandals has been the nickname for University of Idaho athletic teams for more than 80 years. Area sportswriters coined the nickname as they tried to describe the tenacity with which coach Hec Edmundson s basketball teams played defense. It first was used in 1918 strictly for the men s basketball team and officially adopted for all teams in 1921. The sports editor of the school newspaper, Lloyd Jazz McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, made the final push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Norsemen of old.

Quoting Coach Verlin On tough three-game stretch ahead: I think it has an opportunity to build confidence in our basketball team that we can play with good opponents on the road. There can be nothing but positives to come out of these games if we re able to come out and compete every possession for 40 minutes in these next three games. 2009-10 starting line-ups Starting Line-up Record Hopson/Johnson/Toledo/Watson/Jefferson 4-1 On Cal State Northridge: They re going to pressure the holy heck out of you. They ll pressure the ball hard and front the posts, they ll play for steals, jump in passing lanes and try to disrupt you offensively. What they do is run a variety of defenses at you, all pressure-based, and they do a good job of that. It s not really a full-court pressure situation, it s all pressure-based and we ve got to be ready to execute versus their pressure. On #25 Portland: I ve told people all along, this Portland ball club is a good ball club. I ve had many of my coaching friends call me and ask me, Why in the heck did you schedule them twice? Portland doesn t beat themselves, they re big and strong, they ve got a lot of seniors and they re a veteran ball club, like we are. That s going to be a lot of fun on Sunday. His impressions of the team so far this year: I think we ve defended very well. We ve done a great job in field-goal percentage defense from two-point range and three-point range. We have rebounded the ball better (than last year), but I d like for us to rebounded it even better. We ve scored our ball at relatively great ease at times this year, but we just haven t taken care of the ball well enough.
