Buildings Municipal Infrastructure Transportation Industrial Energy TRANSPORTATION ANALYSIS METHODS
7 TRANSPORTATION ANALYSIS METHODS Generation Distribution Mode Share Assignment How many trips will there be? Arena Residential Office Retail Determine person trip rates for each unit of development and apply to growth Where are people coming from? Markham Centre Elsewhere in Markham Toronto Distribute based on population / employment and ease of access How do people get here? Auto (driver or passenger) Transit Walk/Cycle (Active Transp.) Consider existing travel patterns; future transit / road / active networks; policies What routes do people use? Bus / train / bike / ped routes Roads and intersections Choose direct routes, but some trips may shift to less direct routes with lower utilization North? West Markham Centre East South
8 TRANSPORTATION ANALYSIS METHODS Horizon Years Multiple horizon years assessed to determine impact over short-, mid- and long-term 2014 Opening day of MSECC 2021 Buildout of sections of Markham Centre 2031 Substantial buildout of Markham Centre Change Between Horizons Land use, distribution, mode share, assignment all change More transit service = more transit trips and different route choices Higher density + more mixed use = more internal trips Peak Periods for MSECC Used in Analysis 1 hour before event: 6:00pm 7:00pm (during weekday PM peak) 1 hour after event: 9:30pm 10:30pm (off-peak travel demand)
9 TRANSPORTATION ANALYSIS METHODS Car dependence not appropriate in an Urban Growth Centre Walking, cycling and transit more space and time efficient Lane capacity (people per hour): 3,000+ per bus lane (with comfortable loading) 1,000+ per car lane (with typical occupancy) Mixed use district: residential, office, retail, entertainment within walking distance Internal capture : More residents living near work = fewer commuters in/out of area More residents/jobs/shops increases internal capture rate Photo sources: Top: Colouring Viva blue and green, VivaNext blog, posted August 3, 2010 Bottom: Vancouver, BC, taken by GENIVAR, April 2012
