Fixture Reports -Week of 29 th January to 4 th February- Hockey 1 st XI v Hutchesons Grammar School: Cup Match (A) 0-6 The start of the game was positive with aggression in defence and attack. However, soon the quality opposition stepped it up and even though Sean made some magnificent saves to keep us in the game, the opposition were too good to contain. In addition, the marking wasn t tight enough and some careless passes led to unnecessary chances for the opposition. In the second half, our work rate was high but with a lack of composure we couldn t keep possession. In the end, the opposition only scored 6 goals however the score could have been twice that without Sean s man of the match performance. 1 st XI v Loretto (H) 1-9 Although the opposition were a decent quality side, we performed appallingly. Not only was the decision-making and work rate poor around the pitch, but also the attitudes of our players were embarrassing. In addition, our discipline was poor resulting in three cards, which straight away puts us at a disadvantage and resulted in countless goals being conceded. Overall, the match was thoroughly disappointing and is a real wake up call for the team who I hope will bounce back to have a more successful rest of the season. The MVP was Harry M. 2 nd XI v Loretto (H) 4-0 The game got off to a very good start with an early goal from Zak R. Some strong defensive work from Zeyd C and Finlay Y meant Loretto had few shots on goal. Two more goals from Hugh H and Zak R put us 3-0 by half time. The whole team played well and were able to draw from the drills from training. A final goal in the second half by Robert E concluded the match at 4-0. The MVP was Hugh H. 3 rd XI v Merchiston (A) 0-4 It was a decent performance overall. Defensive play could be worked on a lot as people were too quick to dive in. The team need to work on linking between midfield and attack. John R kept very well. This match was frustrating as we should have done a lot better. There was some good play from Robert G. The MVP was John R. 3 rd XI v Loretto (H) 0-1 This was a much better performance. However, attacking play in the first half was very limited. Defending was much better with good channeling, etc. Bob G held the defence together aided by David H. Marcus C played excellently, making many interceptions and tackles. John R kept like an absolute demon again. The MVP was Marcus C.

4 th XI v Loretto (H) 2-2 After a strong win last time around, the all new 4 th XI took to the pitch with a good deal of positivity but were soon two goals down as Loretto s new front line worked out that we defended a high line. Order was soon restored though, and Fettes dominated a good deal of the play. The goals came courtesy of a long ball over the top from Owen C, deftly put away by Finlay M, and a great solo effort from Archie S that nestled in the top corner of the net. The MVP was Finlay M. Colts A XI v Loretto (A) 6-2 The game started off well with a majestic goal from Oliver P followed by a few more goals from Brodie N and Tom S. By half time we were 4-0 up and their goalie had to be taken off due to a powerful shot by Brodie N. They then replaced him with a kicking back and after another goal we decided to take of our goalie who also came on as kicking back. Very good all-round performance from the boys, especially Brodie N who made play and was clinical but not selfish, earning him MVP for the match. Junior Colts A XI v Cargilfield (H) 5-0 In the first half we were passing the ball around nicely with Cameron Welsh creating opportunities for our strikers. We broke through the opposition quickly with great interlinking play between Ben A and Joe W. In the second half, there were some quick goals scored by Adam B and then at full time the score was 6-0. The MVP was Joe W. Lacrosse 1 st XII v Rathbones Scottish Open (A) 2 nd Place The 1 st XII had a great start to the tournament winning the first two matches comfortably against Sedburgh and Loretto 2 nd XII, with some great attacking from Ellie D and Rosie U. Our final pool game against Glenalmond was more challenging however, Finn Galloway held together the defence with her feisty ground balls which meant we could transition the ball in 4 passes to score the winning goal. We played Loretto 1 st XII in the semi-final winning 6-2 as Cleodie K and Jacklyn W s quick reactions to the draw meant that we won the majority which took us straight to the final against Harrogate Ladies College. However, Harrogate s aggressive play put a lot of pressure on our defence, although Abigail W s interceptions and outfield play was remarkable and narrowed the score difference. It was a long, muddy day but we came back happy with Krispy Kreme s and second place. The MVP was Cora S. 2 nd XII v Rathbones Scottish Open (A) 2 nd Place With a rough start against Harrogate Ladies, we were pleased to win against Loretto 2nds and reach the plate finals, where we sadly lost to Sedburgh. We had some good goalkeeping from Charlotte Bird and some great goals by Lara Welch and Iona Cowan. Special mention to Liv Aird and Oliva Burnet for their great work in the midfield. Overall due to her effective passing and skillful manipulation of the game Liv Aird definitely deserves to be named most valuable player. Although we ultimately did not come out with the win that we had wanted, the tournament was really useful in highlighting both our team strengths and what we need to work on before our next games.

U15A XII v St George s (H) 11-9 One of the challenges of this match was that we were less experienced than St George s in indoor lacrosse. Despite this, we still showed determination throughout the match. This was shown when we were down 6-3 to them and made a comeback which led to us winning the match. We were quick to learn the tactics of indoor lacrosse and apply to it. Everyone played extremely well. Abbey R, Jasmine L and Flora A made great runs; great goal-scoring from Olivia M and Isabella S, finally some superb communication from Amaya L. The MVP was the whole team for their dedicated effort in the match. U15A XII v Glenalmond (H) 12-9 At the start, both teams were head to head. But, the win was purely due to our strong defence and great saves from our goalkeeper Honor C-B. Jasmine L and Isabella S made some great runs down the pitch. We have been starting to use the width of the pitch to our advantage and we have also applied new techniques we have learnt in the past training sessions. Despite Glenalmond winning most of the tosses, we still managed to beat them. Many phenomenal goals were scored by Isabella S, Jennifer M, Poppy E, Jasmine L and Zara W. Best player goes to Isabella S. U15C XII v v Glenalmond (H) 12-2 On Saturday the U15C s played against Glenalmond, winning 12-2. It was a great match and we played really well as a team. The attack were very strong, allowing Stella W and Doga A to score many goals and the defence were great at stopping the opposition from scoring. Jamie P was the most valuable player for her excellent play at centre. U14A XII v St George s (A) 14-2 St. George s were a very strong team and had some good defenders however, our team did well to intercept their passes and did some useful defence. We attacked goal well and had some good shots especially from Lulu who did a great goal. Our passes to one another were also good. There were some strong passes, which were good as they resulted in a goal. Overall, they were a strong team and we did well in our passes and had a positive outcome. The MVP was Lulu M for her fast running up the pitch. U14A XII v Glenalmond (H) 14-2 Our game against Glenamound was possibly our hardest game yet because they were a very good team at their tackling, they had some good attempts at goal however, Jess N was excellent in goal and saved some great goals, her help in defence was great as Phoebe M-B helped her a lot (Also MVP). Also thank you to Maria W and Amelia T for coming up from the B s to play for us. Overall, this has been our toughest match so far and we did well as a team to win.

U14B XII v St George s (A) 9-11 We played an indoor 5-a-side lacrosse game away at St George s. Everyone played really well as we had never played 5 a-side before. Amelia T made some great runs down the sideline helping to set up lots of goals. Freya B also made some great passes to Zamara C who received them well and then had some excellent shots on goal. Leila F worked hard in defence saving many goals and making some excellent passes and runs up field. The MVP was Amelia T. U14B XII v Glenalmond (H) 6-5 We played Glenalmond at home on 3/2/17. The match was a very hard game as there team was very good at checking which made it hard for us. When we got our first goal, we knew how to get around them as a team, which was sometimes difficult, but thanks to Delilah P and Kirsty M who were very good at spacing out, we could make our passes. Special mentions go to our goalie, Kira Kotava who was amazing at stopping Glenalmond from scoring and Emma T who stepped up to help our team. She was very good at helping our team reach the goal with her good cradling skills. Our match was a very tough game for us but powering through we managed to win our game 6-5. The MVP s were Kira K and Emma T. U14C XII v Boroughmuir High School (H) Training Match It was a great opportunity to practice and improve the lacrosse skills of both teams. This match wasn t a competitive match, as both schools played in mixed teams, to allow as much game play to take place as possible. The U14C s of Fettes tried their best despite harsh weather conditions and really enjoyed the match whilst gaining experience and the same time. The MVP was Kira K. Netball 1 st VII v Gordonstoun: Cup Match (A) 13-39 The long journey to Gordonstoun meant everyone was feeling a little tired and out of sorts therefore we were off to a bit of a slow start in the first quarter which gave the opposition confidence and continued to break down our game. However, we put the first quarter behind us and started the second quarter with more confidence in our skills and managed to beat them in the second quarter. This put them under more pressure and forced them to play more carefully. The team tried hard to stay under control and boost moral however, the mixture of tiredness and missing a few players meant we weren t able to bring it back. Although we didn t win this match did show us that keeping up team moral really does make such a difference and that we should stay positive in light of the score. The MVP was Honor S.

1 st VII v RGS Newcastle (H) 8-38 RGS Newcastle were a strong opposition for the 1 st VII from the very first whistle. There was clear improvement from quarter to quarter for us which is very promising and we can work on our first quarter play in training to ensure in future games we can play our best right from the start. Sandy F, Charlotte V and Fenella G had a tough time in defence but put up a good fight with many interceptions. Also during this match there was lots of support between players boosting the teams moral. The MVP was Sandy F. 2 nd VII v Kilgraston (A) 14-31 This was a big improvement from our first match. Passing was much smoother and the defence was much more focused and quick. Good effort from everyone and a special mention to India M and Amy W for scoring some great goals. The MVP was India M. 2 nd VII v RGS Newcastle (H) 11-45 The whole team played very well, with Ines H standing out as man of the match. Everyone worked very hard and didn t give up trying, despite RGS scoring multiple goals. Our best quarter was the last quarter, in which we only let them score 7 times. We know what we can work on for our next match and can take a lot of positives away despite the disappointing score. Football 1 st XI v Stewart s Melville College (A) 2-6 This opposition was our toughest challenge yet, with players from Falkirk and the Scotland youth set up in their ranks. Bearing this in mind, we started off very strongly with a fair share of possession in the opening 20 minutess. Unfortunately, some minor slip-ups allowed two goals to creep in before half time. The second half did not start much better as we were overrun in the midfield highlighting our need to work on our defensive shape. However, in the latter stages of the game we showed good attacking strength with positive running from Eniola and George, who grabbed a goal and an assist. In the end it was too little too late, but despite the loss we showed good signs of promise. The MVP was George W. Squash U19 Team v Merchiston (A) 13-3 In the first match of the term, the U19 team performed superbly. With a confident win only dropping three games we definitely played our best. In particular Tommy L played admirably well against his opponent and fought for every point. This performance certainly spells good things for the future matches coming up. The MVP was Tommy L.
