Welcome 2017 Nebraska State Fair Draft Horse Exhibitors Thank you for considering The Nebraska State Fair as a place to exhibit your draft horses. It is because of exhibitors like you that we have continued to improve and grow our show. We are very proud of our State Fair facilities, particularly the Five Points Bank Arena. Some of the highlights of the 2017 Nebraska State Fair include: This year s total premiums are again over $50,000.00 for the Draft Horse events. New classes this year are: Classic Series Cart, Farm Pleasure Cart and Gambler s Choice Youth. Six horse hitches will compete for Double Points in our Classic Series Qualifier Classes. You will hitch your six during two of the three hitch performances. Only fourteen six horse hitch entries will be accepted. The Nebraska Draft Horse & Mule Association will again provide a draft horse exhibitor hospitality booth on Saturday and Sunday. Their booth will be located in the South Stalling Barn. Farm Team classes will show in conjunction with the evening Hitch Classes. Each evening performance will begin with Feed Team races with a final drive off of the top teams from the two preceding performances during the final Sunday afternoon show. The obstacle and timed events will be held Saturday morning in the Five Points Bank Arena. Draft Horse Halter will be held Thursday, August 24 th at 5:00 p.m. The Sunday Hitch Show will again be a Matinee with a start time of 4:00 p.m. We hope this will allow our exhibitors that want to get home Sunday night ample time to load out and get home safely. We are asking that all exhibitors stalled in the Cattle Barn be out by Midnight, August 27. Exhibitors stalled in the Sheep Barn can stay until 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 28 th. The Draft Horse Pull will be on Friday, September 1 st at 6:00 p.m. All entry information for Pullers is located in the section following the Hitch, Halter & Farm Team show details. Draft Horse Hitch, Halter, and Farm Team Show Entry Deadline: July 1 st, 2017 Late entries will be accepted until the barn is full. A late fee of $50 per entry will apply. Entries should be mailed to the address provided. LOAD IN-LOAD OUT 1. Draft Horses will be stalled in the Exhibition Barns adjoining the Five Points Bank Arena. Stalls will be available after 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 23 rd and horses must be stalled by Friday August 25 th at 10:00 a.m. 2. Load in-load out for all Draft Horses will be through Gate 3 off of Stolley Park Rd. 3. Draft Halter horses will be allowed to load out after the halter competition on Thursday. 4. Hitch & Farm Team horses will not be allowed to begin loading out until AFTER the Sunday afternoon performance without prior written permission from the Draft Horse Superintendent. No trailers will be allowed in the barns until the hitch show is over on Sunday. Failure to comply will result in a loss of premiums and any other disciplinary action as desired by the Nebraska State Fair. 5. Draft Horses must be out of the Cattle Barn by Midnight, Sunday, August 27 and the Sheep Barn by 7:00 a.m. Monday, August 28 NO EXCEPTIONS. Any horses that need to stay later than dates noted must relocate in the Racehorse Barns. There is an extremely tight barn cleaning schedule and rules must be followed. REGISTRATION PAPERS No animal may be entered or exhibited as purebred unless the same has been recorded in the recognized books of record for the respective breed. Draft horse exhibitors do not need to send in copies of registration papers for purebred classes. However, in the case of a dispute or questions you should be prepared to show copies if asked to by the Show Secretary. FEED & BEDDING All Feed and Bedding needs will be handled by Mid Nebraska Feeds, which is a local Purina dealer. Hay, bedding and/or feed will be available. You can pre-order feed and bedding by contacting Mid Nebraska Feeds at 308-382-3048.
RULES & REGULATIONS 1. Classes shall be governed by the current rules of the Nebraska State Fair General Livestock Information, Rules and Regulations and the Equine Information, Rules and Regulations. By entering this horse show, you agree to be governed by the above rules as posted on the state fair website: www.statefair.org. The Nebraska State Fair will impose all rules of the IAFE National Code of Show Ring Ethics as outlined in the front of this premium book. 2. All entries for the Nebraska State Fair must be made in the NAME OF THE OWNER OR LESSEE with all horses to be named. If any individual enters an animal in a name other than that of a bona fide owner or attempt to perpetrate a fraud by misrepresenting any fact, the entry shall not be allowed to compete for or receive any premium. In case of question as to the age of an animal, the Superintendent shall appoint an expert whose decision shall be final. Exhibitors are responsible for errors on entries. Entries that have been erroneously entered may, at the discretion of the Superintendent of the department, be transferred to their proper classes previous to the judging. If such classes have been judged they shall not be re-judged. The Nebraska State Fair reserves the right to return any entries received beyond the capacity of the facilities offered. 3. Exhibitors, attendants, and headers must be neatly and properly dressed on entering the show ring. 4. The Draft Horse Show Office will not process any additional class entries less than an hour before the scheduled performance. 5. Hitch Performance: To be judged 40% performance, 40% uniformity of conformation, 20% harness and wagon. 6. The 3 minute gate rule will be enforced. Plan accordingly. 7. The Nebraska State Fair reserves the right to split or cancel classes at their discretion. 8. Youth Exhibitors: Shall be under the age of 18 as of January 1 of the current year. All youth drivers MUST be accompanied by an adult. Eligible youth drivers will not be allowed to compete in youth classes if they choose to compete in Open classes. 9. Halter Class Exhibitors: The Grand Champion Mare, Stallion and Gelding from each breed will come back to compete for Supreme Champion. Supreme Halter Champion will be a result of the collective decision made by both halter judges. 10. Six Horse Hitch entries: This is a double point Classic series qualifier show. You MUST hook the Six for both your division and the Sunday afternoon performance to be eligible for the $1,200 guaranteed premium payback. There will be a limit of 14 Six Horse Hitch s that will be allowed to enter. Entries will be split with half showing Friday and the other half showing Saturday. All Sixes will go in for the Sunday performance. Exhibitor/owner must own at least four of the horses in a six horse hitch. 11. Classic Series Cart Class Entries: Must provide proof of membership. 12. Draft Horse Western Riding Horses to be tacked up in proper western tack and rider attired accordingly. Horses will be asked to walk, trot, and canter, at the
judge s discretion. Horses will work both ways in the arena and will be asked to back. Entry to be judged on the overall picture, including gaits and proper attire. Headset is not critical. Scotch bottom shoes are allowed. Open to all Percheron, Clydesdale, Belgian, and Shire draft horses. 13. Draft Horse English Riding Exhibitor can ride Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, or Dressage with the horse to be tacked accordingly. Horses will be asked to Walk, Trot, and Canter at the judge s discretion. Horses will work both ways in the arena and will be asked to back. Entry judged on the overall picture, including gaits and proper attire. Headset is not critical. Scotch Bottom shoes are allowed. Open to all Percheron, Clydesdale, Belgian, and Shire horses. 14. Farm Team Exhibitors: Farm Team classes are open to any working farm team including Drafts and Draft Crosses consisting of at least 50% Draft Horse. Horses/teams may be entered in the same class twice if they are entered properly through the show office and must have a different driver and different number. No farm machinery or equipment. All vehicles should be safe and sound for driving in a public setting. Course patterns and additional rules will be included in all exhibitor packets and/or discussed at the drivers meeting prior to the show. The Farm Pleasure Cart Class must use a 2-wheel show cart (no forecarts allowed). 15. Your mail in entries should go to: Draft Horse Entries, Attn: Sandy Spiehs Nebraska State Fair PO Box 1387 Grand Island, NE 68802 HEALTH REQUIREMENTS All owners, trainers, or exhibitors of equines, whether for exhibit or any type of demonstration or performance on the Nebraska State Fairgrounds, will be required to provide the Equine Veterinarian with the following Paperwork. 1. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection(CVI) CVI s are valid for 30 days a. Both IN-State and OUT-of-State Equines will require the same paperwork and testing b. NOTICE: CVI Health Papers MUST State Destination as: Nebraska State Fair c. All animals exhibited must be accompanied by a CVI. d. All animals exhibited shall be individually identified on the CVI e. CVI s must list the respective exhibition as consignee. f. CVI s will be returned to exhibitors after a copy has been made at the Check-In Trailer. g. You may not use Health Papers issued for another event or destination to gain entry onto The Nebraska State Fairgrounds. If Equine Health Papers do not state Nebraska State Fair as the destination, the Equine Veterinarian is required to issue you new Health Papers. The fees for the exam and issue of Health Papers will need to be paid immediately to examining veterinarian.
h. If no health certificate (CVI) is shown, exhibitors may go get a health certificate from their veterinarian or have the veterinarian on site issue new ones. All Veterinarian Fees are at the discretion of the veterinarian on duty and are required to be paid at the time of service. All exhibitors without correct Health Papers will be held at the Check-In Trailer. 2. A negative test of EIA (Coggins) within 365 days of entry for all horses. a. Note: Foals under six months of age are exempt from EIA testing requirements only if they are not weaned. b. If no Coggins papers are shown, exhibitors will be denied entry onto the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. 3. NOTICE: Due to the increase in EHV-1 (Rhino) cases, the Nebraska State Fair is requiring ALL horses that enter the grounds be vaccinated for EHV-1 no more than FOUR months (120 days) prior to the start of the Fair. The date of vaccination needs to be written on the CVI. It is also recommended that exhibition horses be vaccinated for equine influenza. 4. Vesicular Stomatitis Virus: Since the chances of the reoccurrence of Vesicular Stomatitis are rather high this year, please keep checking for updates on the State Fair website: www.statefair.org. In the event that VS is detected in Nebraska or any other state, those animals being exhibited from those states or areas will be required to have a CVI issued within 48 hours of arriving at the Nebraska State Fair. 5. Please refer to the 2017 Equine and Equine Event Livestock Health Requirements Link. (Five Points Bank Arena) Grand Entry-National Anthem Draft Horse Feed Team Races Finals (Division winners) Draft Horse Classic Cart Series Draft Horse Team Jr Driver on a Hitch Wagon Draft Horse Farm Team Ladies Break for Arena Maintenance Classic Series 6 Horse Hitch Finals (All 14 Hitches compete) Friday September 1-6:00 P.M Draft Horse Pull - (Five Points Bank Arena) Weigh in starts at 2:00 p.m. and concludes at 5:00 p.m. Please contact Terry Pierce at 402-980-0715 with any Horse Pull questions. 1. A total of $5,000 will be paid out on a percentage basis for lightweight and heavyweight divisions. In addition, each trailer will receive a $150 fuel certificate. (This is per vehicle not per team.) 2. Pulling horses can stall at no charge in the Racehorse Barns. 3. This will be a split-overweight pull. 4. Show staff, the driver and helpers with each team are the only ones allowed in the arena during the pulling competition. 5. Entry fees are $25.00 per team and due at weigh in. 6. Pull is 27 6 Three trials to pull the distance. *No adding pulls together. 7. Ropes are 16 apart. 8. You may unhitch after each trial. 9. Three times away is a trial. *If sled moves, it is a trial. 10. No hitchers in front of Driver. 11. Only one driver. You many have someone bring your team to the load, however; you may trail lines until Pull is done. 12. Unruly teams will be asked to park. 13. No heading of horses. 14. No touching of horses while hooked to sled unless a breakdown happens. 15. No tying horses together. 16. There will be a meeting of drivers after weigh in is completed. 17. All teams go to the arena together and return together. 18. We will haul your eveners to and from the arena for you. 19. All Pulling horses must also comply with Health Requirements listed in the front of the Equine Rules and Regulations Book. Pulling horses will be randomly blood tested based
on the decision of the Show Management. If a positive test is found, the team will be disqualified. If a team is disqualified, the remaining teams will be moved up in placing.
