the Rip 26 January 2017 Happy Australia Day! Well this is the big one folks The 2017 SLSWA SunSmart Country Carnival is finally upon us. After months of preparation, we now get to show the rest of the state how well we come together to put on a show like this. We have around 80 volunteers which is pretty amazing for a relatively small club but often that s exactly the way it works thank you so much to everyone who put their hand up to help and especially the Team Leaders who are looking after each section of the event. Our efforts in marketing and promotion along with help from SLSWA, the City of Albany, the Albany Advertiser and ABC have really pushed all aspects of the event from the movie night, open water swim, surf boat carnival as well as the beach and water events. This has resulted in more than 650 competitors registering from 22 surf clubs across WA. In addition, we have those entering the swim on Saturday morning we expect well over 100 for that. A great boost to Albany and a terrific showcase of our wonderful club. From our own point of view we have 86 competitors registered which I think is fantastic. Remember, just because we are the host club, doesn t mean we can t win! Good sportsmanship always but go hard, give it your best and have fun! The Country Carnival is always a fairly relaxed event and a great opportunity to make new friends and catch up with old ones, so don t be scared to say G day to our visitors and have a chat they are part of Surf Club for the same reasons you are. Anyway, it s been a big lead up and many of us are looking forward to it actually getting underway (and eventually finishing). See you down the club pretty much from now until Sunday afternoon! I know we will put on a terrific carnival! SORRY Australia Day 2017 We are very fortunate to be living in a country so beautiful and today we celebrate the beginning of a great nation. We were fortunate to be witness to over 30 new Australians who received their Aussie citizenship this morning, it was a lovely morning and it was clear that those receiving their citizenship are so proud to call Albany home. We are also so very proud of our nominees for awards: Casey Willmore Youth Citizen of the year & Celia Waugh & Rob Mason Citizen of the year WINNER - Community Group or Event Award ALBANY SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Thank you to the City of Albany for a lovely morning and a wonderful start to Australia Day.

Nippers GOOD LUCK ALL NIPPERS!!!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR NIPPERS COMPETING IN THE COUNTRY CARNIVAL. MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN TRAINING HARD ALL SEASON AND ARE NOW ITCHING TO PUT YOUR SKILLS AND FITNESS TO THE TEST. A SPECIAL GOODLUCK TO THOSE NIPPERS WHO ARE COMPETING IN THEIR VERY FIRST CARNIVAL, TAKE THE TIME TO ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE. PARENTS AND COMPETITORS WITH CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE PLEASE MAKE THESE GUYS FEEL AT HOME IN THE CLUB TENT. LASTLY A HUGE THANKYOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED GET THESE KIDS READY FOR COMPETITION. TO THE MUMS AND DADS FOR COMMITTING TO REGULAR TRAINING, THE EVER PRESENT WATER SAFETY AND OF COURSE OUR FABULOUS COACHES. LASTLY, TO OUR 47 NIPPERS WHO HAVE ENTERED. HAVE A GREAT CARNIVAL-WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU ALL. GO HARD-PLAY FAIR-HAVE FUN! Carnival Info For some of you it will be your first carnival so here are some bits and pieces to get you started. 1. Download the programme from the RIP and print it off. 2. You will need a competition cap and club bathers and high vis vest (pink or yellow) if doing water events. If you don t have club bathers plain black bathers can be worn. 3. You will be allocated a competitor number. This will be written on your hand. Your age group will go on your arm. 4. On the carnival day (Sat or Sun) find the ASLSC competitor tent. Stay with you team in the tent. An AGM will be allocated to each event. They will help you through the events and let you know when to marshal. If they don t know where you are you may miss your event. 5. When marshaling for events competitors need to wear a sunsmart shirt and cap. The surf club white shirts are perfect for this. 6. Bring plenty of snacks, water and sunscreen for the day. Bring warm gear in case of a change of weather. 7. If you are using a club board be aware that other competitors in different races may also be using it. Please look after it as your own, turn it upside down when not in use. 8. If your child is competing in an iron man event they will need a handler for their board. Handlers need to wear a competition cap. It is my strong preference that only adults or cadets fill this role. If you haven t done this before, please let me know. 9. If you are a parent that holds a Bronze Medallion, please come prepared to fill any holes in the water safety roster. 10. Parents are not permitted inside the arenas.

Always remember you are representing your club-and we are the host club. It is expected that competitors and parents will at all times display respect to carnival officials and good sportsmanship amongst their fellow competitors. If there is a problem see your team manager. They will act on your behalf. Please contact me by phone or email if you have any concerns or questions regarding this carnival. chrisficko@me.com 0409 292 263 YUMMY CAKES REQUIRED FOR THE CANTEEN FOR THE WEEKEND please no muffins. Perth - Country Club Champs - Feb 25 at Mullaloo Beach This weekend is one of our target Carnivals and will be here before we know it. Last Year it was at Secret Harbour- and Albany bought home the Handicap Shield. So this year we have a title to defend. The Country Club Champs is a fantastic Carnival, which sees ONLY the Country Clubs compete. It is also our only qualifier event for the Junior and Senior State Champs held in the subsequent weeks. Due to its proximity to Mullaloo beach and ease of accommodation, as in previous years, many clubbies have secured accommodation at Karrinyup Waters Resort. The Club has pre booked 5 cabins. Each cabin sleeps 4 people. The cabins are booked for 3 nights, arriving Fri 24 Feb. These Cabins are now available to request. First in best dressed. Any cabins not reserved by end of Jan will be forfeited. Contact finance@albanysurfclub.com.au if you would like to book one of these cabins. Payment will secure your booking. CADET CAMP The 2017 Cadet Camp is set for Friday Feb 3 Sunday Feb 5 th at Camp Quaranup This year s camp is set to be action packed, challenging and fun. It is open to all Albany Cadets & U14 s. The camp is almost full get in quick. Applications close Friday January 27th. Contact Carl carl.richardson@westnet.com.au or 0429 920 268 for further information, registration forms. Thank you. Carl

This will allow us to host more social functions and to have the bar open to sell drinks when we have events like the Country Carnival and Surf Craft Challenge. We will be calling a Special Meeting of the club to alter our constitution very soon to take into account the licence plus a few other small changes we wish to make so look out for the notice. Please look at the documents attached to this Rip for your information. Summary of important things to note: Approved Trading hours ASLSC Operating hours - Fri and Sat 11am to midnight & Sun 11am to 10pm Friday evenings + events and functions - we will post in Rip when its open but the aim is to be open most Friday evenings subject to availability of volunteer bar staff generally 5.30pm onwards

As usual, being a volunteer run club its our willing members that have got their Approved Manager or RSA qualifications that has allowed this to come to fruition. If you think you can help, let us know. No one at this stage. We are keen to find a willing Social Coordinator who can take the pressure of the usual people and organise Fridays with food from time to time and coordinate fundraisers like last Friday night not to run them, just coordinate them. Again, if keen, let us know. All normal licencing rules apply such as not serving intoxicated people, not serving under 18 s, asking for I.D. where appropriate, providing water, etc. Please respect our bar facility the same as the whole club and help us make this a good thing for the club where we can socialise in a safe and friendly family environment and make a few dollars for the club along the way.
