GAS SEPARATION PRINCIPLE Gas separation principle The operation of membrane systems is based on the principle of differential permeation rate of gas components through membrane substance. The driving force of the gas separation process is the difference in partial pressures on the membrane surfaces. Since the beginning of commercial utilization of the membrane gas separation technology, the membrane performance has been continuously improved. The modern gas separation membrane used by Grasys is made of high-efficient nanocomposite hollow fiber. A hollow-fiber membrane consists of porous polymer fiber with a gas separation layer applied to its outer surface. Membrane cartridge is a bundle of hollow fibers integrated in a special way. The compressed air is supplied under pressure into the internal channels of hollow fibers. Air separation is achieved due to the difference in partial pressures on the external and internal membrane surfaces. The nitrogen as a product gas has a low rate of permeating the membrane layer and exits through one of the outlet nozzles nearly without pressure loss. Operating principle of nitrogen production systems Commercial membrane nitrogen systems with in-fiber air injection have the following principle of operation: The compressed air from the compressor output is fed into the air pretreatment system for removal of mechanical impurities, condensed moisture and oil. The pretreated air is supplied to the electric heater maintaining the optimal temperature in the membrane modules during the separation process. The air heated to the required temperature is delivered to the membrane gas separation modules for gaseous nitrogen recovery. The compressed air entering through the inlet of each membrane module flows inside the hollow fibers partially permeating them and absorbing oxygen and water vapors. The permeating oxygenated air that accumulates in the inter-fiber space is removed through the side outlet of each module and discharged into the atmosphere. The non-permeating part of the air is getting enriched with nitrogen while moving along the fibers and diverted through the outlet on the other side of each membrane module for delivery to consumer. Where necessary, the pressure of the nitrogen produced by the membrane plant may be increased with the use of a booster compressor. Application Pipelines purging and pressure testing In order to ensure explosion and fire safety during transportation of natural gas, oil and petroleum products nitrogen is used for cleaning and purging pipelines. The use of nitrogen as an inert gas for pressure testing pipelines guarantees complete safety of works. 7 Drying oil and gas pipelines and equipment After a number of process operations, certain equipment units and pipeline sections may contain water, which is a very undesirable factor. Residual water is effectively removed with dry nitrogen providing the environment for very intensive evaporation. Nitrogen fire fighting Nitrogen is efficiently used in preventing fire and water hazards at oil and gas producing facilities and coal mines. Well drilling High-pressure nitrogen is used in coiltubing operations well drilling with the use of coiled tubing. This technology helps to multiply increase the rate of penetration, reduce the risk of reservoir damage, and prevent explosions and fires. Well workover During workovers, nitrogen is normally used in foam solutions to ensure explosion and fire safety. The use of nitrogen guarantees work safety and allows reducing the workover period and the number of process operations. Well stimulation; well cementing Nitrogen is actively used in operations associated with well stimulation. The inert properties of nitrogen are important for foam and acid treatment of reservoirs and gas lift operations, during which nitrogen serves as a source of compressed energy. During well cementing, nitrogen is used for making up low-density cement slurries. Purging OGPU, CS, BCS equipment Nitrogen is used for purging various process equipment at oil and gas pretreatment units, compressor stations (CS), booster compressors stations (BCS) etc. Filling process space with nitrogen Nitrogen packages are used for filling tanks with gaseous nitrogen at both low and high pressure. www.grasys.com
