Hung Gar Instruc tional Videos UNLOCK THE SECRETS OF HUNG GAR The essence of Hung Gar can be found in its name. "Hung" means to "stand tall with integrity." Hung Gar tenants stress honesty, directness, iron will-power and righteousness. Hung Gar training emphasizes strong stances, iron-hard blocks, low snapping kicks, ambidexterity, deceptive hand techniques and power, all geared for close-range techniques. The low, strong stances conform well to encounters on barges and rafts. Low snapping kicks are well suited to wet and slippery ground. This is the style of the legendary Master Wong Fei Hong. Hung Gar hand techniques stress ambidexterity and use simultaneous blocking and striking. The blocking maneuvers of Hung Gar were well-known and feared. Opponents often thought twice before challenging a Hung Gar practitioner, for if a block could numb an attacker's limb, how much more painful must a strike be? The training is grueling and highly demanding and fits well the student who is physically strong and compact, of muscular build and who possesses great endurance. There are many legendary stories of Hung Gar students who practiced standing in a horse stance for the length of time it took an incense stick to burn completely, generally speaking this took from one to three hours. WLE s instructional videos are a complete system. It includes hand, weapon, and sparring sets of Canton Hung Gar, and the Hay Say Fu system of Hung Gar. The sets include traditional Hung Gar forms, supplemented by sets from other systems. Each form builds on the basic skills of Kung Fu but each emphasizes a different ability. There are seventeen weapon sets, covering the four basic weapons - staff, broadsword, spear and straight sword - as well as more exotic weapons, including the long pole, hoe, double butterfly knives, trident, long handle knife, Tiger Head Shields, bench and round shield. The sparring sets complete the Hung Gar curriculum. These sets include hand and weapon sets, such as the Tiger and Crane Sparring Set, Empty Hands vs Butterfly Swords, Spear versus Butterfly Swords, and Long Staff versus Long Staff. Introductory Hung Gar and Arrow Hand This videotape shows you everything you need to know to get started in Hung Gar. You will learn the immovable stances that have made Hung Gar famous, along with basic stretching, striking techniques, blocking practice, and exercises to increase your power. Also included is your first set, Arrow Hand, which introduces many of these fundamental concepts in an easy-to-learn routine. Stock#VHG01 29.95 Lau Gar Kuen (Lau Clan Fist) Lau Gar was originally a secret system taught only to people with the surname Lau. It was adopted by Hung Gar and has become a standard part of the curriculum. Lau Gar has been made popular by the famous master Lau Kar Leung, director and star of many great martial arts movies, such as Jackie Chan's Drunken Master films. Stock#VHG02 39.95 Kung Gee Fook Fu Kuen (Taming the Tiger) According to legend, Kung Gee Fook Fu Kuen was created by one of the founding masters of Hung Gar, Hung Hay Kwun, seven generations ago. You will learn one of the classic sets that has earned Hung Gar its awesome reputation. This set introduces Hung Gar's signature training technique, Kiu Sau (Bridge hand). This technique builds up your forearms and has combat applications. Stock#VHG03 39.95 4 ORDER TOLL FREE 1-800-700-3698

Hung Gar Instruc tional Videos Monkey King Staff The Monkey King is a mystic warrior from China's mythical epic, Journey to the West. He wielded a magic staff that could expand or contract to any size. This has inspired many different Kung Fu sets, including sets for the Peking Opera that are more dance-like than martial. This Monkey Staff will teach you practical blocks and powerful strikes that can be used in actual combat. You should learn the staff first before any other weapons! Stock#VHG04 39.95 Tiger and Crane Tiger and Crane is one of the most famous sets of Hung Gar. Its creation is attributed to the legendary folk hero and Hung Gar master, Wong Fei Hung. This set reveals more techniques of Hung Gar than any other. It has spawned numerous imitations, even whole schools based on this one set! Now you can learn the authentic original version, only three generations away from its founder, from this video. Stock#VHG05 39.95 Tiger and Crane Sparring Sparring sets allow you and your partner to practice deadly techniques at full speed and power, without any artificial protective padding. This video shows you the step-by-step method of how to execute these lethal attacks safely and realistically. This is like two sets in one. Once you complete one side, you and your partner can switch roles and begin again! Recommended preparation: Tiger and Crane (VHG05) Stock#VHG06 39.95 Lau Gar Long Staff Another set from Lau Gar, this set uses a long, tapered staff, known as a rat tail staff. Rat tail staffs are faster and have more reach than conventional staffs. This set will teach you how to project your power all the way through a long weapon such as this. Staff is an important part of your training and is the basic weapon you need to know to master Kung Fu! Stock#VHG07 39.95 Butterfly Swords Butterfly Swords are the favorite weapons of Southern Kung Fu. Short, efficient, and deadly, these weapons build strength and flexibility in your wrists and forearms. In Cantonese, these swords were Gai Dao (punishment blades). Once, they were the only edged weapons that Southern Shaolin monks were permitted to carry. If you practice Hung Gar, you must know your Butterfly Swords! Stock#VHG08 39.95 Butterfly Palm Increase your speed! This video shows you how! Butterfly Palm is a set from Northern Kung Fu that builds quick reflexes. Since Hung Gar has such a heavy emphasis on power, Siu Ying (the wife of Chiu Kau) added Butterfly Palm to the system for its rapid attacks. You will learn high kicks, aerial kicks and ground rolling techniques above and beyond the rest of the Hung Gar system! Stock#VHG09 39.95 Kunlun Mountain Straight Sword Kunlun is a mystic mountain in China, renown for its lethal sword masters. This set reveals to you the rare Jan Ghim style of swordplay. Unlike most flowing sword styles (known as Hung Ghim-different than Hung Gar), Jan Ghim develops forceful thrusts that could punch your sword point through armor. Through this video, you can learn this unique and powerful method of swordplay! Stock#VHG10 39.95 Five Animals Five Animals is one of the most famous sets of Kung Fu. Shaolin monks imitated the fighting techniques of wild animals, passing these techniques down as part of their precious legacy. This set will show you the ways of the Dragon, the Snake, the Tiger, the Panther, and the Crane. You will be introduced to breathing techniques to increase your internal energy. Release the beast inside of you! Stock#VHG11 39.95 Five Animals and Five Elements Five Animals and Five Elements is a continuation of Five Animals. Many students only learn Five Animals. You can be one of the select few who also know the elements section that is often omitted from the end. These elements are Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Stock#VHG12 39.95 Panther* This video will teach you how to attack as quickly as a cat! You will learn to be as quick and agile as the Panther. Since this is the first of the Ha Say Fu Hung Gar sets, this video will introduce you to the unique aspects of this uncommon school, such as its special fighting stance known as Yee Gee Kim Yeung Ma, and the dreaded panther fist! Stock#VHG13 39.95 Tiger* No creature embodies the fighting spirit of the Southern styles better than the Tiger. Its magnificent power, speed, courage, and ferocity have inspired warriors for generations. Now you can summon the mighty spirit of the Tiger. This video will show you how to turn your hands into vicious claws for brutal assaults. You will also learn special breathing techniques to focus your internal energy into your attack. Stock#VHG14 39.95 Plum Flower Spear Southern styles tend to favor long staff over spear, so the Plum Flower Spear is frequently forgotten. Now you can learn this deadly weapon that was so prevalent on the battlefield it earned the title of the King of Weapons. Sometimes called the Four Door Plum Flower Spear, this set will teach you to attack and defend in all four directions! Stock#VHG15 39.95 General Chai Yang Long- Handle Knife Instead of pumping iron, traditional Kung Fu masters used heavy weapons for weight training. This builds your muscles and fighting spirit at the same time! The Long-handled knife is often called the Kwan Do (after the patron saint of Kung Fu, General Kwan or Guan Yu). However, this set actually pays homage to a different hero, General Chai Yang of the Han dynasty. Stock#VHG16 39.95 Plum Flower Chain Whip This video will show you one of Kung Fu's most devastating weapons. In the old days, Chain Whips were often secret weapons because they were so easily concealed. They could be worn as a belt or folded in the pocket. Chain Whip is the only flexible weapon of Hung Gar. Mastery of Chain Whip is essential to your complete Kung Fu repertoire! Stock#VHG17 39.95 Hunting Tiger Trident* The conquering Tiger has inspired Kung Fu heroes for centuries. Now you can learn the legendary Hunting Tiger Trident (a.k.a. Tiger Fork) through this video! Traditionally a heavy weapon, Trident builds your muscles as it teaches you combat techniques. Trident is a weapon of authentic Kung Fu masters! Stock#VHG18 39.95 Visit us online at www.wle.com 5

Hung Gar Instruc tional Videos Four Gates Hand Sparring* With traditional Kung Fu sparring sets, you and your partner can refine your applications without resorting to protective pads. These combat sparring sets not only train your distance and timing, they harden your limbs like blocking drills, preparing your body for fighting. This set also teaches you Chin Na (joint locks)-how to apply it and how to counter it! Stock#VHG19 39.95 Fifth Son Eight Trigrams Staff Twice the length of an ordinary staff! According to legend, this set was created by a famous spear master named Yeung, the lone survivor of his four brothers. He converted all of his spear techniques to staff techniques when he entered the Shaolin Temple. The incredible length of this staff will strengthen your wrists and increase your coordination! Stock#VHG21 39.95 Round Shield & Butterfly Sword* In days of old, sword and shield were the offense and defense of many battlefield warriors. Today, few martial artists still remember how to use a shield. This video will show you the real techniques behind the shield, such as how to cover your whole body, how to launch surprise attacks, and how to gain the advantage! Stock#VHG20 39.95 Fifth Son Eight Trigrams Long Staff Sparring Now, you and a partner can train long staff combat at full speed and power, without protective gear! Weapon sparring allows you to practice lethal blows against a real opponent in a safe and controlled manner. You and your partner will increase your speed, accuracy, and ferocity by using the sparring methods of this video! Recommended preparation: Fifth Son Eight Trigrams Staff (VHG21) Stock#VHG22 39.95 Internal Energy Training (Iron Thread) Increase your internal power! Through dynamic tension, isometric exercises, and special breathing techniques, you will learn the secrets behind internal energy. Also known as Iron Wire or Iron Thread, this set not only builds external muscle, it strengthens your internal organs and cultivates your energies, known as Chi (or Qi). One of our most popular videos! Stock#VHG23 49.95 Plum Flower Double Chain Whip This video will reveal to you one of the most challenging weapons of Kung Fu, rarely seen performed except by the true Kung Fu masters! Few people learn the single Chain Whip, even less learn the Double Chain Whip. Now you can be one of the dedicated few. This set will boost your coordination like no other! Stock#VHG24 39.95 Snake* Strike like the Snake! You've probably seen many fanciful versions of Snake in movies. This video contains the real thing, an authentic and traditional Snake! You will learn the Snake tongue strike the unique pressure point attack of Snake. Snake will teach you the secrets behind soft strength, how to keep your external body soft and flexible while your internal core remains solid! Stock#VHG25 49.95 Crane* Cranes are revered for their nobility, grace, and longevity. This video will show you the sophisticated techniques of the majestic Crane, its elegant wing-like blocks and its vicious Crane claw strike. At the turn of the century, the European saber was in common usage by Western military. I had been studying Hung Gar, an external form of Kung Fu, for several years before I began studying Xing Yi. I had just completed learning a couple of weapon sets when Sifu Wing Lam asked me what I wanted to learn next. My response was that I wanted to learn more weapons. Sifu suggested I learn Xing Yi. I said "sure", even though I had very little idea of what Xing Yi was and I didn't think it involved a lot of weapons. The truth was I thought it was a good idea because Sifu thought it was a good idea. As it turned out, it was an excellent idea. Xing Yi is an internal Chinese martial art form; one of the three most popular forms which also include Tai Chi and Ba Gua. Xing Yi translates to Mind Form Boxing, which captures the essence of the form: controlling one's energy and movements. While that description does not necessarily delineate Xing Yi from the other internal forms, the application of it does. Tai Chi's movements are soft and rounded with energy being released to the target like that of a whip, strong and penetrating. The fighting nature of Tai Chi is to find the opponent's weakness and use it, making it well suited for defensive applications. Ba Gua movements are distinctly circular and not as soft as Tai Chi. It is suited for both offense and defense. While Xing Yi is an internal form, the movements themselves are powerful, even explosive and are generally conducted in a straight line, moving in and out. The emphasis on Xing Yi is on the attack. Another way to depict the differences between the three forms is with an analogy: given a brick wall, the tai chi practioner would wait for the wall to develop a weakness or crumble, the Ba Gau practioner would walk around it, and the Xing Yi practioner would knock a hole in it. As with many of the martial arts, the origin of Xing Yi is subject to some debate. The origin is often attributed to Marshall Yeuh Fei who lived during the Song Dynasty of the 12th century AD. Whatever the origin might have been, one thing is clear, Marshall Fei used Xing Yi as an effective way to train his troops. This is because there are relatively few movements in Xing Yi, the fighting principles are straightforward, and so the practioner can acquire skill and apply the knowledge more quickly. An added benefit of Xing Yi training is that it also conditions the vital organs of the body, which I will discuss below. The foundation for Xing Yi training is the San Ti stance. Xing Yi begins in the Wu Ji stance, similar to Tai Chi. This is an empty or neutral stance with no commitment in any direction. The purpose of Wu Ji is to clear the mind and body. By Mark Loeffel 14 All the joints have an even amount of tension and link together. Muscles are relaxed. And the arms need to have inward and outward energy. Eyes open, looking straight ahead at eye height. From this stance, we transition from Wu Ji to Xi Ang (four character animals). Like many of the Chinese martial arts, Xing Yi uses animals as reference for the movements, including the Xi Ang stance. There are four animals Wu Ji

represented in Xi Ang: the bear's shoulders, the dragon's body, the rooster's leg, and the tiger's paws. In the picture, we can see the bear's shoulders, referring to the shoulders being rounded forward, the head and neck straight. The tension is even around the neck. The dragon's body refers to the body folding at the hip joint, the knees and the ankle. The rooster's leg refers to the linking of the front and rear leg. The front leg has lifting energy but is on the ground. The rear leg is set. The six joints in the arms have even sinking energy (wrist, elbow and shoulder). The tiger's paws refer to the motion the tiger uses when it wraps its paws around its prey. The hands are stacking - top hand first two fingers stacking on top of the index finger of the left hand. Xi Ang is a transition stage. From Xi Ang, we move into San Ti. The San Ti Xi Ang stance has intent, but it is balanced: up and down, in and out, expanding and contracting all at once. The hands have in and out energy (front hand and back hand); the finger tip of the left hand is at nose level. There is a 90 degree angle in the thumb and forefinger. The knees are inward. This is key to linking then energy in the legs. San Ti is also referred to as the trinity stance. Trinity refers to three parts. It begins with the head, hands and feet. But each of these is also divided into three. The head (the body) is divided into the waist, the back and the head, which include both the external components and the internal organs. The hands are divided into the shoulders, the elbow and the hands. The feet are divided into the hip, the knees and the feet. In San Ti, it important to have alignment of all the trinities so that chi can be directed where the mind wants it. The student wishing to practice Xing Yi must develop a strong foundation, which means perfecting the San Ti stance. Although Xing Yi is relatively simple to learn, the longer one practices the fundamentals correctly, the better prepared one is to advance. San Ti Each of the forms also begins with the San Ti stance. 5 ELEMENTS Learning the forms of Xing Yi begins with the five basic elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Each element is defined by the energy it exhibits and is also linked to a specific organ of the body. Metal represents energy that is heavy and is linked to the lungs. It is sometimes referred to as splitting energy. The energy used is like that of swinging an axe. Wood represents energy that smashes (out) and is linked to the liver. Water represents energy that drills (up) and is related to the kidneys. Fire represents energy which is explosive and relates to the heart. It is sometimes referred to as pounding energy. And Earth represents crossing energy and is linked to the spleen. The energy in earth is circular, like that of a ball. Traditionally, these elements are learned in this order, although earth is thought to give rise to all others. Practiced correctly, each of these elements is thought to strengthen the particular organ. Metal - splitting The back of the fist has downward energy. The rear hand has to match the energy of the front hand. The back heel has to be at the proper angle. The front foot is at 45 degree angle. Wood - smashing Fist flat (angle of the wrist), focus is on the first two knuckles. The body twists slightly forward when punching with the right, but the body is square when punching with the left. Water - Drilling Both hands have twisting energy and move in opposite directions. Hips are square. Fire - Pounding Upward block and strike, the key point is to twist the body. Earth - Crossing Even thickness energy throughout the body, tension in the dan tien 15

16 In practicing the elements, it is important to learn how to capture the nature of the movement, which can only be accomplished by fully completing the movement. In metal for instance, the movements are fairly straight forward, as are all Xing Yi movements; however, the practioner needs to learn to control the whole body so that the energy is heavy or falling. Often, the beginning student will fail to complete the movement and there will be no falling energy. Also in metal, in order for the energy to sink, it must first rise. Otherwise, there can be no fall. In practicing wood, there must first be energy pulling in before there is energy smashing out. A common mistake on wood is to focus on the punching hand. This is external. Rather, the focus should be on pulling the front hand back. This allows the rear hand to punch quickly out. And since it is linked with the rest of the body, it is stronger. The elements, once learned, are designed to be used in combination and also against each other. In Xing Yi we refer to this as the constructive and destructive cycles. The five element combination form is designed to develop the constructive cycle. In this form, the student learns to transition from one element to the next in their natural progression as shown in the constructive cycle diagram below: METAL The five element combination form also teaches the student to apply the energy in different movements. When we add the destructive cycle to this chart, we see the elements that can be used to defeat the other as shown below: METAL WATER WATER EARTH EARTH WOOD WOOD FIRE FIRE The ability to construct as well as defeat is demonstrated in the Five Element Creative and Destructive Fists - Two Person Form. In this form we practice creating energy from one movement to another, while defeating the opponent's movements. This form trains the transitions at a higher level. The student that is quicker in transition, with the proper energy, has a decided advantage in this form, as will be the case in real combat. In the pictures below, Khan and I demonstrate various aspects of the Five Element Creative and Destructive Fists. Fig.1 Fig.1: Mark blocking and striking with metal against Khan: I defeat a wood punch by Khan with a metal block, stepping in and following that up with a metal strike to the upper targets. Fig.2 Fig.2: Khan countered the metal movement with fire, lifting metal before it struck and punching out in the same movement. Fig.3: I take a quick step back with my right foot to give myself room and counter the fire punch with a block and drilling fist (water) Fig.4 Fig.4: Khan counters water with earth and Mark counters earth with wood. Khan blocks the drilling fist by pushing on the upper arm, which essentially stops the drilling punch. The key for me is too not fight this block; rather I use the energy from this to counter with a wood punch with my other hand. This is an extremely effective strike as Khan has little time to get out of the way or block it, particularly if he over commits blocking the drilling punch. 12 Animals Fig.3 As the student develops the ability to transition from one element to another, the next phase is to use the elements together in single movements. Xing Yi uses 12 animals to do this. Each animal has a distinct nature to it and the objective of the student is to capture the essence of the animal in their movement. Unlike external forms where the animals are often used to characterize the method of attack (tiger claw, crane beak, etc.), the internal forms capture the essence of how the animal moves, particularly to attack. Like the five elements, the twelve animals are also usually learned in a particular sequence.

Dragon Dragon is the first animal. The shape of the dragon, with its winding body, requires energy that is up and down to move the body forward. The body coils up, and then elongates down and forward. The dragon movements in Xing Yi are therefore up and down. The dragon begins with a high single leg stance and proceeds to use a very low stance which moves the student forward. The dragon strengthens the ligaments and provides excellent feedback for the student on alignment and whether internal or external energy is being used to complete the movements. The student will struggle to maintain balance and also to rise from the low stances if the energy is external or the body is not linked. The key point in doing this movement is that the leading point is the chin followed by the hands. Even things like head position play a vital role in the dragon. If the head is too far forward, or looking down, the student will find it considerably more difficult to rise from the low stance. Metal is an important element in the dragon movement as the energy rises and falls. However, metal is not the only element displayed in dragon. It is important in each animal to combine elements as needed. In rising, there is also drilling, which is water. The Tiger is the second animal. A tiger attacks by pouncing. Therefore the movements in Xing Yi are down and up. The tiger form does not have a low stance, but rather the energy in the hands and the body sink, and then rising up and out the tiger leaps forward. The key to the tiger is to lead with the energy in the hands. The common mistake is to try and leap by pushing with the legs, or to push straight out with the hands, rather than letting the energy fall, rise and fall again. Because the energy of the dragon is mainly up and down, and the energy of the tiger is mainly down and then up, they are usually practiced together to provide balance in the training. Training dragon and tiger are my personal favorite animals. Perhaps it is because I learned them first, but I also feel that they provide excellent feedback on your training. Below, I demonstrate my favorite animals. Monkey is the third animal. Monkey's often move swing from tree to tree and therefore must be light in their movements. The essence of the monkey is to capture movements that are quick and light. The key to the monkey movement is also not to use muscle, particular when blocking. The high block is done with hand and wrist completely relaxed. As soon the hand and wrist are tensed, the energy becomes external and the block becomes weak because it is no longer linked to the body. The fourth animal is the Horse. The nature of the horse is to run fast and purposeful. In Xing Yi, this is captured in the movements of the hands and feet, but if not linked to the body, they have no substance. Unlike monkey, the horse movements are not light. Tiger Water lizard is the fifth animal. This animal skims over the surface of the water. The movements are circular, even and flowing. There is also a considerable amount of crossing energy (earth) in the water lizard. I find the water lizard similar to monkey in that I try to practice it softer. If the energy is too external, the body becomes stiff and the movements lose speed. The rooster is the sixth animal. The rooster is one of the more complex animals in the Xing Yi system, displaying movements that are both light and heavy, quick and powerful. In this form, we use single leg stance to train and the movements are quick like the stepping of a rooster. However, if the body is not linked, the single leg stance will not have any power. This form displays a significant amount of wood power. But there is also lifting energy. Here, the focus is on the shape of the front (lifting) hand and linking that to the pulling rear hand to generate the lift. This is an excellent move to feel the strength of internal power. If the movement is not connected to the rear hand, it is not able to sustain the power. Hawk follows rooster. In Xing Yi this form makes significant use of the water and fire elements. The hawk is known is for its ability to change direction quickly and attack. In this form we focus on changing direction and changing energy. Swallow is the next animal. Swallows swoop down on their prey and then quickly rise again. The swallow form uses a jump into a very low stance which trains flexibility. The transition from that stance requires the use of internal energy to shift the weight forward ready to strike. The swallow form makes use of several elements. The ninth animal is snake. Snakes move by contracting and expanding their bodies. The movements in snake require the student to generate energy through expanding up to block, folding down and then expanding out to strike. Like wood, and the lifting power in rooster, the expanding power in snake begins with the rear hand. If I don't feel the rear hand connected to the front hand, I know I'm not doing it right. Of all the animals, this is the one that probably generates the most heat when I do it, a sign of internal energy. Ostrich is the tenth animal. An ostrich powers along on strong legs and can attack with its powerful wings. Like horse, the movements in Ostrich are purposeful but quick, with energy in the fists being continually refreshed to either block or strike. The footwork in this form is also quick, like an ostrich running. Eagle is the eleventh animal. The eagle is perhaps the ultimate bird of prey. Its focus of attack is down, and so are the Xing Yi movements. Eagle makes considerable use of metal, but in this form we also use the eagle claw to grab. It is believed that performing the eagle will strengthen the eyes. 17

The focus is on the harmony of the five energies, necessary for the cultivation of Chi. The training of this set provides the foundation to learn the fighting applications of the Xing-Yi system. Stock#VTC12 Xing Yi Chuan: Twelve-Animals The animal forms shown in this video-dragon, tiger, monkey, horse, turtle, rooster, hawk, sparrow, snake, ostrich, eagle, and bear-are unique to the Xing-Yi system. Each animal style trains a different way to generate power using certain parts of the body. This form also helps in the conditioning and strengthening of the whole body. Stock#VTC14 Xing Yi Chuan: Combination Set This set combines the five elements and the twelve animals into an integral form. This highly important set in the Xing-Yi system provides a training of the system as a whole rather than its parts. This set contains both internal and external training and can help you reach peak physical condition! Stock#VTC15 YOUR CHOICE 39 95 EACH COMPLETE SET 40 Savings!!! Stock# VTC20 159 75 Bear is the last animal. A bear is a powerful, upright creature. Its power comes from the shoulders and is focused upward; therefore the focus in Xing Yi is upward. The bear makes considerable use of drilling energy, but also begins with metal energy. One key to the bear movement is to allow the eyes to focus on the attack up. If the eyes are looking down, the attacking energy can not be up. The Eagle and Bear, like Dragon and Tiger, are also practiced together. Each of the animals can be used to define your own fighting style. After completing the animal forms, the student may learn the five element twelve animal combination form. This form uses many, but not all of the animals in combination, focusing on the hawk and swallow in particular. The form also makes considerable use of the elements. The important part of this form is to clearly demonstrate the nature or character of the animal or element that is being displayed as we quickly change from one to the other. So why should you consider an internal form? For me, the benefits of Xing Yi were several. First, I feel like my external forms have benefited. Second, I feel like it gives me energy. Third, it's a form I believe I will benefit from as I get older. And finally, I think it has also impacted the way I approach things. In studying Xing Yi, the toughest thing for me to learn, and it's a continuing experience, is to recognize when my movements are strong. In addition to beginning my martial arts training with Hung Gar, I also do weight training. So I was comfortable with the external power. But external power breaks down quickly. Whereas internal power begins with proper alignment of the body, including the joints and the ligaments, which is much stronger, lasts much longer, but is much more difficult to feel. That's partly because the strength is natural. It does not require a lot of effort, which we often confuse with power. We tend to think that the more effort we put into a movement, the stronger it is. Effort generally equates to putting more muscle into it. That's external power. I sometimes think that someone with less external training has an advantage learning an internal form, because there is less to "relearn". If you are used to external forms, then you may have to relearn what constitutes power. However, I fully believe that the internal training has made my external forms even better. The fundamentals of training are not different because the body can only move in certain ways. We can not defy physics. Therefore, one of the goals of training is to make the most of what the body is capable of doing. And that is useful beyond martial training. Even the way I do certain things now, like opening a door has changed, and for the better. It is relatively easy to workout when you have the energy for it. It's a different story when you don't. I have found that Xing Yi gives me energy. I almost always feel like I have more energy after I complete a form or two. If I'm still sluggish after completing a few forms, I know that I'm not going to have much energy regardless of what I do. As I get older, I also believe that Xing Yi will benefit me. My hope is that it will slow down the aging process by keeping my ligaments strong, my joints flexible, and my internal organs healthier. Aside from the physical attributes of Xing Yi, there is a philosophical approach to Xing Yi which I believe I have benefited from. In practicing Xing Yi, the object is to remain soft so that the energy can be redirected where needed. And then when it is needed, the energy is used to strike, powerfully. There is no wasted movement or wasted energy. I've tried to apply this to other aspects of my life. Although I can't change the person I am, I can improve. And I think Xing Yi has helped me to recognize when not to exert a lot of unnecessary energy, particularly mental or emotional energy on things that don't matter, and to prepare for the things that do. And in that preparation, being calm before acting is best. Hopefully this has provided some insight that will help you determine if Xing Yi can be of value to you. 18 ORDER TOLL FREE 1-800-700-3698

That is to say that by using Brass Rings you can tell by the sound of the rings whether or not or movement was correct. The second reason is that by its nature (i.e. the properties of the brass) brass helps condition and strengthen your arm better than any other metal we ve tried. BROADSWORDS Combat Steel Broadsword Searching for a sword of more traditional parameters, Sifu Wing Lam finally came up with a solution that will be very pleasing to traditional martial artists. He has commissioned the sword forges in China to create broadswords specifically to fulfill this purpose, and the result is very impressive. The pommel and guard are made of sturdy brass an eighth of an inch thick, providing the weight that the handle needs in order to balance the weapon. The blade is made of highcarbon steel (commonly called combat steel ), which is the very best material for making sword blades because of its strength and medium weight. It possesses the flexibility to bend several inches and return straight, but the tip is so sturdy that you will want to test its might against the shipping box it came in! The blade starts with a pentagonal crosssection at its base where the spine of the weapon is thickest and eventually becomes a diamond cross-section about halfway up the blade, where it becomes thinner for a more acute edge and tip. The weapon ships with a millimeter edge for safety but it is thin enough to easily sharpen for cutting. This sword is simply the best traditional broadsword commercially available. STAFFS Selecting a Staff One of the most asked questions we get here at WLE is what's the best wood for a staff and what length should I order. Lets first start with types of wood. Wax Wood Wax Wood is an excellent choice for a staff. The wood is flexible and will not easily splinter. An excellent choice for performance. Due to its flexibility and resistance to splintering a wax wood staff is also an excellent choice for forms that have ground strikes with the staff in them Wax wood comes in two styles, Natural and Milled. Natural as the name implies is supplied without any sanding or smoothing but can be used "out of the box." Milled Wax wood has been machined and sanded. Oak Wood Oak is a heavy hardwood. Oak staffs are an excellent choice for those who want to do strength and conditioning training using a staff. Oak is subject to splintering, consequently striking the ground with an oak staff can cause it to splinter. Oak is considered to be the perfect material for those wanting a staff that is a combat weapon. Oak staffs often require additional sanding to achieve a specific "feel" Additionally just as in baseball an Oak Staff can be "boned" to make it even harder. The process involves staff along the bone. Rattan Rattan is a light and flexible material that is an excellent choice for sparring training, demonstrations, and tournaments. Rattan is splinter resistant and smooth Tapering In addition to types of wood there is staffs are also sorted by Taper. Straight A straight staff has a uniform diameter throughout the length of the staff. (i.e. No Taper) Single Taper As the name implies a single taper staff has one end that has a narrower diameter (taper) than the other nontapered end. Most often used in sets where only one end (the tapered end) is used to strike. Double Taper A double taper staff has both ends milled to a narrower diameter than the center diameter of the staff. Traditionally both ends of this type of staff can be used for striking. Length of Staff The length of a staff is generally a personal choice. A standard staff is generally 6 feet long. In traditional Kung Fu the correct height for a short staff is generally considered to be the height of the practitioners eyebrow to the floor. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Natural Finish Single Taper Wax Wood Staff W005T - 10 long...65.95 W008-8 long...35.95 W006-6 long...19.95 W005L - 6 long, light weight...14.95 Sanded Finish Single Taper W209-72 - 7 2 long; wax wood...35.95 W209-63 - 6 3 long; wax wood...19.95 White Oak Dragon W004 - White Oak dragon 8 2 long 1.5 diameter... 39.95 Sanded Finish Double Taper Wax Wood Staff W209-6125 - 6 long 1.25 diameter...28.95 W209-61 - 6 long 1.00 diameter...24.95 Straight Staff W001-72 - Red Oak 6 long 1.25 diameter...19.95 W001-60 - Red Oak 5 long 1.00 diameter...14.95 W007 - Red Oak w/ carved dragon 6 long 1.25diameter 29.95 W205 - White Oak 6 long 1.25 diameter...21.95 W204 - Wax Wood 6 long 1.25 diameter...21.95 Finished Rattan Staff W003-72 - 72 long...19.95 W003-60 - 60 long...17.95 W003-49 - 49 long...14.95 Tiger Striped Rattan Staff W201-72 - 72 long...22.95 W201-60 - 60 long...19.95 W201-49 - 49 long...14.95 Two Section Staff W110-97 long, 2.90lbs....59.95 Staff Carrying Case W162-75 - 75 x4.75...13.95 W162-63 - 63 x4.75...12.95 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Visit us online at www.wle.com 35

WING LAM CUSTOME-MADE TRADITIONAL COMBAT HEAVY WEIGHT WEAPONS With Chinese weaponry, commercial swords have tended toward two extremes: the very light and flexible for performance and ease, or the very heavy and unwieldy for training. Neither of these extremes is very realistic as a weapon or very close to the armaments of old. Searching for a sword of more traditional parameters, Sifu Wing Lam finally came up with a solution that will be very pleasing to traditional martial artists. He has commissioned the sword forges in China to create traditional heavy weight combat weapons specifically to fulfill this purpose, and the result is very impressive. T he flyer on the wall of our school said "Push Hands Class". As I read it I thought to myself, "well, that sounds interesting but this is really Tai Chi and it has been over 15 years since I have practiced any Tai Chi". Besides, Push Hands is like a kind of martial arts chess game with the object of unbalancing your opponent and then nothing more, right? I kept thinking about it until Jason, who as formulating a list of names for the class asked me if I was going to sign up. I was unsure if I would qualify, not knowing Tai Chi, so I asked Sifu who told me that this class would help me develop my Bagua skills. I told Jason to put my name on the list and I blocked of the time in my calendar. Anyway, this should be easy, right? It was only on Monday and Wednesday evenings for an hour. I could still do my normal workouts with no problem since Tai Chi push hands did not require any power or energy to perform, - right? This was my though process, and I was about to find out just how wrong this thought process really was. I have always been attracted to "two person"-sparing types of exercise because of what they teach you. When we first start learning a system of martial arts, Chinese Martial Arts in particular, we learn the basics of stance, punching, kicking and hand and limb conditioning. From here we move into the elementary forms where we learn individual techniques strung together in a form of preset movements. These forms, when mastered, allow us to flow from one technique to another with no conscience thought to the change. With each new form, we are exposed to new techniques but we are also exposed to new transitions into and out of techniques that we already have learned in prior forms. At this point in a students training, and understandably so, they might feel like they are able to fight off the whole world. However this is just the beginning for the next phase of their training. For an analogy, consider someone who is learning to speak a foreign language. They study their books, listen to their tapes and practice with their teacher and fellow students. But anyone who has been this far in learning a new language, and has tried to apply what they know in a real 44

world situation, knows the limitations of their skill. When you try to communicate with people whose primary language is the one you are learning, you feel like you have jumped into the deep end of the pool and the life lifeguard has just gone on his break. This is true for martial arts as well. At this point in our training we fight nothing but air or (if we are really concentrating) an imaginary opponent. This opponent is always in just the right position for us to apply the technique, always the correct height, weight and distance. In other words, this opponent speaks our new language just as well and just as slow as we do. Here is where the two person sparing form comes in, taking us to the next step. It teaches us how to allow for opponents that are taller/shorter, bigger/smaller and stronger/weaker. It teaches us how to bridge a real distance between you and them, react to and sense the tempo of their movement and know the cost (in pain) of what it is like to make a mistake. In theory, two person exercises are tools used in the transition from solo forms to a real free fight situation. In practice, two person training can be much more. But this is the subject of another article and I will leave it for another time. With all this being said, I never considered Tai Chi Push Hands to be any of this. But then I was not looking at it form my Sifu's point of view - a point of view that never ceases to amaze me. We started the class with one handed pushing which seems easy at first. Each partner joins their hands at the wrists while one pushes towards the other. The attacker strives to push the centerline of the defender while the defender "sticks" to the attacker's arm only to deflect him at the moment just before he is fully extended. This was easy enough until my back leg grew tired. But how could this be? I can stand in a horse stance for 45 minutes; why are my legs getting tired? I soon found out that it was because I was using my leg mussels and not the ligaments in my hip an ankle to maintain my balance and position. And my shoulder was killing me! I looked at the clock for the first time. Only a half an hour had passed! I thought the clock had stopped! After a little more single-handed pushing, Sifu started teaching us two handed pushing. At first, two handed pushing was very confusing, compounded by the fact that we kept switching partners. Every time I was just getting in the groove with one, we would switch. Being 6 foot 4 inches tall, there was no one in the class as tall as me so it seemed that all my "next" partners were pushing up towards me while I was pushing down towards them. Class in session with Sifu Wing Lam very "sticky", always keeping contact with my arms. They only had to push you ever so slightly and you knew you were off balance and beaten. Some were a bit harder, striving to get softer but instinctively falling back on their external training when being up rooted or trying to uproot their opponent. Others seem to have the idea that it was a competition of strength and muscle with their sole goal being to push their opponent off balance and missing the concept of when to be soft and when to be hard. You can also learn a lot about yourself in a situation like this. I found out early what my own strengths, weaknesses, confidences and insecurities were. All this mixed together, forms a mold from which a student can emerge with a higher awareness of themselves and the world around them. You can learn a lot about people in situations like this and I started to see my classmates in terms of their skill level, their self-confidence, their insecurities, their strengths as well as their weaknesses. Everyone in the class, except me, knew at least one Tai Chi form. Some were very experienced, having practiced for a number of years and some were just starting. This was evident in their pushing. In Tai Chi push hands you have to know when to be passive and when to be aggressive. Better stated, you have to "feel" when to be passive and when to be aggressive and this, over time and practice, will get better. In my estimation, Tai Chi push hands, at the highest level, is ninety-five percent passive and five percent aggressive. As I switched partners, I experienced classmates that were silky soft and Wing Lam students practice Push Hands The next morning, when I got out of bed for work, I hobbled bent over into the shower. The hot steamy water allowed my sore muscles to loosen up and I gradually felt better. Now I have always relished, in a masochistic sort of way, the feeling of sore muscles the day after a workout. To me, this signaled that I was making gains and that my body was being trained. It is the "No Pain, No Gain" mind set. But I could not believe that I was feeling this way for the push hands class. This was supposed to be the softest form of martial arts! As I stood there in the shower I realized that I had entered into something unknown to me, something that was different than all my Hung Gar and all my Bagua training. 45

Sifu Wing Lam with students of Push Hands class In the next few weeks Sifu kept building on what we had learned. He introduced us to footwork, stepping back and forth and from side to side. He introduced us to double striking and blocking drills and, just for fun he threw in some joint locking or "Chin Na" techniques too. I was privileged to see the growth of my fellow students. The ones who already had a level of skill got better and the ones (like me) who had no skill made quantum leaps. The hardness got softer and their "mind's intent" became harder to predict. I believe that I also had changed. I quit looking at the clock. I started to use only the amount of muscle tension needed and relied more on tendon and ligament strength. My level of "feeling" awareness made great gains and, most of all, I was able to see how much my Bagua has improved. I will conclude this article by recommending that ANY martial artist regardless of method or style take a push hands class. Why? What could this offer anyone who is not an internal stylist? Well, at the high level of the martial arts, the results are the same. Where the externalist starts hard, they will learn when to be soft. The internalist starts off soft and learns when to be hard. Both start at each end of the martial spectrum and strive towards the other end. Tai Chi push hands is a tool, just like any other sparing set, that increases the students exposure to a real live partner. It teaches the student to use his perception, his sixth sense if you will to discern an opponent's intention even before they know what they will do. It can teach you about human nature and teach you a lot about yourself. Oh I forgot.it can also be a hell of a lot of fun too!
