Cole chronicle Providing news and information to Cole Canoe Base since 1964 Volume LII Number 4 April, 2016 Think Spring! Please Hurry! We know it ll get here but we re also impatient for the excitement and fun of summer camp More New Excitement For Beast Feast This Year Beast Feast is the marque event at Cole Canoe Base. It s getting improved again this year with new elements. There will be themes, facades and a new contest. We encourage you to help us ramp up the Beast Feast with some fun new things. When you get to the Beast Feast, have a theme. We ve seen pirates, road builders and other motifs. Use your imagination to represent a theme with costumes, props, slogans and of course special foods. Along with your theme, think about a façade or scene for your table. A façade will make your troop or unit stand out and attract more attention. We will have a contest to find the best represented theme for the week. These new elements will be lots of fun at an already great event. One other thing about the Beast Feast, it is not a chili cook-off. Please choose foods that do not qualify as chili for Beast Feast. Many scouts and adults are sensitive to spicy foods and may have difficulty if they eat very spicy foods. Thanks for understanding. For more information and a video, check out the Scouting Magazine article on-line at: http://scoutingmagazine.org/2015/08/ how-michigans-cole-canoe-base-cooks-up-fun-for-campers-and-staff/ or in the video gallery at colecanoebase.com. EVERY WEEK OF SUMMER CAMP AT COLE CANOE BASE WE WILL BE HONORING OUR HOMETOWN HEROS. IT IS THESE INDIVIDUALS WHO LIVE THE TRUE MEANING OF THE SCOUT OATH AND LAW. WE WILL BE SETTING ASIDE ALL DAY EVERY THURSDAY TO RECOGNIZE THOSE WHO PUT THEMSELVES AT GREAT RISK TO PROTECT, DEFEND, AND RENDER AID TO THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. WE ARE INVITING ANY CURRENT OR VETERAN MILITARY, LAW INFORCEMENT OFFICERS, FIREFIGHTERS, OR FIRST RESPONDERS TO SHOW THEIR PRIDE BY WEARING A HAT OR SHIRT (representing their branch) TO REMIND EVERYONE OF THE SACRIFICES THEY HAVE ENDURED IN THEIR CAREERS. WE ASK THAT THOSE PARTAKING IN THIS HONOR WILL EVEN WEAR THEIR ATTIRE TO THE LEADERS APPRECIATION DINNER AND WE ASK THEM TO ASSIST US AND BE ACKNOWLEDGED DURING THE FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY AT THE FRIDAY NIGHT CAMPFIRE. Page Two THE HOME OF HEROS THE ENTIRE COLE CANOE BASE MANAGEMENT TEAM AND STAFF THANKS EACH OF YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO DUTY.

Page three MCC Provisional Camping Opportunities Provisional camp is an opportunity for a Scout to spend a week at camp without having to come with his Troop. For Summer Camp 2016 our Order of the Arrow Lodges will provide a Scoutmaster and Troop leadership for all provisional Scouts in attendance. The Scout will work on the merit badges and rank advancements that are offered during the regular summer season, or participate in any of the older-boy programs. Provisional camping is also a chance for a Scout to experience a second week of camping; whether to finish merit badges or just enjoy the fun and adventure of the outdoor program. Outdoor Adventures and the Michigan Chapters of the Order of the Arrow are pleased to announce provisional camping opportunities available for all Boy Scouts in 2016 at the following camps/sessions; Cole Canoe Base, Session 1, June 12-18 Sponsored by Nataepu Shohpe Lodge D-bar-A Scout Ranch, Session 3, July 3-9 Sponsored by Agaming Maahgogwan Lodge Gerber Scout Reservation, Session 4, July 3-9 Sponsored by Kishahteck Lodge Camp Rotary, Session 6, July 24-30 Sponsored by Noquet Lodge Interested in Attending? If you are interested in attending a session of Provisional Camp this summer, please go to this link and complete the registration form: http://michiganscouting.org/outdooradventures/provisional-summer-camp/ Outdoor Adventures is proud to announce a recognition for any Boy Scout Troop, Crew, or Team to earn that have camped at a minimum of 4 different MCC Summer Camps beginning with Boy Scout Resident Camp 2013 MCC s inaugural summer. This award will be a custom engraved baseball bat to be proudly displayed on the unit s brag-wall back home. To qualify the unit simply needs to complete the information form: http://michiganscouting.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/grand-slam- Award.pdf and submit it. It s as easy as that! Any Boy Scout Troop, Crew, or Team is eligible for this award and there is no time limit to earning this award. Each scout and adult leader that attended each of the qualifying MCC camps listed is also entitled to proudly wear the MCC Grand Slam patch. All proceeds from the sale of the MCC Grand Slam patch go to the MCC Camp Staff Scholarship Fund.

Page five Week 8 Provisional: Great Lakes Kayak Adventure. What were we thinking? We re excited to announce more details on the Great Lakes Kayak Adventure. This trip is sure to be an unforgettable experience. This trip is different from what we have offered up to this point. This fall, the High Adventure Director, along with some friends and staff members took a trailer of kayaks to the Upper Peninsula, under the cover of program research. We had very little idea what we wanted to do when we got there; our only goal was to have fun. We planed our trip as we went. We spent a day exploring Pictured Rocks, kayaking a couple of miles in either direction of Chapel Beach. Our campsite was right on the water so we spend a lot of time in the straights, just a few hundred yards away from the Mackinac Bridge. But perhaps the highlight of this experience was paddling out from our campsite just in time to watch the sun set over the straits. When it was all said and done, we had the foundation of a New Program. We made notes of what we liked, where we camped, what we wanted to do again and what we wished we had done. We came up with the perfect itinerary for our return trip. You can be a part of the excitement! Grab a paddle and get ready to join us for the 2016 Great Lakes Kayak Adventure. Please feel free to contact Gregg Zdan for more information on this adventure!
