UT ARLINGTON VOLLEYBALL SCOUTING UTSA >> UTSA (-, -) It seems to be a tale of two seasons for the UTSA Roadrunners so far this season. The first two weekends saw UTSA tally a - record in tournament action in Houston and Waco. Since, the Roadrunners are a perfect 5- with a tournament championship at the DePaul Invitational and with a home non-conference win over UT-Pan American. The Roadrunners began their five-match win streak with a victory over Georgia (5-, 5-, -, 5-5) at the Convocation Center. Then they went to Chicago to defeat DePaul (-), Denver (-) and Ball State (-) to take the tourney title. Sophomore Kendra Rowland was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week after averaging. kills per set in the Roadrunners four victories. Rowland's kills against Georgia is the most by any SLC player this season. UTSA head coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff will try to collect her th victory at UTSA against the Mavericks. She currently owns a 99-5 record during her seven-year head coaching tenure at UTSA. Rowland currently leads the conference averaging.7 kills per set. USTA has proved to be solid off the attack ranking second in the conference averaging 5. digs per contest. In addition, the Roadrunners have two players with a team-high 5 service aces (Elise Huskey, Amber Brooks). SCOUTING TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI >> TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI (-, -) The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders will host Texas State on Friday and the Mavericks on Saturday evening to open its Southland Conference slate. The Islanders match against Texas State on Friday will be their first match in days, after traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the Air Force Tournament on Sept. -. Both of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's victories came in three-set sweeps against Texas Southern (Sept. 5) and North Carolina Central (Sept. ). The Islanders, like the Mavericks, were swept in three sets against UALR, with the Trojans defeating the Islanders 5-7, 5-, -. The Islanders are led by senior 5-foot-9 outside hitter Lauren Paslay, who currently leads the team in kills (7), kills per set (.), digs (9) and digs per set (.5). Paslay's kills per set total ranks her tied for fifth in the Southland. The one glaring difference between the Islanders and the Mavericks is in the blocking column. In their previous two matches, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi has tallied over 5 digs in each match while averaging 5. dps. UT ARLINGTON HEAD COACH - DIANE SEYMOUR >> Diane Seymour begins her fifth year as the head volleyball coach at in. Seymour is no stranger to the Maverick s program after coming to UTA in 9 as a student-athlete and later spending eight years (99-) as the assistant coach. Overall, Seymour has spent seasons with the UTA volleyball program, helping lead them to victories, seven Southland Conference championships, six NCAA Tournament appearances and to a No. 7 national ranking at the end of the 9 season. Seymour has built an impressive resume in four seasons at the helm of the Mavericks program recording a 7-9 overall mark (.), which includes two straight second-place finishes in the Southland Conference Western Division. The past two seasons Seymour has guided UTA to consecutive - league records. Since, she has mentored Southland All-Conference picks, including three during the 7 season. Averaging 9 wins per seasons as head coach, Seymour has directed UTA to three double-figure win totals in Southland Conference play. Her squads have totaled a -7 conference record since. Seymour returned to her alma mater in 99 as an assistant coach on Janine Smith s staff. In her eight years as an assistant, the team captured two regular season championships and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament while never finishing lower than fourth in the conference. Just three weeks prior to the start of two-a-days in, Seymour was named the interim head coach. With a young squad featuring six freshman and just two seniors, the Diane Seymour era began with a thrilling five-game victory over Baylor. The Mavericks trailed -9 in the deciding game but climbed back to defeat the Bears for the first time since 99 (-, -9, -, -, 7-5). The season-opening victory was only the beginning as the Mavericks rattled off victories during their first 5 matches. The squad ended the season with an overall record of -7 and a 5-5 mark in conference play, finishing in third place. The 5 conference victories marked just the fourth time a UTA team has won at least 5 conference matches in a single season. On the way, the team won tournament titles at the Western New York Invite and the UTA Invitational. Individual success also followed the team as four players went on to earn all-conference accolades. Junior outside hitter Ashley Van Antwerp became the first All-Southland Conference first team selection since, while seniors Heather Dunn and Caley Smith earned second team honors. Freshman Morgan Rogers earned honorable mention recognition. After the successful year in an interim role, Director of Athletics Pete Carlon named Seymour the sixth head coach in UTA history on Nov.,. In 5, numerous injuries and tough breaks contributed to a - record. Van Antwerp continued her solid play as she earned third team all-conference honors. Seymour returned the Mavericks to the top of the SLC in, guiding the team to a 5- record, including a second-place conference finish with a - mark. The team carried on the tireless work ethic of their head coach as they went 7- in five-game matches, including coming back from - game deficits to TCU and Sam Houston State. The past two seasons combined UTA is - in five-game matches. After finishing second in the regular season, the Mavs advanced to their 5th SLC Tournament championship match in 5 years. Defense has always been the forte of Seymour and was no different as the Mavs set a new SLC record with,7 digs. The digs total is also the second highest mark in the NCAA since the -point scoring format was instituted prior to the season. Individually, libero Ashley Smith re-wrote the UTA and SLC record books with digs, the second highest single-season digs total in NCAA history. After dropping the season-opener at Houston, the Mavericks posted a four-match winning streak against Louisiana Tech, Oakland, Miami (Fla.) and Marquette. Seymour s team posted a pair of five-match winning streaks and had a period where they collected victories in eight of nine matches during a day span (Sept. 5-Oct. ). UTA finished the season winning six of eight conference matches, tallied the fourth-highest winning percentage among the -team Southland, and led the league averaging. digs per game ranking nd in the nation. Seymour s senior-led squad was highlighted by two-time First Team All-Conference right-side hitter Torie Dacus. Other seniors on the SLC all-league list included two-time second team setter Emily Nedderman and Ellen Murray, who was a first team pick. As a student-athlete, Seymour came to UTA in 9, but missed all of the season after undergoing knee surgery. She worked her way into the lineup in 95 and contributed kills, digs, and service aces in matches as the team went on to go - to make the school s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The team was not satisfied with just making the tournament in 9 as they went 9-, captured its second straight conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. UTA hosted Texas State in an opening-round match and defeated the Bobcats in four games before falling in three games to LSU. Seymour would collect service aces on the season, including a school-record eight against Oklahoma on Oct. 5, 9. Coming off her second knee surgery, Seymour collected service aces and digs in helping her team to a -7 record and their third-straight conference title in 97. The victories are the most by any UTA squad since NCAA play began in 9. The team would knock off Arizona State in an opening round match before falling to Kentucky in the regional semifinals. Seymour captained the 9 squad to - record and a No. 7 ranking in the final AVCA poll. The team earned tournament wins over Pepperdine and Kentucky before being eliminated by the eventual national champion Texas Longhorns. Seymour finished her playing career with kills, 95 service aces and digs in 9 matches and games. Including her red-shirt season, the Mavs went - during her playing tenure. Seymour came to Arlington after earning all-state honors at Arlington High School in 9. She began her career at Arlington Bowie High School, playing for her college coach Lisa Love.
