Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW www.rfansw.com.au Promoting Sustainable Fishing

What is the Recreational Fishing Alliance of New South Wales? Recreational fishing is one of the most popular outdoor activities in NSW, with over one million individual anglers and hundreds of fishing clubs and associations. The Recreational Fishing Alliance of New South Wales (RFA) was established in 2000 by a group of recreational fishing organisations that had different angling interests but a common desire to have a united voice in the management of recreational fisheries in NSW. The RFA is the peak representative body made up of member associations in NSW such as the Australian National Sportfishing Association (NSW Branch), New South Wales Fishing Clubs Association, New South Wales Council of Freshwater Anglers and the NSW Underwater Skindivers and Fisherman s Association. Individuals can also become members of the RFA. The aims of the RFA are: To represent the interests of the recreational anglers of NSW and to gain equitable representation in the management of the State s recreational fisheries. To promote sustainable fishing practices throughout NSW. To encourage the participation of children in recreational fishing. To pursue and secure the rights of recreational anglers to fishing access in NSW waters. To encourage recreational anglers to become involved in the well-being of the fishery. To promote consultation and communication between government bodies and anglers. To promote fishing safety. The RFA has a mission to be recognised as the peak recreational fishing body in NSW. In the pursuit of this mission the RFA has set two goals: to deliver leadership to the recreational fishing community; and to contribute to sustainability of our fisheries resource. RFA policies can be viewed online at www.rfansw.com.au

Benefits of membership Individual anglers, clubs and associations cannot afford to be left out of the information loop, and with many organisations contributing to and sharing the information pool, we are all better informed and prepared. Membership enables you to: Have a say in formulating recreational fishing policies and the development of recreational fishing in NSW Keep up to date on issues relating to recreational angling via our website and email bulletins Have your issues raised at the highest levels within government departments and agencies Attend the quarterly and annual general meetings of the RFA

Active and connected Executive members and delegates to the RFA are actively involved in a wide range of fishing organisations and government consultative committees, including: Recfish Australia NSW DPI s Advisory Council on Recreational Fishing NSW DPI s Recreational Fishing Freshwater Trust Expenditure Committee NSW DPI s Recreational Fishing Saltwater Trust Expenditure Committee NSW DPI s Estuary General Management Advisory Committee NSW DPI s Estuary Prawn Trawl Management Advisory Committee NSW DPI s Trout Allocation Committee NSW DPI s Snowy Lakes Working Group NSW Maritime s Recreational Vessel Advisory Group Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority Australian Water Safety Council The RFA is constantly in consultation with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) and other departments and agencies of the NSW government. We represent anglers on issues as diverse as fishing regulations, fishing safety, junior fishing, submarine cable exclusion zones, safe consumption of seafood and angling in marine parks. Achievement and projects In 2007 the Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW completed an award winning, government and industry funded project to educate recreational anglers and the broader community about rock fishing safety. This included the development, production and distribution of free rock fishing safety DVDs, posters, pamphlets, brochures and television commercials, as well as community seminars targeting non-english speaking anglers. The RFA also disseminates information within the fishing community, distributing electronic bulletins linking anglers to information on draft zoning plans, meeting dates, consultation processes and a raft of other relevant information to encourage anglers to get involved and participate in the well-being of the fishery. Recently the RFA of NSW has secured funding from the Federal and NSW governments and invaluable support from the recreational fishing industry for projects such as a future leaders training program, safety DVDs focusing on freshwater/ saltwater fishing, boating safety and policy development for fishing access in NSW.
