THE MICK HOWELL CUP Mick was loved by everyone. He was one of a kind, a real character, someone who would do anything for anyone because that's the kind of guy he was. We can never replace Mick but we can all certainly try to be more like him. A loving, caring, compassionate, giving man, who always found the funny side of any situation, was never backward in coming forward to offer his opinion or defend someone but was always prepared to listen and agree to disagree and find common ground. Mick's love of the sport was only ever matched by his love of his family, his beautiful wife Carol, their two sons Ross and Mark, daughter Christine and their 8 grandchildren who he adored. Inline Hockey Australia has established the Mick Howell Cup as a part of the National Championships, an event named in Mick's honor for his years of support of hockey, not only in Victoria but all of Australia. The competition for the over 50's was inspired by a conversation Mick had in 2012 mentioning that there should be another division at Nationals each year "just for us old guys" and so came the newest division at our National championships the "50 plus" who will be competing each year for their own separate trophy. Mick was a tenacious player of ice and inline hockey, a valued experienced referee who also ran many tribunals, a coach and mentor to so many officials and players alike over the years. Such was Mick's willingness to give back to the sport he loved so much. He was passionate both on and off the rink and in life, he lived it to the full. So let's celebrate Mick's life, he wouldn't want us to dwell on the past and the sadness his passing brought to us all. He would want us to rise up, get on with it, play hockey as that was his love. Do your best, play hard but fair, fight to win that cup and then celebrate well into the night and raise a glass to celebrate life, family and friends. Always live your life for today and tell those you love what you feel every day because one day it may be your last. Rest in Peace Mick.
