Horbury Bridge CE J&I Academy Newsletter 24 7 th March 2013 Parents Evening Parents Evening will be held on Tuesday 12 th March from 3.45pm 6.00pm or Thursday 14 th March from 6.00pm 8.00pm. Appointment slots are currently being allocated so if you have not returned your slip please do so as soon as possible to ensure you get a time suitable for you. Let s Gets Cooking Cookathon The whole school gathered in the hall yesterday to take part in a Cookathon demonstration. Members of the SPIRIT club showed the rest of the school how to make a chicken korma. They demonstrated safe cutting and peeling skills as well as handing round a range of spices for the audience to smell and view. When the dish was finished every child was given a taster. The Cookathon is a Lets Get Cooking competition in which schools are asked to pass on a recipe to see how many people they can get cooking. The recipe for the curry, which on the whole got a big thumbs up from most of the children, is attached to the newsletter this week and available on our website. If you try cooking this dish please let us have a picture of your cooking session and we can count you in to the total number of people we have cooking. A number of years ago we managed to get a total of over 200 people involved - can we beat this? Sports leaders The sport leaders from class 3 are doing a fantastic job. Each Tuesday lunchtime they set up and lead a series of playground games suitable for both Key Stages. This week games were Numbers (a game of 1 on 1 football) and Is It Time For Lunch? (similar to What time is it Mr Wolf). These games come from a national initiative called "Energy Club" designed to get children more active and aware of healthy living practises Roald Dahl Lunch The specially themed menu based on Roald Dahl's revolting recipes was a big hit with 79% of children taking a school lunch. The event provided a great opportunity to explore literature in a very different way, many a conversation at the tables was about Roald Dahl books and the characters. Whilst the children waited in line to be served they took a moment to vote for their favourite Dahl bookthe result of which was Matilda. After School Club This week the club activities have been based around The Circus. Children have played lots of exciting games, learnt circus skills and made some clown biscuits during the cooking club. Next weeks theme is Spring Time and will be including lots of fun activities such as flower basket making, the usual film night and cooking club.

Foundation Stage Preparations for our forthcoming fairytale wedding on 14th March continued with every child sending a special wedding invataion home to their family. We took our letters to the Post Office said Dylan Lau. We got stamps from a nice lady and then we posted them Lucy Marshment added. The postman brought it to my house and my mummy opened it for us to read said Emily Holden It was exciting and I cant wait. Class 1 This week we investigated our sense of taste by testing a selection of drinks. Children were able to record which drink they thought were sweet, bitter, sour, unflavoured or SALTY! Afterwards we compared charts to see if they were they same, interestingly they varied considerably... When asked, Mrs Jolly insisted this does not explain why her dinners are so popular. Class 2 This week, Class Two were set a challenge. Their mission was to independently research about one invention that they found special at home. They were to then bring in the information in any way they wanted. Mr McHale was mesmerized with the amount of varied responses to the task. The inventions chosen were fantastic! From the loo roll to the hot tub, everyone picked an amazing topic. Because of the huge effort from the parents and children, everyone learnt lots of new information. Class 3 Class 3 have been linking their learning to the traditional tale Rumpelstiltskin as part of World Book Week celebrations. After reading that tale together, we then went on to explore the different characters and motives behind Rumpelstilskin wanting to take the Queens baby. In small groups, the children created freeze frame images of the story and then came to life in character to express their feelings and emotions. Next we entered the court room to make a decision as to whether Rumpelstiltskin was guilty or not. This has yet to be decided!
