2016-17 Duke Women s Golf Blue Devils in the Regionals second-best on the squad. Out of 82 career rounds played at Duke, Leona Maguire has counted 81.5 of those rounds. It marks the fi rst time in school history that Duke has been sent this far west for a NCAA regional. Two of the all-time winningest Division I head coaches will be in Albuquerque for the regionals as Dan Brooks (1st, 128 wins) and John Crooks of Campbell (T-3rd, 81 wins). Crooks is 10 behind Mark Gale for second and is tied with Dale McNamara from Tulsa with 81. Duke s nine NCAA Regional titles are the most by a school -- 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2014. The Blue Devils are listed seventh in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. In the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, Leona Maguire is listed No. 1, while Gurbani Singh (58), Virginia Elena Carta (64), Sandy Choi (68) and Ana Belac (73) are ranked. Head coach Dan Brooks has collected at least one team victory in 32 of his 33 years at Duke, including three in 2016-17. DUKE HEADS BACK TO ALBUQUERQUE The Blue Devils will head back to Albuquerque, N.M., for the fi rst time since the 2008 NCAA Championship where Duke placed third overall. Duke turned in rounds of 299, 300, 300 and 281 to fi nish with an 1,180 ledger. Amanda Blumenherst placed tied fi fth and Jennie Lee tied 15th. In 1987, Duke also played in Albuquerque in the NCAA Championship and placed tied seventh. Both tournaments the Blue Devils were coached by Dan Brooks. LEONA MAGUIRE HAVING STELLAR SEASON Duke junior Leona Maguire is having one of the best seasons in Duke and NCAA history totaling a 69.68 stroke average. The stroke average is the lowest in ACC history and one of the lowest averages in NCAA history. She is currently No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and the Golfweek Individual rankings. Maguire has also registered three victories and eight top 10 fi nishes in eight tournaments. IN THE DUKE RECORD BOOK In the Duke season record book, Leona Maguire currently ranks No. 1 in stroke average (69.68), tied 10th in even or under par rounds (17), tied eighth in wins (3) and tied 10th in top fi ve fi nishes (7). In the Duke career record books, Maguire has moved into tied third in wins (7), tied sixth in top fi ve fi nishes (18), tied sixth in top 10 fi nishes (24), third in even or under par rounds (58), fi fth in tournaments as Duke s top scorer (20), fi rst in career scoring average (71.00), third in rounds in the 60s (22) and tied fourth in eagles (7). Rookie Ana Belac is tied eighth on the Duke freshman record charts with a 73.36 stroke average. Senior Sandy Choi is tied sixth on the Blue Devil career charts with six eagles. IMPRESSIVE SPRING In fi ve stroke play tournaments this spring, the Blue Devils have fi nished no lower than third, while taking home two wins. Over the last four tournaments, Duke has placed either fi rst or second. Since deciding to stay in school and not turn professional, Leona Maguire has played in fi ve tournaments and totaled a 69.86 stroke average. In those tournaments, she has fi nished fi rst three times to go along with a second place and a tied sixth fi nish. Maguire has six rounds in the 60s out of 15. CHOI IN REGIONAL PLAY Senior Sandy Choi will head to her fourth NCAA regional and will be looking for her fourth straight top 15 fi nish. As a freshman, Choi placed tied seventh with rounds of 72, 68 and 72 for a four-under, 212; as a sophomore tied for 14th with rounds of 73, 73 and 74 for a four-over, 220; and as a junior she tied four fourth with rounds of 73, 69 and 71 for a three-under-par, 213. In three regionals, she owns a stroke average of 71.67. If Choi would fi nish in the top 10, she would become just the sixth Blue Devil to turn in three top 10 fi nishes in NCAA regional play. With a top 15 placement, Choi would be just the fourth Blue Devil to collect four top 15 fi nishes in the regionals. ACC CHAMPIONS For the 20th time in school history, Duke won an ACC Championship as the Blue Devils turned in a fi ve-under-par 54-hole ledger of 859 to win by nine strokes at the 6,192-yard, par 72 The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. Duke junior Leona Maguire claimed individual medalist honors for the second time over the last three years as she carded a six-under-par, 210, to win by two strokes. As a team, Duke registered rounds of 284, 286 and 289 over three days for an 859 ledger, which was nine strokes better than Florida State (868). The Blue Devils won the ACC Championship for the 19th time under head coach Dan Brooks and the 20th time overall. It also marked the 16th time Duke has swept both the team and individual titles. The championship is the fi rst for the Blue Devils since the 2014 campaign and the second for lone senior Sandy Choi. Duke featured a nine-stroke advantage heading into the fi nal round, but the Blue Devils struggled during holes four through nine on the front nine to drop back into a tie for fi rst at one-over-par with Florida State. The Blue Devils responded in a big way with collecting 11 back nine birdies on their way to closing out the victory. All fi ve Blue Devils fi nished in the top 17 of the individual listing Choi (T4), Ana Belac (T14), Virginia Elena Carta (T17) and Gurbani Singh (T17). Maguire, a product of Cavan, Ireland, entered the fi nal round tied for the individual lead, but shot a two-under-par, 70, Saturday to win by two strokes over Wake Forest s Jennifer Kupcho (212). The win for Maguire was her third victory of the season and seventh of her career, which ranks tied for third-most in school history. She joins only Amanda Blumenherst (3), Brittany Lang (2) and Jenny Chuasiriporn (2) as multiple ACC individual medalists from the Blue Devils. Over the three days, Maguire carded rounds of 68, 72 and 70 for a six-underpar, 210. INTERNATIONAL ROSTER Duke features a very international fl are to its 2016-17 roster with one golfer from Slovenia (Ana Belac), South Korea (Sandy Choi), Italy (Virginia Elena Carta) and India (Gurbani Singh), while two from Ireland (Lisa & Leona Maguire).
