The B G News Tuesday Bowlng Green State Unversty October 13, 1981 Search kept closed by Davd Sgworth News staff reporter The Presdental Search and Screenng Commttee and the Student Government Assocaton consttuton - two recent sources of controversy at the Unversty - were among the agenda tems at the Board of Trustees meetng Frday mornng. n antcpaton of a statement of dsappontment by Faculty Senate Charman Rchard Ward, Board Presdent Frazer Reams explaned the commttee's reasonng tor the confdentalty of the search. "There s no queston that publcty would serously curtal applcatons and nomnatons," Reams, the search commttee charman and spokesman, sad. Publcaton of names would make problems for applcants, he explaned, because most of them currently hold mportant postons. 'WE ARE AWARE of the great nterest n the progress of the commttee," Reams sadt "and we welcome the nput of those nterested." He sad the commttee s followng "good plannng, we're gettng good results and we nave a tmetable that s realstc." Ward later presented the board wth a resoluton drafted by Faculty Senate last week expressng "keen dsappontment" wth the confdentalty of the search and recommendng that the commttee adjust ts polces n that regard. But Ward thanked Reams for explanng the reasonng behnd the confdentalty, somethng he sad the faculty prevously was unsure of. WARD'S REACTON was re- All 4 alleged kllers alve strcted, though, because of hs seat on the search commttee, Dr. Ronald Stoner, char-elect of Faculty Senate, sad yesterday. Reams' explanaton dd not answer all of the questons rased about the confdentalty, Stoner sad, but, he added, "At least t's good to hear the offcal reason for the secrecy." Stoner and Ward sad presentaton of the resoluton was the only acton Faculty Senate can make regardng the confdentalty. Stoner explaned that the commttee can now take the faculty's dsappontment nto consderaton. ALSO LEFT for consderaton at the meetng was the newly drafted SGA consttuton. n one of the fner presentatons ever before the board, accordng to Trustee Wllam Spengler, Student Body Presdent Dana Kortokrax and Bruce Johnson, academc affars coordnator for the consttutonal steerng commtee, ave the board a look at the new ocument. The board wll act on the consttuton at ts November meetng. "The response we got ndcates that (the board) realzes a change of some sort s necessary and welcome," Kortokrax sad yesterday. But Ward presented the board wth a second Faculty Senate resoluton, recommendng aganst "ncludng automatc rghts to membershp on commttees n any of student rghts at Bowlng Green State Unversty." KORTOKRAX ADMTTED that the controversal clause that would gve students votng rghts on decsonmakng commttees may cause problems. But she sad the clause wll not kll the whole document because the board could approve all but the clause, leavng t to be compromsed. Egypt purges 18 Moslem offcers CARO, Egypt (AP) - The El fovernment. n a new crackdown on he Moslem fundamentalst movement blamed for Anwar Sadat's assassnaton, announced Monday t had purged 18 offcers from the army because of ther "fanatc relgous tendences." The acton was reported on the eve of a natonal referendum that s all but certan to endorse Hosn Mubarak as successor to Presdent Sadat, whose chef assassn was alleged to be a Moslem fanatc army leutenant. Egypt's defense mnster, meanwhle, reported that all four alleged kllers survved - contrary to prevous government statements that one was slan - and that the accused rngleader had awakened from a coma and told "the whole story." THE MNSTER, Lt. Gen. Abdel Halm Abu Ghazala, sad that t took securty forces fve hours to track down one of the alleged assassns after last Tuesday's bloodbath at a suburban Caro parade ground. A report n Mayo, the weekly newspaper of the rulng Natonal Democratc Party Party, sad U.S. offcals have assured the Egyptan leadershp that the delvery of fghter planes, tanks and mssles to Caro wll be accelerated. The Sovet Unon stepped up ts crtcsm of U.S. "nterference" n Egyptan affars, sayng plans for new U.S. Egyptan mltary maneuvers represented a "perlous polcy" and Washngton had arranged the maneuvers out of "selfsh, hegemonstc aspratons." SADAT'S ASSASSNATON, allegedly at the hands of relgous extremsts wth mltary connectons, has strred new uncertantes n Egypt at a tme of growng unrest among Moslem fundamentalsts. The fundamentalsts opposed Sadat's pro-western polces and hs peace wth srael, polces now embraced by Mubarak. Mubarak, vce presdent and Sadat's hand-pcked successor, s expected to wn overwhelmng endorsement as the new presdent from 12 mllon Egyptan voters n a referendum today. He s the only canddate, and the voters wll be markng ether "yes" or "no" next to hs pcture. stall photo by Al Fuchs Bruce Johnson, academc affars coordnator of the Student Consttuton Steerng Commttee, presents the newly-drafted SGA consttuton to the Board ol Trustees Frday wth Student Body Presdent Dana Kortokrax. The leader of Egypt )s Sovetorented Progressve unonst Party, whch has no parlamentary seats, urged hs followers to vote aganst Mubarak. But the leader of the Socalst-Labor Party, wth 12 seats, supported Mubarak, sayng he was ready to "gve hm a chance" to change Sadat's polces. THE OFFCAL NEWS AGENCY sad the results would be announced tomorrow. Offcal sources, who would not be publcly dentfed, ssued a statement yesterday sayng 18 army offcers have been posted nto cvlan postons because of ther fanatc relgous tendences." t was the frst such purge of army ranks. The offcers were presumed to be Moslems, although the statement dd not specfy ther relgon. "No detenton or nvestgaton has been conducted wth any of them, or wth any other offcer except the four assassns that were arrested," the statement sad. The sources dened reports that army offcers other than the alleged plot leader, 1st Lt. Khaled Shawk el-slambouly, had been arrested. Sadat was gunned down by men n unform who broke from a mltary parade he was revewng last Tuesday. The leutenant's brother, Mohamed Ahmed Shawk el-slambouly, was among the 1,536 persons arrested n Sadat s crackdown on relgous extremsts and other opponents last month. ABU GHAZALA sad the rngleader gave three regular members of hs artllery group specal leave to make room on the parade truck for hs fellow kllers, dressed the cvlans n unform and used ammunton and grenades bought from crmnals n southern Egypt. The defense mnster also welcomed a stronger Amercan mltary role here, sayng, "The sooner the better, the later the worse." Another report n Mayo sad U.S. Defense Secretary Caspar Wenberger had promsed Abu Ghazala to accelerate the delvery of more M-60 tanks, of whch Egypt already has 244, ground-to-ar mssles and 40 earler ordered F-16 fghter jets. New Graduate Student Senate Consttuton Representaton changes, authorty ncreases by Scott Sleek News staff reporter A new Graduate Student Senate consttuton created to ft current procedures and to make them more workable was passed by the Board of Trustees on Frday. "We really dd not antcpate the Board of Trustees to pass t so quckly," Jon Rce, presdent of GSS, sad. A major change n the consttuton made representatves of organzatons representnggraduate students offcal senators. These persons were formerly ex-offco members. T ALSO GVES GSS authorty over the Professonal Development Fund, whch provdes funds to graduate Weather Mostly sunny. Hgh md 60s, low md 40s. Zero percent chance of ran. nsde students who are dong research for publcatons. The treasurer of GSS wll be the charman of that commttee. Rce sad the consttuton gves the Senate Executve Commttee, more power to oversee offcers n thendutes. t also requres advce and consent from the SEC for all presdental appontments. Another change was the appontment of the vce presdent as charman of the Welfare Commttee, whch makes recommendatons n areas such as stpends and assstantshps. THE CONSTrrunON made the PDF, Welfare and Fnance Commttees permanent nstead of ad hoc, and by-laws were dropped. Rce sad the by-laws n the past Duet's mnstry strs pure mnds Page 3 consttuton were not "really mplemented," and he added that n the new document there are provsons for what the by-laws dd. n makng the GSS more workable, the number of senators was dropped from 100 to 56, provdng one nstead of two senators from each department or nterdepartmental program, plus the addton of one senator from each organzaton representng graduate students. A total of 56 wll be reached by addng an extra senator from each of the larger departments. RCE SAD a smaller GSS would make t easer to fnd a tme for persons to meet, would make t easer to make decsons, and would make each senator more mportant by makng hm "more actve, more nvolved, and more responsble." The consttuton also spelled out the procedure for removal of senators, who can now only be removed from ther department. Formerly they could be removed by the senate. Electons for representatves, who were formerly called drectors, were changed to the fall quarter to allow ncomng students a chance to run for these postons. Last sprng under the old consttuton, two representatves were elected for ths year. One drector dropped out and an electon wll be held sometme ths quarter for the remanng representatve poston. Rce sad. t also rased the quorum from 10 to 13 n order that no meetng could be held wth offcers outnumberng remanng senators. 2 Tte K Nm OcMtor 13. 1M1 Op mon Sounds of s What's gong on?.hush seems to be the word these days. Frst there was the surprsng announcement last summer that the Unversty was swtchng to a semester calendar. Faculty and students had no voce n the decson and many were left wth ther mouths hangng open because Academc Councl last sprng voted down the dea. And now there's the Presdental Search and Screenng Commttee. Fve faculty members, four students and two alumn st on the commttee that s lookng for the Unversty's next presdent. Last week, n a statement of "dsappontment" concernng the confdentalty the commttee s upholdng, Faculty Senate recommended to the Board of Trustees "that the commttee adjust ts polces to allow the dssemnaton of nformaton whch would not dscourage the contnued canddacy of qualfed applcants." n other words, Faculty Senate wanted to know what was gong on. But strangely enough. Faculty Senate seems to accept the answer mat Board Presdent Frazer Reams gave for the confdentalty. He sad "there s no queston that publcty would serously curtal applcatons and nomnatons." We agree wth hm that leakng names of possble canddates would cause problems. But an even bgger queston we have n our mnds s why won't the corrmftee even announce the qualfcatons they are lookng for n a presdent? What makes a good presdent? What do they want n a presdent? Faculty Senate Char-elect Rchard Ward kndly thanked the board for the reason, whch we don't beleve answered all the questons. Maybe he should have let someone else speak n hs. place snce he s a member of the screenng commttee. Consderng that Faculty Senate went to the trouble of passng a resoluton n the frst place, we would thnk that they would do more than just present t to the Board of Trustees and then courteously thank the board for not answerng the real queston. Cuttng the safety net.. The budget cutters were workng late nto the nght n the OMB offce. Focus As they sat around the table, weary from lack of sleep, one of them sad: "That's t, Dave, we can't fnd one more thng to cut." " can't tell that to the boss. There must be somethng else we've overlooked." ' " have an dea, Dave, thought hate to suggest t." "Go ahead. t won't leave ths room." "What about the safety net?" "'m not followng you." "f we took away the safety net we could save 10 more bllon dollars." "But the presdent promsed he'd provde a safety net for the truly needy. f he took t away he'd look as f he were renegng on hs word." "We don't have to tell anyone we've removed the safety net. t wll be our drty lttle secret. But f there s'no safety net and someone walkng on the tghtrope falls, he or she wll ht the pavement wth a thud." "t's done n crcuses all the tme. 've never seen anyone fall off." "Yeh, but n a crcus the people walkng the tghtrope are all n condton. The ones we re provdng the safety net for are old and sck and have no shoes." "Look, Dave, when the presdent talked about a safety net for the elderly, the really poor and the really sck, he was talkng about one of reasonable sze. "f we go nto the recesson before our supply sde economcs bear frut, we're gong to need a bgger safety net than the cty of DetrotTAnd even f the poor people fall nto t, there s no guarantee that they're stll not Vol.62 by Art Buchwald Syndcated Columnst gong to be badlv hurt. "He's rght, Dave. Also, you have to remember, n our last cute we made the tghrope a lot thnner and weaker to save monev. " promsed the boss the safety net would be the last thng we'd cut. Don't forget, we're not only talkng about people walkng on a tghtrope - we're also talkng about those who are gong to start jumpng out of wndows. "You're all heart, Dave. But f the presdent goes on televson and explans to the Amercan people that hs country can't afford a safety net untl t gets ts economc house n order, they'll go along wth hm. "Where does t say n the Consttutuon, Dave, that the presdent of the Unted States has to provde a safety net for people who can't hack t on ther own n ths country?" "'m stll not sure can sell t to the boss." "Put n personal terms, he was poor and no one ever put a safety net under hm." " need more. ammunton than that." "Okay, here's a memo drew up showng every budget cut we've made. The only choce the presdent now has s ether to cancel the safety net, or hold off on buldng the B-l bomber." The other two comments, ncludng one wrtten by Steve Pehler, were gven the lesser status of "Letters to the Edtor." To my untraned eye, and n fact, to my more objectve ruler, t appeared that the "antedtoral" letter wrtten by Steve was as long or slghtly longer than the "pro-eatoral column wrtten by Clnt. had always thought that length was the only sgnfcant crteron that separated a Letter to the Edtor from a Guest Column. Fndng my way around the campus, tryng to fgure what tmes the cafetera s open and tryng to cash a check are just a few examples. The one thng that confuses me the most s the student dentfcaton system. The admnstraton sad they were dong away wth the old system of havng an dentfcaton card and a valdaton card. These two cards were to be replaced by cne card ssued quarterly. Snce they were ssued every quarter, the cards would not have the student's pcture on t. The one card was supposed to be more convenent than the old two-card system. So far, wasn't too confused, but then tred to get nto the Student Recreaton Center. The guy at the front door told me my D card was not enough, had to have a pcture D (a drvers lcense). Well snce couldn't So to the rec center, decded to go to le Lbrary and check out a book. got the same story there, "No pcture D, no books". Any fault for the absence of an elevator rests not wth UAO, but wth the departments responsble for fundng that nstallaton, and the people who fal to realze the need for an elevator n Unversty Hall. Each quarter the student receves, not a card, but a stcker whch contans all other necessary data and can be affxed to the back of the permanent card. The edtors of the News express the belef that "Faculty Senate seems to thnk that t s a prvlege for students to st on commttees" whle the News beleves "t s a rght." What's a rght? And what's a prvlege? What should be students' rghts and prvleges? These are legtmate and real questons. Unfortunately, the resoluton passed Tuesday never addressed these problems. As student representaton on the Senate tself s defned by the academc Charter, personally would have to conclude that, under a legally bndng document approved by the Unversty's Board of Trustees, t was a student rght. Of course, t should be remembered that "what the Board gveth, the Board also may taketh away." But under current polces, the presence of student representatves on numerous governance bodes and commttees s defned and protected. All that s needed s for the Student Government Organzaton to name the representatves to those bodes. ( wonder why SGA has faled to make such appontments to date?) f the Senate's resoluton dd not seek to remove student representatves from Unversty commttees, and f t dd not dscuss what s a rght and what s a prvlege, what dd the resoluton n fact do? The Senate took a poston opposed to four lnes of the froposed Student Body Consttuton, nes whch the Senate beleves make "a categorcal asserton of student rghts to representaton on all polcy makng commttees and groups'' whch drectly affect the welfare of the undergraduate student body. n other words, the Senate opposed a blanket and sweepng expanson of student representaton. One can legtmately dsagree wth ths ex- Eressed opnon of the Faculty Senate, lt let us remember that we are dscussng new and addtonal forms of representaton, ones whch go far beyond what s now the practce at Bowlng Green State Unversty. We are not talkng about rghts or prvleges, nor even about removng students from bodes where they now st.. The Senate's resoluton save as reasons for ts opposton the Senate's belef that the language of the proposed statement of student rghts s n mplct conflct 1) "wth exstng provsons of the Academc Charter." 2) "wth generally recognzed prncples and tradtons of unversty governance," and 3) "wth prncples of due process n matters relatng to tenure and faculty welfare." The resoluton mght have but dd not add the observaton that the faculty possesses nether the rght nor the prvlege to representaton on all decson and polcy makng bodes whch drectly affect the welfare of the faculty. f The BG News' edtoral staff beleves that students should have the addtonal rght or prvlege of partcpatng n tenure decsons, on salary and promoton revew bodes, and on whatever addtonal body t beleves drectly affects student welfare, can understand and respect that vew even whle dsagree wth t. Let those who agree wth the edtoral staff propose such an amendment to the Academc Charter. Then let us have a free and full dscusson of the mplcatons of such a change, and let The BG News, whle fully expressng ts own edtoral vews, accurately and fully report dscussons of the proposal. Above all, please do not crtcze the poor Faculty Senate for actons whch t never took. The Senate's burden of defendng and explanng those actons whch t does take s more than suffcent. f you would lke to comment on somethng n the News or anythng of nterest to the campus or communty, wrte to the News. Anne sang n the group but dropped out when she became pregnant. After Steve realzed that ther marrage was headng nto a "hgh rsk area" because he was gone so much, he also dropped out. They say ther goal s to "str up pure mnds," by httng on subjects most people relate to. When they frst started sngng together, they dd not have a theme to ther concerts. But as tme passed, they sad God showed them what he wanted them to sng about. Ther audences drectly relate to ther songs because the songs deal wth everyday stuatons, he sad, and talk about actual experences people have faced. Because of the openness of ther songs, he sad many people feel comfortable talkng wth the couple after the concerts. "PEOPLE TELL US the ntmate secrets of ther lves and we don't even know them... Sometmes t's real hard to stand up there and sng when you see someone n the audence hurtng and cryng/' Anne sad. N CONCERT, Steve and Anne openly dscuss ther past experences and often te them n wth ther songs, most of whch they have wrtten. "The chldren are the broken peces when a home falls apart. The chldren are the broken peces, who's gong to mend ther tender hearts?... God, come and mend the broken peces.". Steve and Anne both agree that ther prmary goal s to preach the word of God. Tfct K. Nc» OcloWr 13. W1 9 New sexual harassment polcy provdes protecton by Mare Csterno News staff reporter A new Unversty sexual harassment polcy that wll protect students, faculty, contract and classfed staff from sexual dscrmnaton was approved at Frday's Board of Trustee s meetng. Drafted last year by the Offce of Equal Opportunty Complance at the request of Dr. Mchael Ferrar, nterm presdent, the polcy was unanmously approved and supported sprng quarter by the Faculty Senate. Other unverstes whch have effectve polces, such as Oho State Unversty, were nfluental n the decson to create a polcy. FERRAR SAD t s mportant for the Unversty to have a polcy on sexual harassment to provde ndvduals wth an opportunty for grevances. He beleves the document s not only needed, but wll be a help to faculty, students and staff. " thnk t's a very good statement. t gves protecton to a person who wants to brng a complant or to a person who fnds themself subject to a complant," he sad. "The campus s very concerned about respectng the rghts of others. am very pleased about the polcy." THE POLCY DEFNES sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physcal contact of a sexual nature, when submsson to such conduct affects an ndvdual's employment or educatonal pursuts. t wll be the responsblty of the dean, drector, department charman and the admnstratve head of an operatonal unt to coordnate and mplement the polcy wthn hs or her area of responsblty. They are also responsble for referrng reported ncdents of sexual harassment to the EOC. On a Unversty-wde bass, the EOC wll coordnate and mplement the new polcy and serve as the resource center tor all questons dealng wth sexual harassment. ACCORDNG TO THE POLCY, each person covered s expected to adhere to ts standards wth a responsble atttude. t s the responsblty of all members of the Unversty communty to dscourage sexual harassment, report such ncdents and lerate n any nvestgaton that ht result. ror to the approval of the new polcy, students were covered by the student code's hazng polcy n ncdents of sexual harassment. Because the polcy s geared to nclude student needs, the same complant procedures that a faculty or staff member would use should be followed. The procedure for a complant provdes that any ndvdual who beleves he or she has been sexually harassed should contact the EOC. Offce staff members wll dscuss the matter wth the complantant to determne f there s bass for an nvestgaton. THE POLCY STATES that f an nvestgaton s necessary, t wll be conducted by the EOC as farly and quckly as possble wth confdental-. ty and respect for all ndvduals nvolved. The complant wll be resolved n a matter consstent wth the polcy and far to all partes concerned, t says. Before the offce can begn ts nvestgaton, the allegatons must be submtted, n wrtng, to the drector of EOC. Untl ths occurs, the matter wll not be dscussed wth anyone other than the complantant. AN NVESTGATON wll be conducted by a staff person n the EOC only f the complantant has fled a formal, wrtten complant. The role of the EOC n processng the complant ncludes consultaton wth the complantant, dscusson wth persons who may have been wtness to a complantant's stuaton and can assst n establshng the facts and preparng a complete nvestgatve report of the complantant. The report wll be submtted, n wrtng, to the provost for approprate admnstratve acton. A copy wll also be sent to the complantant and the respondent. f the complantant s not satsfed wth the acton taken by the provost, he or she may appeal, n wrtng, to the Unversty presdent wthn seven calendar days of notfcaton of the provost's decson. TW BC Nm October 13, N Hess stresses mportance of Arts-Scence College by Scott Sleek Newt staff reporter Dr. Gary Hess' man nterest s dong all that he can to emphasze the mportance of the Arts and Scences. But as actng dean of the College of Arts and Scences, he has many more concerns as well.' Hess was apponted as the actng dean of the College of Arts and Scences after Dr. Mchael Ferrar became nterm presdent. Hess sad there are both mmedate and long-term values n Arts and Scences programs. He sad there are programs persons can go nto mmedately, as well as programs that can lead them to graduate school, law school or medcal school. ARTS AND SCENCES s a "tradtonal tranng ground" for pre-med, pre-law as well as an advanced tranng n other felds, he sad. The department s tryng to nform students on long term benefts n Arts and Scences, he sad "t seems as though many persons who advance very quckly n busness THE JEWELRY BOX s Buyng 60LD SLVER TUES.-FR.10-5 HOW OPEN SATURDAY'S 12 to 6 133W.WOOSTERST. and government are those wth an Arts and Scences background," he sad. "There have been many studes whch have helped to llustrate ths pont." He sad they try to encourage students to thnk about where they want to be n later years as well as sklls "that may facltate job advancement." "WE ARE ALSO dong all that we can to work wth the Admnstraton offce as well as academc departments n recrutng students nto programs n Arts and Scences," Hess sad. The converson to the semester system wll requre a large amount of tune and work, Hess sad. He sad the converson wll be completed by January, "but that's takng an enormous amount of tme, at present." He sad a second objectve, one that s mposed on hm, s the necessty to Srepare a report for the Unversty to le North Central Assocaton, an accredtng agency that revews Un- versty programs and decdes whether the Unversty should be accredted. "BEYOND THESE PROJECTS, we are also contnung a revew of the currculum as part of the Unversty's development of an educatonal program, he sad. "The College of Arts and Scences wll play a major role n the educatonal program that s beng establshed." He sad ths process has been gong on for a year and wll be contnung.' Hess sad the college s workng more wth the Unversty Placement Offce on job placement for students majorng n an area n Arts and Scences. He sad he also s workng n part to support faculty nstructonal nterest. ANOTHER "very mportant functon of a dean" s dealng wth personnel questons, he sad, and he added ths nvolves ntervewng canddates DELTA GAMMA Welcomes New ntates JmKutfc khsystun for postons n the College. "You spend a good deal of tme revewng credentals of people who are askng for tenure and promoton," he sad. The fnancal stuaton of the Unversty makes the poston "dffcult and challengng," he sad. He sad the department has been asked to reduce costs, and t s up to hm to make those decsons as to what wll be cut. "Wthn the college t would ultmately be my decson although would get a great deal of advce from the staff and possbly department chars as well," he sad. But athletc offcals beleve ther nvestment was worthwhle. Some 21,- 000 fans watched the Golden Flashes beat Northern llnos Unversty 35-10 on Saturday. That was the bggest crowd at a homecomng game n seven years and nearly three tmes last year's attendance of 7,134. "What we needed around here was a lttle pzazz, a lttle exctement," sad Chuck Shultzabarger, the unversty's assstant drector of alumn and development programs. t was Shultzabarger's dea to brng the 32 scantly clad southern belles to Kent to stmulate nterest n a football program that had fallen on hard tmes.' BUT MORE THAN NTEREST n football was stmulated. The swtchboard at the hotel where the cheerleaders stayed was deluged wth calls. Oglers were to be found throughout the weekend. And, the much publczed vst provoked fre from some femnsts. "We are not attackng the ndvdual cheerleaders," Mary Ellen War- den of the Kent Women's Organzaton sad. "But we do object to the mage that contnues to be P'ected about women - you know, women are just sex objects. And, on top of that, we object to havng the unversty condone them beng here." Ms. Warden, however, was not n town for homecomng - she had to go to a weddng n New York. So she mssed a chance to meet wth Suzanne Mtchell, the cheerleaders' vce presdent, who had asked for a showdown. Other KWO mem'uers protested at a 42-float parade Saturday wth sgns lke one that read: "Hearts & Mnds Not Bumps & Grnds." For many years, the Faths ddn't take trps or even leave ther home together to shop or attend famly socal events. That was before the Hamlton County Councl for Retarded Ctzens began ts Respte Care Program. The program makes avalable - for a few hours or for a weekend - people traned to care for the handcapped. "THE MAN PURPOSE s to provde relef for famles who normally take care of handcapped famly members," sad Tern Wanner, the agency's executve drector. "There's a lot of people who, f they ddn't get ths knd of help, would have to put the famly member n a nursng home or nsttuton." N Sports Akron defense hands Falcon kckers frst loss, 2-0 by Tracy Collns News stan reporter Bowlng Green's soccer team got a taste of ts own medcne, and wth t, ts frst taste of defeat, last Saturday, as the Falcons dropped a 2-0 decson to Akron at Mckey Cochrane Feld. The Falcons, who have recorded sx shutouts ths season, had ther offense completely manhandled by the Zps, due to Akron's ncredble strength n the backfeld. BG was lmted to just fve shots on goal, wth only one comng n the second half. BG's strkers, who between them Unversty of Akron back Tony Felpe (8) leaps over an attempted tackle by Bowlng Green's Bart Markel (13), n staff photo by Al Fuch Bowlng Green's Chrs Koehler (96) and Chrs Los (95) cross the fnsh lne hand-n-hand n a te for frst place h last Saturday's cross country meet. BG back on course by Cbuck Krumel News staff reporter The Bowlng Green men's cross country team, runnng ts frst home meet of the season, responded wth ts fnest showng ths year, easly outdstancng Ball State 15-50, to mprove ts mark to 2-5. Junor Chrs Koehler and sophomore Chrs Los ted for frst wth a tme of 31:59 over the 6.1-mle dstance. Sophomore Tm Brennan was second at 32:08 whle Bob Barrett, Jeff Boutelle and senor co-captan Holger Hlle all ted for thrd wth a tme of 32:34. "Ball State dd not have that strong of a team," Brodt sad. "They were behnd us n the conference. We had some runners that really ran well for us today. Barrett has not been up there n a whle and he ran a good race, so dd Boutelle. But we stll need to mprove more before the MAC tournament, though." BRODT SAD the Falcons worked prmarly on runnng as a group durng most of last week n practce. Brodt added that one of the team's major weaknesses throughout the year has been ts nablty to place ts lower runners hgher n the standngs. "t's hard to expect runners to place near the top when everyone s not n the same knd of shape," Brodt sad. "Before ths race, we just wanted to run together and do well as a team. thnk we accomplshed that." Koehler, the team's top runner all season, agreed wth Brodt. "The team ran well even though the competton wasn't all that strong," Koehler sad. "We worked mostly on team work. Hopefully, we'll get stronger as we move closer to the MAC. Rght now, we need to work a lttle more on mprovng ourselves n some areas." Hlle, who has slowed by a cold, ran hs best race ths fall. "Ths race was a bg lft for all of us," Hlle sad. "t was my best race so far. was mpressed by the fact that we shut them out." Koehler sad he felt he could have run faster, but sad he probably wll not reach hs peak untl the MAC champonshps. " feel that 'm mprovng more as season progresses," Koehler sad. had 127 shots and 23 coals n eght games enterng Saturday's contest, got just three shots at the goal, wth only one posng a threat to Akron's freshman goaltender. Glen Sharkey. Bob Theophlus, BG's co-leader n shots enterng the game, was totally shutout n the contest. But the statstcs can be msleadng. The teams were very even throughout most of the contest, and BG's backs, for the most part, were able to handle Akron's forwards. The Zps' backfeld (Smon Spellng, Charle Theuma, Davd Strecker, Savas Tstrds and Steve Nchol) proved to tlt photo by Al Fuch acton from last Saturday's 2-0 Falcon defeat. Lookng on s Zp forward J.B. Amangoua (12). Falcons host Mchgan-Dearborn be the domnant and decdng factor. "OUR STRKERS were a lttle ntmdated," BG coach Gary Palmsano sad. "The Akron backs kept them guessng. They really took our strkers out of the game. Nchol s one of the best sweepers n the country." The Falcons' defense was put to the test by Akron's front lne of Matt Englsh, al-amercan Joe Perera and J.B. Amangoua. Due to sparklng performances by Lenny Connors and goaltender Joe Koury, and a fne effort from Charle Thomas, BG was able to shut the Zps down, except for two mstakes whch Akron turned nto goals. Akron scored at the 18:45 mark of the frst half, when Englsh broke nsde of BG's Mke Mller to take Spellng's comer kck, slammng t passed Koury, who was screened on the play. "We played well n the frst half, but we needed to score to put some pressure on them," Palmsano sad. "We had to play 65 percent of the game under pressure, and that throws a team off ts tmng." That pressured showed wth 4:27 left n the game, when a mental error by Mller gave the Zps an nsurance goal. Defendng on Englsh, Mller ntercepted the hall but nadvertently passed t to Perera, who was all alone n front of the Falcon goal, where he easly beat Koury. "THERE WAS A bg mx-up on that second goal," Koury sad. "Mlls (Mller) made a blnd pass -1 thnk he was tryng to ht Charle (Thomas). came out, and knew that f he (Perera) took one more drbble. had hm. Unfortunately, he ddn't take the second drbble. Besdes the two scorng plays, Akron had an apparent goal called back because of a penalty, and had another shot ht the crossbar. BG's answer on offense conssted manly of a 40 second offensve surge n the frst half, when the Falcons had two very near msses. Akron's defense never agan let BG get that close. " sad before the game that there were two thngs that we needed to do n order to wn, and that was frst, to not let them score on a restart, whch Akron dd; and second, to play flawless soccer, but we made two very bad mstakes," Palmsano sad. "You lust can't make those knd of mstakes aganst an opponent lke Akron. "Akron was bgger, and taller across the board, and t showed. They were the domnate force n the mdfeld. And Matt Englsh was the domnant player (Englsh had 10 of Akron s 17 shots on goal). "t was lke f our football team had to lne up aganst Notre Dame. Both teams are sklled, but there's no way we can match up sze and strengthwse. You have got to gve credt to our team, though, because they worked ther tals off. t s mportant that the players realze ths s not the end of the season, whch s somethng that would have also had to realze U we had won." The Falcons, now 7-1-1, wll have no break after playng Akron, whch was ranked thrd n the regon (to BG's ffth) and second n the state (to BG's thrd) enterng Saturday's contest. BG must now face ndana, whch s ranked frst n the regon and second n the country. The game wll be played tomorrow, at 3:30, at Mckey Cochrane Feld. The NoDaks were the 1980 Natonal champons after beatng Northern Mchgan, of the Central Collegate Hockey Assocaton. Next week, BG travels to defendng natonal champon Wsconsn for a two-game set wth the Badgers. Coach Jerry York, n lookng at tonght's pre-season opponent, sad he expects Mchgan-Dearborn to provde hs untested skaters wth some useful experence before headng nto two weeks of hockey wth the naton's best. "We're all lookng forward to Mchgan-Dearborn," York, now n hs thrd year as Falcon coach, sad. "t's lke a dress rehearsal. We've been anxously lookng forward to North Dakota ths weekend. Mchgan-Dearborn wll be good for us early n season to get some of the wrnkles out, offensvely and defensvely." The exhbton game also provdes York wth some added knowledge of how some of hs younger players (eght cers wll be seeng ther frst acton n a BG unform) wll perform n a Rame-lke stuaton. " thnk t wll help our squad get ready for ths weekend," York sad. "A lot of spots stll are not frmed up at forward and goale. f somebody comes out tomorrow nght, he mght earn a few ponts. "We're lookng for lots of hustle. t's stll early for our team. But f we work very hard, we mght play out some of those wrnkles." York sad he wll play all three of the goales on the team tonght. Junor Mke Davd, sophomore George Smth and freshman Wayne Collns wll each be n goal for the Falcons for one perod. York lsted four pars of defensemen that are lkely to see acton, as well. Bran MacLellan and Dave O'Bran wll match up at the blue lne, as wll Wayne Wlson and Mke Pkul. Garry Galley and Barry Mlls, and Chrs Sanna and Doug Warren. York sad he has soldfed two forward lnes and has hopes of developng two more lnes by ths weekend. The lnes of George McPhee, Bran Hlls, and freshman Dave Randerson and John Samansk, Perry Braun and another freshman, George Roll are set, accordng to York, although Roll s Questonable for tonght's game, as he has a brused heel. Those who are battlng for the other lnes are: Tm Hack, Nck Bandescu, Chrs Guertn, Km Collns, Andre Latretlle, Peter Wlson, and freshmen Dan Kane, Kerry Kennedy and Scott Mader. m notes Entres for cross country, golf and fraternty hockey are due today. Tournament play begns Saturday at 10 a.m. Harrers team up on Eastern, Cedarvlle by Chuck Krumel News staff reporter The Bowlng Green women's cross' country team took a gant step toward the October 24th Md-Amercan Conference Champonshp by defeatng league rval Eastern Mchgan, 21-40, and Cedarvlle 15-50, last Saturday at BG. The Falcons captured sx of the top nne postons wth freshman JoAnn Lancaux and junor Kathy Kaczor fnshng frst and second for BG for the ffth consecutve tme ths season. Lancaux set a new BG course record wth a tme of 18:10.8, breakng the old mark of 18:20.2, set last month by Mchgan's Melane Weaver. EMU's Cheryl Scheffer and Bonne Arnold grabbed the thrd and fourth postons wth tmes of 18:23 and 18:28 respectvely. Head coach Sd Snk, sad he was surprsed by hs team's strong showng and sad the team s stronger now than last year at ths tme. "Everybody just ran super," Snk sad. "t surprsed me. we ran the frst mle ten seconds faster than we had planned. We had 17 runners fnsh the race n under twenty mnutes. Last year we only had eght. That's a tremendous mprovement on our home course." Lancaux's record-breakng run came despte makng a wrong turn shortly after passng the two mle mark of the race. Lancaux was leadng the pack, wth Kaczor followng close behnd, when she became confused and made the faulty turn. Snk sad Lancaux may have run 90 yards before rghtng herself. " got confused about the layout of the course and turned too soon," Lancaux sad. "t was a good thng Kathy was behnd me or mght have went a lttle further before realzng my mstake." The race marked a BG frst of sorts, as both the women's and Falcons' men's team started ther meets smultanously from the startng lne. "t felt strange startng at the same tme wth the guys," Kaczor sad. "They started out so fast, t seemed they were way ahead of us by the tme we got gong." Snk sad perhaps the smultaneous start helped hs team run the frst mle a lttle faster than expected. Other Falcon runners that placed near the top were; junor Terr Gndlesberger, 5th, wth a tme of 18:31; Gdget Wcham (6th, 18:36); Rosale Cocta (7th, 18:37); Sandra Cook (8th, 18:57); and Bev Lynch (9th. 19:06). The BC Newt OcMktr 11. M Draw: Falcon defense saves face aganst Redskn attack by Chrs Sberk sports edtor f, ndeed, Bowlng Green felded an offense n ts 7-7 sleeper wth Mam last Saturday, each of those 11 players deserves an Oscar for a collectve mpersonaton of the nvsble Man. Fortunately for the stll-wnless Falcons, they dd stage a respectable defensve performance to salvage a Md-Amercan Conference te and avod a nnth straght defeat at the hands of the Redskns. For some of the 14,768 on hand, the tght, defensve struggle was not enough to keep them n ther seats, as many headed for the exts before the start of the fourth quarter, wth BG down 7-0. PERHAPS T WAS the 90 yards total offense, a mere 17 on the ground, that the Falcons had to show for three quarters of the football game that compelled the fans to depart. Or perhaps t was the ease wth whch Mam ran up and down the feld all afternoon (amassng 244 yards rushng). Nevertheless, the Falcons were down by just a touchdown wth S mnutes to play. So when Mam's Greg Jones coughed up hs second fumble on hs own 43-yardlne and the Falcons converted the mscue nto a score, the stage was set for the fnal act. Wth the ball restng on the Redskn 43 followng the Jones' fumble, BG roused ts dormant offense. Bryant "Cowboy" Jones toted the ball four tmes n the scorng drve, Sckng up two frst downs n the process. -reg Taylor, quarterback turned flanker, legged out 14 yards on a reverse and freshman tght end Mark Dowdell snagged a Dayne Palsgrove pass for sx yards and two more frst downs. The drve was capped when Palsgrove bootlegged rght and found a wde-open Dowdell n the endzone. t was the frst BG touchdown aganst Mam snce 1978. WHEN BG HEAD COACH Denny Stolz decded aganst a go-ahead, two-pont converson wth 5:57 remanng, Gehad Youseff golfed hs kck through the uprghts to te t at "You gotta have two tght ends to go for two BG crowd frustrated as Falcons, Redskns play to 7-7...(yawn)...deadlock Perhaps Bowlng Green should be happy to have forged a te wth Mam last Saturday. After all, the Falcons dd not deserve to wn, and for the frst tme n nne years, BG dd not lose to the Redskns. But, college football, even at ths Unversty, does not work that way. No one goes home satsfed after a te and t s especally dsgustng when the two teams seemngly play for a te towards the end of a game that was not very exctng to begn wth. Frst, BG stunned ts fans by not gong for a two-pont converson after scorugwth 5:57 remanng n the game. BG head coach Denny Stolz sad afterwards that the Falcons couldn't go for two wth just one tght end n the game. NJURES HAVE deleted BG's recevng corps ths season and tght end has been one of the hardest ht areas. But Stolz' memory must have been falng hm, because earler ths season at Oho Unversty, BG not only went for, but successfully completed a two-pont converson wth just one tght end. Stolz also sad that, wth nearly sx mnutes left n the contest, he felt BG's defense could hold the Redskns, and the Falcons would have tme to drve for another score. At least somebody stll has confdence n the hghly mpotent BG offense. After watchng the Redskns C'l the Falcons all over the feld and t them to a measley 141 total yards, most fans regarded the touchdown wth 5:57 left as some sort of sgn from the heavens. Gehad Youseff's extra pont kck cleared the uprghts by all of a couple nches to te the game and led Stolz to admt later that that's not money n the bank at all" when Youseff launches a PAT kck. FOR THE FALCONS to wn the contest n the fnal sx mnutes, they almost certanly would have had to Enetrate very deep nto Mam rrtory. Stolz even admtted after the game that BG would have had to tet very close ndeed for Youseff to ck a feld goal nto the ferce Doyt Perry Feld wnd. Sports brefs. There wll be an organzatonal meetng for all those nterested n women's ndoor and outdoor track tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. n the women's lockerroom on the west sde of Doyt Perry Feld. The Bowlng Green Roadrunners Sdelne Joe Menzer assstant sports edtor After Stolz' decson to settle for the one-ponter, MU head coach Tom Reed further confused the fans by runnng the football and then puntng t away n the fnal seconds. t seemed as f the two coaches thought that the Md-Amercan Conference was gvng out a specal bonus last weekend for teams that ted. "We Just were not executng," Reed sad. "f you want to play percentage football, the percentages n that stuaton dctate that we have Jones run the football." Even though Jones was Mam's most effectve.qffensve weapon,. runnng for 186 yards on a recordtyng 45 carres, t s almost too much to ask of any back to take a team from ts own 26-yard lne nto feld goal range n a matter of 1:33. THEN, WHEN fourth down-andfour came up, and Stolz fully expected the Redskns to fake a punt, the fans watched dsbelevngly as both teams let nearly 20 seconds tck off the clock. No one called tmeout, and Stolz later revealed that he was unsure how many he had left. " don't thnk had ever coached a te here, but 've coached qute a few one-ponters" Stolz sad afterwards, referrng to all the close games BG has lost n the last two years. Stolz' track record ndcates that he does not play for tes. Wth the game on the lne earler ths season at OU, the Falcons dd not hestate to go for two. Two seasons ago, n a smlar stuaton aganst Kentucky, BG made the same decson. Perhaps Stolz had nghtmare vsons Saturday of another heartbreakng one-pont loss. But the home fans Stolz ana the Falcons so much wanted to please desperately wanted a shot at somethng they haven't experenced n seven games spannng two seasons - a clear-cut vctory. wll be sponsorng a organzatonal meetng tor all nterested runners Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Wntergarden Lodge. Sd Snk, coach of the women's cross country team at the Unversty wll speak and conduct a runnng clnc. For nformaton, call the Falcon House at 352-3610. Weekend wrap-up. Strckers splt Bowlng Green's feld hockey team splt a doubleheader wth two Md- Amercan Conference opponents last Saturday, fallng to Northern llnos, 3-1, but thrashng Western Mchgan, 3-0. Despte the loss, BG's frst n the conference, the Falcons (4-1) stand ted for frst place n the MAC wth Mam. Oho Unversty, Central Mchgan and Ball State all tral wth 3-1 marks. The stckers travel to Mchgan, today, for a 4 p.m. contest, then wll contnue conference competton ths weekend wth Toledo, Eastern Mchgan and Ball State. An nablty to convert penalty corners nto goals was BG's downfall n ts loss to Northern llnos Saturday mornng. The Falcons were gven 22 penalty shots whch yelded no shots on the NU goal. "They (Northern llnos) just controlled the game." sad BG coach Pat Brett. "We couldn't get any shots off, and that deflated us. The Huskes dd all ther scorng damage n the frst half. Stace Boluman knocked n a goal at 1:45 nto the game. Cndy Potteogen talled what turned out to be the wnnng goal, and Boluman followed up wth another score. Nanc Smth had the Falcons' only goal, connectng late n the second BG then unleashed ts wrath on Western Mchgan that afternoon. Senor Deb Lux led off the scorng bltz sx mnutes nto the game. Smth, asssted by Kathleen Kelly, knocked (ponts)," Stolz sad, referrng to both hs decson on the converson and hs one-deep stuaton at tght end. "We wll have another tght end back next week, Davd Mller (who was njured durng pre-season practce n September.) Mam stll had plenty of tme to score, and appeared close to dong t. untl BG safety Martn Bayless ntercepted an undertnrown John Appold pass to Don Treadwell n the corner of the endzone wth 2:27 left. t was the fourth tme Mam penetrated to wthn the BG 15-yard lne and came away sans score. "Our offense contnued to make a thousand mstakes," Mam head coach Tom Reed sad. "We had tremendous opportuntes. The offense s strctly my responsblty. We have not been on track the way we should have, especally n that game. t was a dsaster at best." Mam's frst drve pushed the ball to the BG 6. But t was halted when offensve nterference was called n the endzone, resultng n an automatc touchback and BG's ball on the 20. REDSKN PLACEKCKER Mke Kebach mssed a 28-yard feld goal attempt nto the wnd, closng down another threat early n the second perod. On ther next possesson, the Redskns drove to the BG 10, only to be stopped n ther moccasns by Jones' frst fumble. "Our defense absolutely sucked t up n the scorng zone," Stolz sad. "They (BG) had three ncredble penaltes (a fumbled punt, when the ball bounced off the back of Tony Graham, pass nterference and roughng the passer). The defense played lke the devl. They (Mam) could have scored seven touchdowns wth that many errors. Mam dd manage to score wth 45 seconds left n the frst half, when Jones capped a 12- play, 54-yard drve wth a one-yard dve up the mddle. Jones equaled the Mam record for total carres n one game. 45, whle ganng 186 yards to pad hs conference-leadng rushng mark of 131 yards per game. Spkers swept Bowlng Green's women's volleyball team dropped all four of ts matches last weekend at the Wndy Cty Classc n Chcago. BG's record falls to 4-12. BG dropped ts frst match, 15-5 and 15-3, to owa, and lost ts second match to Loyola Unversty of Chcago, 15-8 and 15-7. The Falcons threatened each of ther next two opponents before fallng. The Falcons lost to Lews College (14-16,15-12 and 1W) and DePaul (7-15, 15-7 and 15-12). Although the Falcons dropped all of ther games, they showed marked mprovement n ther play over the four games, senor spker Sara Rngle sad. "We started off a lttle slow n the matches, but we played much better as the weekend went along," Rngle sad. "We're playng better as we get to know each other more and as the freshmen get ther experence." A major problem for BG was fallng behnd early n the games, although not because of a lack of ntensty, Rngle sad. "Usually the score of a game s obvous when you are on the court because of the way the players are playng, so you don't need to look at the scoreboard," she sad. "But n our early matches, t would feel (n ntensty) that the game was very close. but would look up to the scoreboard and see that we were down by 10 ponts. "We really played more lke we should n the last two games. thnk the team wll be alrght as soon as we play more together wthout lapses n concentraton." But unable to move the football, the Redskns lned up to punt. Both teams allowed the clock to run as Steve Bumpass' punt was downed at the BG 26. "HeH yes, thought they were gong to fake punt t,'' Stolz sad, justfyng hs decson to allow the clock to run. The A's, managed by ex-yankees' skpper Blly Martn, feature a speedorented attack that s called "Bllyball," a trbute to the plot who has taken the team from sorry also-rans to champonshp contenders. The A's speed game, led by fleet outfelder Rckey Henderson who stole 100 bases last year and 56 n 108 games ths season, s n stark contrast to New York's rock-'em, sock-'em long ball approach, eptomzed by slugger Regge Jackson. t was Jackson's two-run homer that trggered the Yankees' 7-3 AL East Dvson clncher aganst Mlwaukee Sunday nght. The A's swept to the West Dvson crown, elmnatng defendng champon Kansas Cty n three straght games. New York and Oakland earned ther way nto the postseason playoffs by leadng ther dvsons for the frst half of the season. Oakland set a record, wnnng 17 of ts frst 18 games. The A's fnshed the frst half at 37-23 and were 64-45 for the full season. The Yanks were 34-22 for the frst half and 59-48 overall. The Yankees receved some bad news Monday when t was dsclosed that a blster on the rght ndex fnger had knocked Rck Reuschel out of the second game start. "Hs chances of ptchng Wednesday are not very good," sad Clyde Kng, the Yankees' ptchng coach. The Yankees wll open wth lefthander Tommy John Tuesday nght aganst Oakland rght-hander Mke Norrs. Reuschel's njury forced New York Manager Bob Lemon to revse hs ptchng plans after that. Lefthander Rudy May wll work Game Two, followed by rooke Dave Rghett n the thrd game and Ron Gudry n Game Four. "The blster's not too bad," sad Reuschel. " should be ready sometme n ths seres." When he returns to acton, Reuschel probably wll be n the bullpen, a busy place n the Yankees' scheme of thngs. Sunday nght's 7-3 East Dvson clncher aganst Mlwaukee was a perfect example of the club's approach to these games. New York splt the frst seven nnngs of the game between Gudry and Rghett, then turned the lead over to relef ace Rch Gossage. t was Gossage's thrd save of the seres, and t s a pattern that John dxpects to contnue. "On ths club, you get to the seventh nnng and t's ted or you're ahead by a run, you know you're gong to get Goose or (Ron) Davs," he sad. That's not the case wth the A's, where Martn specalzes n complete games for hs ptchng staff. A year ago, the Oakland ptchers completed a record 94 games. BG coach John Pper sad he was pleased wth the overall performance of hs sx-man contngent n the Falcons' frst tourney ths fall. BG plays an abrevated schedule n the fall to qualfy the sx best golfers for the sprng's regular season. The Falcons, who have recorded sx shutouts ths season, had ther offense completely manhandled by the Zps, due to Akron's ncredble strength n the backfeld. BG was lmted to just fve shots on goal, wth only one comng n the second half. BG back on course by Chuck Krumel News staff reporter The Bowlng Green men's cross country team, runnng ts frst home meet of the season, responded wth ts fnest showng ths year, easly outdstancng Ball State 15-50, to mprove ts mark to 2-5. "t's nard to expect runners to place near the top when everyone s not n the same knd of shape," Brodt sad. "Before ths race, we just wanted to run together and do well as a team. thnk we accomplshed that." Koehler, the team's top runner all season, agreed wth Brodt. "The team ran well even though the com- K'tton wasn't all that strong," oehler sad. " feel that 'm mprovng more as season progresses," Koehler sad. had 127 shots and 23 goals n eght games enterng Saturday's contest, got just three shots at the goal, wth only one posng a threat to Akron's freshman goaltender. Glen Sharkey. Bob Theophlus, BG's co-leader n shots enterng the game, was totally shutout n the contest. But the statstcs can be msleadng. The teams were very even throughout most of the contest, and BG's backs, for the most part, were able to handle Akron's forwards. The Zps' backfeld (Smon Spellng, Charle Theuma, Davd Strecker, Savas Tstrds and Steve Nchol) proved to lft photo by AlFuchs acton from last Saturday's 2-0 Falcon defeat. Lookng on s Zp forward J.B. Amangoua (12). Falcons host Mchgan- Dearborn be the domnant and decdng factor. "OUR STRKERS were a lttle ntmdated," BG coach Gary Palmsano sad. "The Akron backs kept them guessng. They really took our strkers out ofthe game. Nchol s one of the best sweepers n the country." The Falcons' defense was put to the test by Akron's front lne of Matt Englsh, all-amercan Joe Perera and J.B. Amangoua. Due to sparklng performances by Lenny Connors and goaltender Joe Koury, and a fne effort from Charle Thomas, BG was able to shut the Zps down, except for two mstakes whch Akron turned nto goals. Akron scored at the 18:45 mark of the frst half, when Englsh broke nsde of BG's Mke Mller to take Spellng's corner kck, slammng t passed Koury, who was screened on the play. Defendng on Englsh, Mller ntercepted the ball but nadvertently passed t to Perera, who was all alone n front of the Falcon goal, where be easly beat Koury. "THERE WAS A bg mx-up on that second goal," Koury sad. "Mlls (Mller) made a blnd pass -1 thnk he was tryng to ht Charle (Thomas). came out, and knew that f he (Perera) took one more drbble, had hm. Unfortunately, he ddn't take the second drbble.' Besdes the two scorng plays. Akron had an apparent goal called back because of a penalty, and had another shot ht the crossbar. "You just can't make those knd of mstakes aganst an opponent lke Akron. "Akron was bgger, and taller across the board, and t showed. They were the domnate force n the mdfeld. And Matt Englsh was the domnant player (Englsh had 10 of Akron's 17 shots on goal). "t was lke f our football team had to lne up aganst Notre Dame. Both teams are sklled, but there's no way we can match up sze and strengthwse. You have got to gve credt to our team, though, because they worked ther tals off. t s mportant that the players realze ths s not the end of the season, whch s somethng that would have also had to realze f we had won." The Falcons, now 7-1-1, wll have no break after playng Akron, whch was ranked thrd n the regon (to BG's ffth) and second n the state (to BG's thrd) enterng Saturday's contest. BG must now face ndana, whch s ranked frst n the regon and second n the country. The game wll be played tomorrow, at 3:30, at Mckey Cochrane Feld. Tkc BG.New (kcker 13, N Draw: Falcon defense saves face aganst Redskn attack by Chrs Sherk sports edtor f, ndeed, Bowlne Green felded an offense n ts 7-7 sleeper wth Mam last Saturday, each of those 11 players deserves an Oscar for a collectve mpersonaton of the nvsble Man. Nevertheless, the Falcons were down by just a touchdown wth 15 mnutes to play. So when Mam's Greg Jones coughed up hs second fumble on hs own 43-yard lne and the Falcons converted the mscue nto a score, the stage was set for the fnal act Wth the ball restng on the Redskn 43 followng the Jones' fumble, BG roused ts dormant offense. Bryant "Cowboy" Jones toted the ball four tmes n the scorng drve, pckng up two frst downs n the process. Greg Taylor, quarterback turned flanker, legged out 14 yards on a reverse and freshman tght end Mark Dowdell snagged a Dayne Palsgrove pass for sx yards and two more frst downs. Frst, BG stunned ts fans by not gong for a two-pont converson after scorng wth 5:57 remanng n the game. BG head coach Denny Stolz sad afterwards that the Falcons couldn't go for two wth just one tght end n the game. NJURES HAVE deleted BG's recevng corps ths season and tght end has been one of the hardest ht areas. But Stolz' memory must have beea falng hm, because earw bs season at Oho Unversty, BG not only went for, but successfully completed a two-pont converson wth just one tght end. Stolz also sad that, wth nearly sx mnutes left n the contest, he felt BG's defense could hold the Redskns, and the Falcons would have tme to drve for another score. At least somebody stll has confdence n the hghly mpotent BG offense. After watchng the Redskns push the Falcons all over the feld and lmt them to a measley 141 total yards, most fans regarded the touchdown wth 5:57 left as some sort of sgn from the heavens. Gehad Youseff's extra pont kck cleared the uprghts by all of a couple nches to te the game and led Stolz to admt later that "that's not money n the bank at all" when Youseff launches a PAT kck. FOR THE FALCONS to wn the contest n the fnal sx mnutes, they almost certanly would have had to penetrate very deep nto Mam terrtory. Stolz even admtted after the game that BG would have had to get very close ndeed for Youseff to kck a feld goal nto the ferce Doyt Perry Feld wnd. Sports brefs. There wll be an organzatonal meetng for all those nterested n women s ndoor and outdoor track tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. n the women's lockerroom on the west sde of Doyt Perry Feld. "We lust were not executng," Reed sad. "f you want to play percentage football, the percentages n that stuaton dctate that we have Jones run the football." Even though Jones was Mam's most effectve.offenslve weapon, runnng for 186 yards on a recordtyng 45 carres, t s almost too much to ask of any back to take a team from ts own 26-yard lne nto feld goal range n a matter of 1:33. " don't thnk had ever coached a te here, but 've coached qute a few one-ponters" Stolz sad afterwards, referrng to al the close games BG has lost n the last two years. But the home fans Stolz and the Falcons so much wanted to please desperately wanted a shot at somethng they haven't experenced n seven games spannng two seasons - a clear-cut vctory. wll be sponsorng a organzatonal meetng tor all nterested runners Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Wntergarden Lodge. "We wll have another tght end back next week, Davd Mller (who was njured durng pre-season practce n September.) Mam stll had plenty of tme to score, and appeared close to dong t. untl BG safety Martn Bayless ntercepted an underthrown John Appold pass to Don Treadwell n the corner of the endzone wth 2:27 left. t was the fourth tme Mam penetrated to wthn the BG 15-yard lne and came away sans score. But t was halted when offensve nterference was called n the endzone, resultng n an automatc touchback and BG's ball on fee 20. Jones equaled the Mam record for total carres n one game, 45, whle ganng 186 yards to pad hs conference-leadng rushng mark of 131 yardsper game. The Falcons lost to Lews College (14-16,15-12 and 15-3) and DePaul (7-15, 15-7 and 15-12). "But n our early matches, t would feel (n ntensty) that the game was very close, but would look up to the scoreboard and see that we were down by 10 ponts. "We really played more lke we should n the last two games. thnk the team wll be alrght as soon as we play more together wthout lapses n concentraton." The Falcons return home to Anderson Arena, tonght at 7:30. to face Md-Amercan Conference toe Eastern Mchgan. We've got to get awfully close to kck a feld goal nto the wnd. FALCON NOTES: n hs frst start at flanker for BG, Taylor caught sx passes for 42 yards and ran twce for fve more. Yanks, A's open seres NEW YORK (AP) - Oakland's young, fred-up A's challenge the tradtonladen New York Yankees wth the Amercan League pennant at stake n a best-of-fve champonshp seres begnnng tonght. Oakland set a record, wnnng 17 of ts frst games. "Hs chances of ptchng Wednesday are not very good." sad Clyde Kng, the Yankees' ptchng coach. The Yankees wll open wth lefthander Tommy John Tuesday nght S'anst Oakland rght-hander Mke orrs. " should be ready sometme n ths seres." When he returns to acton, Reuschel probably wll be n the bullpen, a busy C' n the Yankees' scheme of gs. "On ths club, you get to the seventh nnng and t's ted or you're ahead by a run, you know you re gong to get Goose or (Ron) Davs," he sad. Oho State and South Carolna ted for frst n the 54-hole Buckeye tourney, at 1130, before the Gamecocks won the champonshp by one stroke n a te-breakng round. OSU's Stan Cooke and Greg Ladehoff ted for ndvdual medalst honors at 7-overpar, 223. Jean LaRochelle carded BG's best overall score, a 77-74-76-227, good for a sxth-place te.
