International Concrete Repair Institute www.icricarolinas.org Carolinas Chapter November 2011 President s Message Keith Harrison Capital Restoration and Waterproofing Once again we approach the end of the year. Seems like just a few weeks ago we were ringing in 2011 and in just a couple short months we will be saying Good bye to 2011 and Hello 2012. Reflecting back on the year past it seems that the Carolina s Chapter of ICRI has had an excellent year. We hosted our first Mega Demo in years that was a huge success and changed our fall venue a little for which we received great reviews from attendees. Thanks to Kelly and his crew for all their hard work as well as the 2011 Chapter Board. They have really made a simple guy such as I look very put together. Kudos to you all. You will be led this coming year by Mr. McDougall of Blair Duron Restoration as president and have no doubt that he will do a great job as he did as vice president. His trusty sidekick will be Mr. Molby of SKA which has brought great new ideas to the board and has done a great job with the Education Committee and scholarships. Also with the ending of 2011 we bid fair well to Mr. Hadley of Sika, our Past President, whom has, to this point, made a career as a Board member. Jim brought a lot of excitement to the Chapter and I hope that he enjoys his time off the Board. Tara Cavalline of UNC Charlotte steps up to the Executive Committee as, I believe, the first female executive board member. Go Tara!! A special thanks to all of our sponsors of the past year as we know times are tough and these opportunities are limited. Our Chapter appreciates your support. Well, I leave you now as current president and turn the reins over to Mr. McDougall and the 2012 Chapter Board. Thanks to all our membership for your support throughout the year and hope to see you all in the spring. We had 61 attendees join us in Pinehurst for our first Fall Convention in the Sandhills. The topic was Masonry: Repair vs. Restoration and we had a great line-up of speakers plus we introduced the new ICRI Guideline booklet on Masonry. We wanted to thank our start line-up of presenters for their contributions: Andy Anderson, Anderson Jones, Brian Daley, C.A. Lindman, Art Burkhart, Old Carolina Brick, Wendy Phillips, UNC Architect, Chris Coutu, PE, Atlas Engineering, Brian Barnes, Helifix, Mike Edison, Edison Coatings, Chuck Ernest CHUCK ERNEST: LIFETIME MEMBER Last year when he announced his retirement, Chuck Ernest was honored in Charleston, SC for his contributions to the chapter and the industry as recipient of the Carolina Chapter s first ever Lifetime Member Award. Unfortunately prior commitments did not allow Chuck the opportunity to personally receive the recognition. But past Awards Committee Chairman Jim Hadley was persistent and in Pinehurst, Jim and Chuck crossed paths in person and Jim had the opportunity to personally recognize Chuck in front of the membership and formally present him the award that he so richly deserved. HAYES THOMPSON: MEMBER OF THE YEAR Hayes Thompson, Project Manager of Heard Ratzlaff Construction in Charlotte was the recipient of the 2011 Carolina s Chapter Member of the Year Award. Hayes, a graduate of Wake Forest University, was recognized by President Keith Harrison for his leadership role in helping stage the MegaDemo in Greensboro, his management and improvements to the chapter s Project of the Year competition and his active involvement with the Chapter s Board of Directors and the recruitment of conference speakers.

MASONRY: REPAIR VS. RESTORATION Board members Jeff Molby and Paul Ferrell conduct a quality control check on Hospitality. New Board member Bill Fortuna checks out the bar provided by the Summit Hospitality Group. Robert McDowell and Rick Cates of Seager Waterproofing prep for the technical sessions. New attendees from Statesville Roofing Company: Pat Lauro and Doug Davidson. ICRI Carolinas Chapter veterans Tom Hayes and Chuck Ernest check out the new masonry guidelines. Part of the packed house for the day-long technical sessions at Little River Resort. Helifix s Brian Barnes speaks with SKA s Kent Yarborough and Tom Hayes. Chapter Board member Dan Bueker reviews material with Derek Hodgin of Construction Science & Engineering. Enjoying the proceedings: Louis Boyd, Sarah Thaxton and Chuck Ernest. A wait well worth it: the chow line for the Italian Buffet lunch. Steve Butler of Pro-Tech Constructions shares a laugh with Neogard s Greg Brown. The putting contest as part of the reception prior to dinner was very popular.

TWO 2011 DAYS ICRI Carolinas IN THE Chapter SANDHILLS Spring Conference OF NORTH And Mega CAROLINA Demo Coastal Concrete Repair: Innovative Technologies and Collaborative Solutions New South Supply s Brian McCormick accepts his prize for the putting contest from Golf Co-Chairman John McDougall. Mike Noel of Western Waterproofing takes aim at the target zone during the outside reception. The weather was good enough that we had the dinner of BBQ and fried chicken on the clubhouse porch. Jim Hadley of Sika receives an appreciation plaque from John McDougall for 50 years of continuous membership on the Board. Jim Hadley shares a few stories with Ken Currence of White Cap Construction Supply and Dave Powers of Euclid (didn t he retire?). Jed Daniel chatting with his twin brother, who is a permanent fixture at the Little River Golf Resort. WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS At the annual Membership Business Meeting, Robert McDowell of Seager Waterproofing (right) and Bill Fortuna of The Quikrete Company (left) were elected as new members of the Chapter Board of Directors. Also thanks to outgoing Board member Dan Bueker and Immediate Past President Jim Hadley for their service and best wishes to Tara Cavalline who assumes the Treasurer s position. 2012 CHAPTER MEETING CALENDAR ANNOUNCED Mark your calendars now for our three chapter conferences and two special events for 2012.
